How to Build a Long Lasting Fence with LP Elements

- LP sent me some new fence pickets to try out on my own home. Here's what I like about LP Elements Fencing and how I built the fence.
LP Elements fence pickets, like most LP products, are an engineered wood product. This means that the pickets are made from wood strands (think super precise wood chips, not pulp) that are mixed with resin, binders and mold and insect resisting agents and then heated and pressed into a super dense, super durable fence picket. The picket is then coated to further protect it from the sun and elements.
LP Elements fence pickets have been put through the paces everywhere from the hot UV drenched deserts of Arizona to the rainforests of the Northwest and from the hot humid coasts of Florida to the freezing temperature of Alaska! LP is so confident in the Elements product that is is offered with a 10 year(!) warranty. That is, if you install it correctly.
The rest of the fence needs to be built with longevity as a primary goal as well. I decided to use cedar for the rails and metal posts concreted into the very hard and rocky ground. The metal posts should last a lifetime, as they are hot dip galvanized and we excavated the post holes with chisels and jackhammers. The cedar rails is probably the component that I am most concerned about, as I expect the LP Elements fence pickets to outlast the wood!
Speaking of rails; you will need to install at least three rails across the fence spaced no more than 8 inches from the top and bottom of the picket and no more than 30 inches apart.
I used screws for all of the fasteners as it just doesn't make sense to have a fence where the fasteners could fail before the fence pickets!
This fence has been installed for a few months now and it looks great! Check back in 10 years or so and I'll do an update on how it is holding up.
I’ve had a western cedar fence for 23 years! I put it up with SS nails. I’ve pressure washed it twice in that time. Still looks good.
Thanks for keeping us “posted”. 😁
great review!
Whoa. Who's this guy? Looks vaguely familiar. Long time no see
I definitely love mine gray as well!!
Cool video
It's like Christmas when a new Jordan Smith video appears!
Dude, your icon looks like minutephysics' icon without my glasses and I was super confused why they were talking about building fences.
Jordan, thank you for the information. What is the cost comparison to cedar and/or treated fence products?
Where is the ad disclosure, also the title is "How to Build".
What about cost
Yeah, I can bet it's not cheap, but if it lasts a long time, it may be worth it to the right client.
Just think if a regular fence lasts 10 years...? and this stuff lasts 20 years you save the money of the materials and the labour twice.
Need to know more about it, not for everyone, but I'm sure the higher end clients that want a long term solution it would be a good fit.
Cheers from Tokyo!
HD has the pickets for $113.23/12-pack.
From my understanding the painting schedule is determined by the cracking of paint on the edges. With the edges being butt together, how does one paint them and check for maintenance. Cracks will form on the edges and then water will gain access and rot material.
I'm on the fence
I’m still making money replacing the first GEN LP OSB siding, maybe I’ll have Fencing business in the future replacing LP OSP fencing
Home Depot is out of stock in stores and online. WHERE CAN YOU BUY THIS PRODUCT?
I had two questions, #1 what kind of screws did you use instead of the .097 shank diameter nails? #2 if you went to all that trouble to make a fence last what kind of wood or other acceptable material can you use for the rails to make them equally durable, to me, in the video that looks like tge weakest link in the chain. Wondering what alternative there is
I use a galvanized steel I beam 2 inch two stringers and tie them into either a steel post or concrete post and then mount the stainless steel screws. But I have only had two client ever do that and it was just the front fence that was street view and thwy had money cause it cost a litteral shit ton. But if you wanted to make a forever fence. Honestly would be better to shsubun the wood and hop for the best.
Any comments on how this engineered wood product compares with, say, Trex - a plastic/wood composite? Trex is almost always just decking (not vertical) but there seem to be some parallels. I'd be interested to hear a professional break down the differences.
I got a couple samples of this from LP over a year ago. Great product... but I'll echo what others have said about the price. Yikes!
Where do you buy it?
10 year warranty? Wow, you're not going to find that kind of warranty on most fence products. I'm so interested now!
Not at $12 bucks a board
@@Floreypottery seriously. A properly maintained fence can last 10-20 years. I can't figure out the value added here..
@@apex007 me either cause I agree my fence is around 20 half of its still good the other half I’m replacing this year
@@Floreypottery Well, a premium cedar 5/8 x 6 x 8 is $6.50 and this thing will last a lot longer than that cedar board.
You didn't mention anything about maintenance. Is there a recommended maintenance schedule for this product?
edit:
I just priced this product on the HD (orange box store) site, and I must say they are proud of their product. At least in the northern Utah area this stuff sells for around 22.71/ft. That's extremely expensive if you ask me. And all you get is the pickets. I can get a high quality vinyl fence but get the entire fence (pickets, posts and rails) for cheaper in my area actually, so it just doesn't seem worth it to me.
Note that I have nothing against LP products. I'm a big fan of LP Smart Siding and have used it tons in the past. As a matter of fact, I'm getting ready to start a remodel on a 1968, 5-bedroom home I purchased that I'm going to keep as a rental unit. Wouldn't think of using any other siding than LP Smartside. But they gonna have to come off their price on this LP Elements for me to get it. And that sucks too cause I was really excited when I watched the video. A fence is in the budget and on the list of must dos for this home.
Yeah but plastic fences are hillbilly
Fences do not look nice after 4 moths, you’ll get gaps because wood is usually wet and even if you install perfect you’ll get up to 1/2 gaps. Warps also can happen. You need to overlap pickets if you wanna guarantee no gaps, and that’s a lot more cost. Hopefully the price for these is competitive.
Jorden where you been!?
Jordan where have you been
They must be out of business, cannot find them anywhere.
The pickets on his left are out of plumb.
So at $12 a board a 6 foot panel would cost 136 bucks or so just for the boards price is.high probably 200 a panel after the cedar backers etc
I've seen composite run almost 100 a panel without the posts. But at least composite will last longer.
Let me again point out why this channel is not growing. Not a single reply from jordan to any of the numerous questions asked.
Cheap materials that do last a long time looking how they look. Dog eared ha ha ha. Great vid on a new material. But again, cheap materials. They are just not going to last as long as fence wood split to the grain lasting longer than the nails and wire it is held togethr with. Nobody needs 20 years or more out of a fence though now becasue manufacturers have put it in people's minds that they should be replacing stuff and having to maintain it year on year. And why not. People like a change and like yearly maintenance :)
Fences, decks and docks should be made from 100% recycled plastic materials.
Something needs to be done with all the plastic waste that is being produced and polluting the environment.
More companies need to use recycled materials in their manufacturing process.
They would stand up for the long term as well.
