There can never be another Gary Burton -- the absolute master of the vibraphone.
This lineup is astonishing. Their tightness and intuitiveness as a band, even with some very complex songs, is extraordinary.

Back when Pat’s 175 still had two pickups! Amazing!

I've come back to this video a few times and can now commit to saying their performance on Falling Grace is stunning, mind blowing. Complete destruction. Burton's solo intro...listen to those inner voices moving at that tempo. Swallow...what an incredible musician, and incredible improviser during and post solo. His hands and brain are full of music. And Metheny, to play with that much energy over so many changes with a tone so clean? This band was insane and I wish it didn't take me 35 years to appreciate them.

Gary’s sense of groove or time and melodic phrasing is amazing. He was truly born to be the most innovative vibist ever.

This concert/band is so great. Who plays Carla Bley's music anymore? Such a great composer.

Amazing how Gary Burton found and fostered Pat Metheny and found and fostered Julian Lage - both the greatest Jazz guitarists of their generation. I keep wondering what PM thinks about JL. It simply doesn't make sense that they don't play together.

That would be good to see. But you know, neither one really needs another guitar player in the band, and (particularly) Pat's sound takes up a lot of space.

@@lightaces I hope I caught the bit of sarcasm, and if so, I'd share it. I'd love seeing the two do a duet, see and hear their minds link up. But it seems to me they are avoiding each other.

@@dumena My guess is more that they just run in different circles these days. I'll admit, I'm not super familiar with Julian Lange's career, but how many collaborators do they have in common? From what I've seen, Julian is more connected with contemporary Bluegrass (Live from Here, et. all) and alt-rock (Nels Cline) side of Jazz. Pat's a bit more on the classic post bop and new age side of things. (Even his most frequent pop collaboration is Bruce Hornsby, is really a be bop piano player.)

@@lightaces Very good points. JL played with Chris Thile (but that was contemporary Bluegrass), who worked with Brad Mehldau, who worked with Metheny. They both name Jim Hall as one of their biggest inspirations, both had Gary Burton as their mentor... Well, I‘ll keep on wishing :-) Think of the two of them doing Bright Size Life as a duet (like, the entire record). I‘d love to hear that. If you haven‘t followed JL‘s work closely yet, go right at it and treat yourself. It‘s plain amazing how he keeps changing styles, always on an absolutely stunning level.

Being a wunderkind himself, Gary clearly enjoyed hiring, presenting and challenging others in the same category.
I don't know now, but i DO know PM was a big supporter and helpmate to Julian. I suspect there's nothing but warmth there. It's impossible to feel anything other than that towards Julian.
As to "why don't they play together"... All in due time, I'm sure.
