In this video Tutorial we go through the process of starting to create some seamless and tileable surface/environment textures from Gaea for use in any 3D software. Specifically in this video we will be creating a Rocky Cliff Wall Texture, having a basic knowledge of Gaea is recommended.

awesome tutorial! I wonder how well Gaea comparing to substance designer when creating these type of terain material/texture

S-Designer is league above in term of rendering optimisation, after seeing this video, Gaea (intended to make terrains) could be used as a really solid alternative to make that specific type of material surfaces (rock cliff, mudd puddles and everything in between), as Gaea might have more specific tools and its terrains tool can also do that. So it does compare pretty well as long as you dont need fast rendering (or have an absolute powerhouse computer) and are making that type of niche content (and not something else like leather, a brick wall, frayed paper on a pole surface). While using Gaea for Material authoring (what SD is actually for) it might be possible to completely disable the 3D view , opening the possibility for reasonnable performance in the process.

Thanks for the tutorial. I have no experience with Gaea, from the video the app seems to be unreasonably slow, even at 512 resolution, that's quite concerning..

You can download a free version of it in their official webpage, maybe its the recording or something specific

Yeah try it out if your interested, honestly it runs a bit slow because I am recording at 4k.
But I've used a lot of heightmap generation software's and even though Gaea may not be the best performing, it has some of the best features and best Erosion/nodes.
Also Gaea 2 is coming out in 2024 which has a huge improvement in performance and a bunch of other features.

I use it and its like 10 times faster than this normally, I thought the same thing, I think its just his pc + recording.
