Thanks for all that stuff man ! Those guys were geniuses and they are the reason I play guitar. I’d love so much being able to play all their material, I would start a Tribute to them. 🤘
That main riff from "Suite Sister Mary" was actually something left over from the writing sessions for "Rage For Order", specifically the song "Neue Regel".
One of the best albums of all time. I wore this cassette out several times. Now that I've gotten into music theory the past year I've been revisiting this and loving it all over again. Thanks for sharing this.
Dave...don’t ever feel the need to apologize for your taste in music...you have excellent taste in music, because it’s exactly like mine!!....rock on my brother!!!
The best album ever recorded IMO. It's just genius and pure perfection, from the first note to the last. This video is obviously only about the (very tasty) guitar parts, but we have to give credit to Geoff Tate and how he effortlessly binds it all together with his masterful vocal performances. In his prime he truly was one of the greatest metal singers. Later on he developed some severe douchebag tendencies, but his performances up to and including Promised Land are just mind-blowingly good.
I don't comment often David, but your lessons are incredible. Mindcrime is and always will be a masterpiece. I can't thank you enough to go over all the incredible clean parts on this album, I can't wait to dig in! We're ready 🤘
Brilliant David! Thanks for expanding on those tricky arpeggiated chords. Fav album from that era… You just opened some of that right up for me! Thank-you!
Sister Mary man that was such a haunting sound saw them on this tour flawless performance they were such technical players Chris and Michael nobody could touch them at that time 87 I think it's been some years another home run David 👍👍🤘🤘👏👏
Rage For Order was intense and awesome too. Geoff really put emotion in the singing and killer instrumental ahead of its time. Mindcrime was fantastic straight after..
If anyone is not on the same page as us students and B 🐓 well, too bad. Metal month is awesome and there is more of us than you. Also, my birthday is in October (5th) which makes it even better. Thanks B 🐓!
Definitely one of the all time great guitar duos! Wilton and Degarmo played off each other so well. Chris was (is) a master of tone and Wilton can shred with the best of them. I was really bummed when Chris left the band to pursue another career, but he is still around if you look carefully. He toured with Jerry Cantrell back in 98 and played on Drone, by Alice in Chains on the Rainier Fog album. Anyway, sorry for rambling but I cannot say enough Chris and that original Ryche line up!!! One of my primary influences growing up. Thanks again for another great video!!!
No matter how anybody day went, this video is the pinnacle of it! Operation Mindcrime is one of the most badass albums ever created. DeGarmo was a musical genius. My opinion is he crafted and guided the sonic structure of every song Queensryche ever did while he was with them. Such a shame he left. I'd love to hear him play again. Him and Bratta!
I have been listening to Mindcrime on casette all week, on the drive to work thinking “i should sit down this weekend and work out some of those rad clean parts” Many Thanks!
Killer. You saved me a lot of time!! Ties in with your Al Dimeola lesson with all those string skipped odd chords. Love that you point out timing idiosyncrasies where warranted. Giant 👍!!!
Geoff Tate had mentioned it was going to be made into a movie, several times. However, the last interview he spoke about it. That was back in 2017. I am not sure what became of it.
i think part of their sound on the midcrime clean channels was a stereo ripley guitar, that or just a stereo guitar in general. Van Halen used the stereo ripley too. you can set the volume for each string and pan the pickups however you want.
Great lesson! Absolutely love this album, and all their first 4 albums (and EP). Their growth from their EP to Warning, Rage for Order and Mindcrime was incredible. I do think Mindcrime was influenced by Pink Floyds The Wall, which had lots of clean/acoustic interludes. Not to take anything away from Mindcrime, it stands on its own as one of the greatest concept albums.
Awesome! Queensryche friggin ruled! Saw them on this tour, and Empire. I got to be a roadie for a day and help set-up their stage for Empire, and meet them all at NDSU in Fargo in 1991. All really nice guys. I almost drove them all to Mpls to catch a flight after the show. Probably a good thing I didn't cuz I was a super-fan and would have been bugging them non-stop, lol!
You just made the case for geof tate being the best lead singer ever. Imagine throwing that set of madness at your lead singer and have them not only be able to sing as well as he does but to create the songs that he did. I don't know how they wrote together but damn... I am a guitar nut bag as bad as anyone.... But Without the vocals that stuff is coarse on the edge of wtf.
David, this episode is excellent. It's only missing all the other songs on Mindcrime (no pressure!). Used to drive 5 nights a week back and forth along the California coast from the East Bay to Santa Cruz, BLASTING this album with the windows down, singing/screaming along with Geoff's great voice, always in awe of the riffs. I'm ALL IN on Metal Month thanks to you. There's never a need to apologize for what you love. There are no "guilty" pleasures. If something gives you pleasure, just enjoy it to the fullest. I'll be tuning in as often as I can, hoping you get around to DIO's Holy Diver before Halloween... Cheers! LW
Love Suite Sister Mary. Was it just me expecting the electric to kick in at one point? LOL Waiting For 22 is one of those ear candy songs too. Looking forward to this month!! \m/ \m/
Thank you for this lesson. I loved the Dream Theater one, Images and Words and Awake are heaven to me. I recently saw a JP lessons talking about stealing chord ideas from Mind Crime and low and behold this episode appears!
Hey Dave, here's a great theme for a chordplay, from a band i really love which is... Yes. Specially, from the albums 90125 and Big Generator... there's some very interesting pop prog rock chord sequences on those two albums, by Trevor Rabin (great guitar player, great guitar tones and very tasty soloing).
This is one of best teachers to student lesson I've ever heard. The detailed description from understanding the actual chord name and structure makes all the difference in the world. I've had so many awful teachers who I believe never understood music. Or how to actually pronounce the proper chord language as spoken in this video. Had I actually been taught this understanding years ago I may have been a great player. Wow your a special teacher for sure. Thanks. Also Savatage has some super creepy Halloween sounding chords.
Love this album, probably played it most of any over the years, light and shade, dynamics, earlier songs,London and lady wore black show these subtleties but mindcrime took the band to another level, great video👍 Fates warning, through different eyes
The Mission has one of the greatest acoustic intros, it sounds so dark and mysterious and you can wow your friends and family in the parlor with that one. Sometimes the simplest patterns sound so massively cool! I’m with you David, I live for October and Halloween 🎃 👻 👹 💀 🧙♀️ . Thanks for this, what a beautiful and thorough job on the clean chords of ‘Ryche.
This is one of your best vids by the way. A part of me doesn't even want to know how these songs are played. I could never figure it out on my own so it's always been a very mysterious unplayable album for me. I almost don't want to know how they're played. But thank you.
Listening to just these chords and how they move and create these soundscapes is a masterclass. DeGarmo and Wilton where an awesome song writing team. I’m sure they worked together to come up with these interesting progressions. This is what gave Queensryche a progressive sound and made them unique.
Saw the Operation mindcrime tour in San Antonio, TX. They played the entire album and played additional songs from other albums. Three hour show, unbelievable. Good lesson David, as usual.
Love the 'ryche, I think Livecrime just edges the studio album with the tight playing, vocals and the intensity of the raging crowd. Im not a fwn of whole live albums but this one is superb
David..bro... I can't begin to tell you how cool these chord to song lessons are! AWESOME TECHNIQUE! My playing has improved in leaps and bounds from thhis! Thanks buddy! I look forward to your album release.. Thanks again! John Liszewski
When i was 20, the mindcrime album, start to finish, was my vocal rehearsal tool, daily. I introduced my wife to it in the 90’s, and she also fell in love with the album. However, she has a hard time listening to it. Because Mary always dies.
Chris was the master mind of Queensryche!!🤘
Truth!
100%
It all went downhill when he left
Waiting for 22 is gorgeous and then you add the haunting slide guitar and it becomes a masterpiece!
I saw "operation mind crime" by mistake.....went to see suicidal tendencies only...decided to hang out for the next band and it changed my life..
I saw them open for Kiss and later AC/DC. I was blown away by their live performance. Love them 👍
lol i saw that show
I bought all their albums up to that point after that show the next day!
Waiting for 22 is just an little interlude but so beautiful.
Always on the mark David. Great work, another one of my favourite albums dissected, analysed and well presented. Thank you.
Best rock opera ever.
Chris DeGarmo, was the BADASSAZZZZZZZ who put all these cool sounding riffs together!!!! He was QUEENSRYCHE!!!!!
One of the best albums of all time. I wore this cassette out several times. Now that I've gotten into music theory the past year I've been revisiting this and loving it all over again. Thanks for sharing this.
Goosebumps, still goosebumps.
My son never understood why the password on an old device had been W8ing422.
awesome man, you are the best! Metal every day 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Dave...don’t ever feel the need to apologize for your taste in music...you have excellent taste in music, because it’s exactly like mine!!....rock on my brother!!!

