I lucked out. My Norman started fetching and bringing the ball back right away without training. He puts it in my hand most of the time. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the ball is in my hand.
My cat loves to play fetch, but he doesn't bring it to my hand, he rather just places it in front of me. I am sure he will love this trick, thank you so much!!
Personally, my absolute FAVE moment is when I see a cat I am 'training' stop, sit, think a moment, then give that "I'm done with this" look and walks away, usually followed by ME saying, "Okay, buddy... later!", followed by some sort of acknowledgment "Meow" back over the shoulder. I truly feel sorry for people who just do not GET the intelligence of cats.
Penny is a pro at half-fetch. I throw the toy, she chases it, picks it up (sometimes giving it the death shake), then drops it in front of herself and looks up with pride and a tail twitch.
Just saying I defo recommend you the cat training school clicker and pointer , bought it on Amazon and it is amazing one of my cats mastered the high five ( highly recommended)
My cat used to play fetch all the time without much training at all. Now he won't bring them back to me. This is a great video to refresh his skills. Thank you! My cat looks just like Jones, we named him Toothless (from how to train your dragon)
My cat is already very playful and she always picks up the ball in her when I throw it to her but never brings it back! Thanks sooo much for this video, it helped a lot to get her to learn the trick 😍Keep up the good work! 😉
My 10 week old Siberian loves to sit by me and wait for me to throw his pompom ball and will wait for it to land and he rushes over and picks it up, but doesn’t bring it back. So glad I found this video!
This is *just* the video I’ve been wishing for! My cat does tricks for treats twice a day without fail. She likes to run after a thrown mouse or other small toy, but is not sure what to do with it when she gets there. Fetching would seem to be good to prolong play, but I didn’t know how to train her for it. I only knew it was complex. Thanks for these steps to getting us started!
Thanks! I'm gonna give it a try. I appreciate seeing how you have taken Jones so far with an activity that isn't a natural for him. Figuring out the step-by-step strategy is the challenge at this stage of my beginner cat training days. We train several times a day, and he loves it. I'm pretty sure it's all about the food, but he purrs his way through. Sometimes he'll tell me that he thinks it's time for a training session by just starting to do tricks on his own. So cute! Thanks again!
By the way, my boy does fetch now. Kind of. It's not a natural thing for him to do. But he'll bring something I ask him to from about 18 inches away and put it in my hand. Usually. Took him a few weeks. Maybe a month. But he gets it now. It won't be like playing fetch. It's just a trick for him. I have since learned that cats don't see well up close, so that may be why he usually touches my hand with his paw too when he puts the toy in it. Training some simple things take a day, or one session. Other things take a month. But it's all fun! For both of us!
My cat wasn’t introduced to fetch and one day he started dropping his toy and meowing so I just decided to throw his toy and since then it’s been an everyday thing. He will bring back that toy until he’s panting like a dog, then at that point he goes to tug of war. I always give treats or a meal after each play session. He’s almost fully trained. He listens to being told no, doesn’t climb counters/tables even when I’m not present, comes when he is called, he knows sit, stay, paw, lay down, roll over and I’m working on training him to play dead. I also have him leash trained. Probably the smartest cat I’ve ever been around
Our 8 week old kitten brought me one of her toys, and I tossed it across the room. She played bunny kicking it and brought it back near me after about 30 seconds. After a few days of (pretty clueless) training, I can now throw it down the hallway and she will run and get it. Has trouble tracking it sometimes, but, I’m amazed she just started doing this!
thank you, your videos have helped me teach my cat so many tricks, i coincidentally have the same balls and my cat won't play with it (yet), this is gonna be his next training!
Hi catteacher :) ! With Prusky we are now back on the training of that skill we are like at the 2:41 on the video . He pick up the toy only if i present it to him not in my hand and i quicly put my hand under his mouth to receive it . we are going to try to transistion to he has to pick it up in my open hand
This is the one I just haven't been sure how to teach Ajani. He loves his clicker training (or at least the treats he gets for doing his clicker training) and I had no clue how to break this down for him. He picks up on things I come up with so quickly sometimes. . .getting him master a specific target spot is the hardest thing.