Chris and Michael were so good live!! I miss the original line up. Met them a couple times in the 80s super cool guys
Mindcrime is a masterpiece. For me it's right up there with The Wall.
Thank-you!
"I'm a metal head, first and foremost"
We love you for that!
🤘🤘🤘😘😘😘
This Metal Month us killer!!! Loved this lesson!!! Late Night Lessons rule!!!
Waited years for this thanks will keep me busy for a while 🤩🤟
Operation Mindcrime is one of the best albums of that era! The best recorded by Queensryche, in my opinion.
I love Mindcrime. I love your channel. Thank you for this.
[PS - you'll hear no complaints from me re: Metal Month]
One of the greatest rock albums of all time
Sister Mary man that was such a haunting sound saw them on this tour flawless performance they were such technical players Chris and Michael nobody could touch them at that time 87 I think it's been some years another home run David 👍👍🤘🤘👏👏
Awesome lesson Dave would like to hear some older Queensryche lessons off The Warning and Rage for Order…keep shreddin!’ and rocking!! 🎸🎸🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks B 🐓!
Saw them tour this album in UK - supported by original Lynch Mob lineup - a truly stunning show ..
Yes i seen them in Newport centre Wales its in my top 10 gigs of all time
More metal, more Queensrychre! Rock on.
Definitely one of the all time great guitar duos! Wilton and Degarmo played off each other so well. Chris was (is) a master of tone and Wilton can shred with the best of them. This album never get old. Still ahead of its time and ours.