I absolutely love this training. I'm following it with my 5mo kitten. We're now at the point where he picks up a paper ball from my hand and I'm lowering it. A couple of times he picked a ball from the floor, but not consistently yet. Still long way to go 😅 Many years ago i had a cat who played fetch naturally with me, it was awesome 😊
oo thank you! can’t wait to try this with my cat!! she’s a weird one and only fetches effortlessly when i’m brushing my teeth. she would bring her toy to me on her own terms while i’m brushing my teeth and wait for me to throw it. once i do, she’ll run after it and drops back right in front of me. when i’ve tried to do this other times of day/when i’m not brushing my teeth, she will just chase after the toy but doesn’t bring it back. lol so i’ll have to give this a go and report back
I'm stuck at the first part, cause my cat only touch with his nose the paper then starts licking the food off of the paper tube. How do I make him bite it?
I throw hair ties up in the air and my cat loves to jump and catch them. He usually leaves them on he floor or shoves them under the door for safekeeping. I would love to train him to bring them back to me so I dont always have to fetch them myself!
My cat Hunter (see my profile pic) can already fetch sort of, but only with a few toys, one is a mouse and one is a string. But he does not always fetch and also lays it on the floor besides me, not in my hand. so i will definitely try this! Also i love your videos, so keep up the good work! i think you 2 are awesome and it also shows how awesome black cats are!
My cat and I watched this video together a couple of days ago, and then he basically just started doing it on his own. No, I'm not kidding. We're still working on the hand-drop part though.
My cat, Red Boy loves to play “go fetch”. Only took me an hour to train without food treats. I only talked to him saying “go fetch” and I’d toss the mousey toy and or other stuffed toys. Once he brings it brought it to me, I would say thank you and praise him with a little back rub! Now he would meow non-stop with toy in his mouth until he finds me. He would drop it by my feet still meowing. His way of asking me to play go-fetch with him.
My Beo taught me this trick. He brings straw/twisted paper/plastic piece to me, wait for me to throw it away so he can grab it back. Midnight is his favorite play time and he love to wake me up to play with him until he’s tired. No one teach him anything, he just do the trick himself.
My 7 month old female rescue feral kitten some how loves to play pitch and catch! It's amazing! It's a little ball ring toy . If I thought it about 20 feet she will bring it back to me in her mouth and drop it. And can't wait for me to do it again. If she gets distracted game over
My cat already know the forwade step, he love when I give him some candy wrappers and throw them on the ground far away, when it makes landing sound, he runs to them and play with them like a football, but they don't know how to pick them up.
I'm getting a cat soon and I am wondering how long you spend on each session of training? What is a healthy amount of treats to give before you stop for the day?
Hi, I hope you might have some advice for me. I’m at the point where my cat should be picking up the ball off the floor and dropping in the lid. She just isn’t getting it. She will pick up the ball from the lid (up to a low height), while the lid is on the floor, and drop it back in, but if she accidentally drops it on the floor instead then she doesn’t understand that it needs to be back in the lid. If I start off with the ball in front of the lid, she just drops it on the floor, and sometimes she employs her paw a little and the ball gets stuck in her claw. Anyways I’m trying to figure out when I should give up. I really don’t want to quit….. it’s been at least a month total of working with her on this - much more time than other clicker training tricks etc that she understood much more quickly.
Amazing explanation. I subscribed to your course I think 1 or 2 years ago and I remember I made a huge step with my cat. Good to see that you are adding even more videos
My cat just started doing this randomly all on his own. Usually around bedtime. His favorite toys are rubber bands. He would bring them on the bed and wait and we just started throwing it and he’d bring it back
I think it also can transition to play without treats in that you give a cat the foundational skills. Mine happily chases, but she needs to learn to pick it up so that she can bring it back to me, and I think if I can show her how to do that then she will very much enjoy fetch without treats.