Dave just kick started you, so have fun!
Killer. You saved me a lot of time!! Ties in with your Al Dimeola lesson with all those string skipped odd chords. Love that you point out timing idiosyncrasies where warranted.
Giant 👍!!!
Some of those cool open voiced chord with note rubs reminded me of Satriani’s “Lords of Karma” 🤘
Huge Queensryche fan! Great lesson.
Yay! Baffling how good that album STILL sounds today. Great lesson as always, thanks!
This album should be a movie
Geoff Tate had mentioned it was going to be made into a movie, several times. However, the last interview he spoke about it. That was back in 2017. I am not sure what became of it.
Love this album and all of the awesome guitar parts. So much great playing packed into one album.

Probably my all time favorite album! 🤟🏼
Metal head!!! Fuck yeah!!! Another awesome video, love how you break down the artists?
Awesome!

Fantastic episode, please include something from Savatage or Vicious Rumors, they are a perfect match for Halloween and metal month 🦇🎃👌👌
keep the metal flowing
thank you

One of the BEST albums on Earth!
There are always more chords to explore with Queensryche! Thanks, David!
Get the Livecrime DVD. Flawless.
Love Suite Sister Mary. Was it just me expecting the electric to kick in at one point? LOL Waiting For 22 is one of those ear candy songs too.

Your tone on this video sounds like a banjo. really cool! thanks for the lesson. this album blew me away when I first heard it.
The month of "Rocktober rules!!!
Nice Chords, Metal Month you better do King Diamond Chords riffs and Melodic solos more King Diamond.
I second this!
Hail to the King baby!

Fates warning,through different eyes
one of the best albums ever....thx for great videos!!
This album is EPIC and will be always
Do you teach kids? You have a very calming voice and kids would totally listen to you teach them
The Mission has one of the greatest acoustic intros, it sounds so dark and mysterious and you can wow your friends and family in the parlor with that one. Thanks for this, what a beautiful and thorough job on the clean chords of ‘Ryche.
You've made me want to listen to the whole album now
Love that "I Don't Believe in Love" chord sequence. De Garmo and Wilton are masters of rhythm guitar and cool riffs
Don't think you've ever done anything by Mercyful Fate yet? Just an idea if I'm right. Thanks for the Queensryche!
That would be excellent!
Hell yeah! Halloween special with Mercyful Fate would be awesome.
Denner & Sherman 🤘
Well, I know what I'm jamming with today. Thanks David!
This is one of your best vids by the way.
A part of me doesn't even want to know how these songs are played. I could never figure it out on my own so it's always been a very mysterious unplayable album for me. I almost don't want to know how they're played. But thank you.
The Guitar tones, styles, emotion are unique, incredible on Operation MC. Music that takes you somewhere.
Yeah.....time to intonate my guitar. Super cool lesson thanks.

🤘for metal month.
Awesome as always!!!
Empty room today
And here I sit
Chalk outline upon the wall
I remember tracing it
A thousand times
Oh, the night she died
Why? Why?
Love the 'ryche, I think Livecrime just edges the studio album with the tight playing, vocals and the intensity of the raging crowd. Im not a fwn of whole live albums but this one is superb
Awesome! And Thanks!
David..bro...
I can't begin to tell you how cool these chord to song lessons are! AWESOME TECHNIQUE! My playing has improved in leaps and bounds from thhis! Thanks buddy!
I look forward to your album release..
Thanks again!
John Liszewski
Totally Excellent. Thanks so much again for these vids.
Awesome record. Thanks. Can you do some of the lead work for those. Would greatly appreciate it. Thanks
Great vid!! Love QR and this epic album in particular.. 💯💯💯
Mind crime was such a masterpiece
When i was 20, the mindcrime album, start to finish, was my vocal rehearsal tool, daily. I introduced my wife to it in the 90’s, and she also fell in love with the album. However, she has a hard time listening to it.
Because Mary always dies.
Waiting for 22 is such a beautiful song
Killer lesson 🤘🏻🤘🏻
This was great! im two years late to the party. but I subscribed for more and more!.
Masterful lesson!
Looking forward to this month’s lessons!
Great lessons David. I’m looking forward to part 3 of your Queensryche trilogy 😄
Great Stuff Dave....
My favorite band of ALL time !!! \m/ \m/
Great shirt, I got one just like it
Really cool chords that I can't play. Thanks for spotlighting the progressive artistry in these chords. These songs only age better with time.
Keep trying! With patience and daily practice you can play them😃
Haunting. Great CD.
I love this video. Thank you.
Let Rocktober begin. 💀
Man these guys were wizards when it came to chord Progressions. Prop to Tate for singing such good melodies over all this madness