My late Patsy learnt it by himself, I throw him the ball away and surprisingly he returned it to me, honestly it was naturally happening without training.... I miss him so much !..
My cat was obsessed with q tips the ear cleaners. Its hers favourite toy and then when i would throw it she would catch it and slowly bring it back to me
Thank you so much for these videos! I have taught a LOT of dogs a LOT of tricks but I'm working on my first cat trick titles through Do More With Your Dogs and a few times I haven't been sure the easiest way to train some behaviors for my cat and your videos have helped tremendously! I really appreciate you putting these together. Oh - to answer the question, Mowgli is not at all playful, except like your cat, pawing and shoe strings and the like.
Not sure how I accidentally trained my cat to fetch, but she loved it. She used to put one of her toys in my lap then paw at me until I threw it. She would run after it and bring it back to me, rinse and repeat.
My 7 month old boy naturally learned to fetch his Koala plushie. We never showed him or rewarded him and he will nuzzle or meow if we don't throw the toy.
My cat loves his wand toys- the bigger and more ribbons or sparkly stuff, the better! He especially loves his unicorn and sometimes carries it in his mouth and bring it to me while he meows (telling me he wants to play). He also will "fetch" the unicorn at the end of the wand if I put it at the top of his cat tree, but he brings it to the floor and drops it under my desk. I'm really hopeful I can somehow train him on the whole fetch process!
My cat _looooooves_ to chase a toy when I throw it, and he knows to comes back to me so that he gets the distance to run after the toy when I throw it again. He just doesn't pick up the toy with his mouth to bring it back to me, so I have to get up and get it myself. 🤣
My cat legit fetches naturally, he just one day was playing with a ball and brought it to me and dropped it, looking at me waiting for me to throw it again lol. I might have a dog in a cat's body idk, but he's a Siamese if that explains. He's like...super smart !
My kitten trained me to play fetch. I never trained her. I play with my kitten everyday but maybe I wasn’t noticing she wanted playtime at that moment so I guess she thought she would train me to throw her toy while I am sat on the sofa 😂
Haha. My cat loves to watch videos with other cats and everytime you threw the toy my cat would adorably tap at the toy on my phone. My cat brings toys to us but when we are sleeping or on the computer. We play with him but the doesn't bring it back. He chases and then sits down waiting for us to get it lol. Maybe he has us reverse trained. Would love to get him to bring it back. He is such an energetic cat.
My Abyssinian cat brings me a stick with a thread tied to it, but only when I throw it in one direction. When I throw it from kitchen to the living room he brings it back, but not the opposite. He used to bring it from any place, but now he has a strong connection and he doesn't bring other toys. My really has fun doing this, he begs me to play fetch but doesn't do it the right way. I need to teach him to bring the toy where I am.
My cat got bored after a while we were just about to start picking up the paper from the floor maybe later but she’s doing so well as this is her first trick
My cats have always played fetch. Get a piece of paper and tear a piece off in front of them, crumble into a ball( about the size of a pinball) it in front of them, put it on the floor and flick it. They will play all day long.
Wow, how quick he picked that up, pardon the pun haha. My cat has no interest in toys, she is all about attention. We are currently learning buttons and she just loves to train and interact. I know that you will probably think that this is wrong, but with button training she started making repeated mistakes so I had to start saying "no". Interestingly, whilst I said "no, that's wrong try again" she would purr her loudest. Perhaps it was because I always found something to reward her for within half a minute if she made a mistake so she always knew that treats were coming. I also think it is very important to close sessions. I have always ended periods of being given treats with "No more" and I show her both of my palms so she can see that they are empty, is this something you do too? Anyway, thank you for the video, I must try this at some point now I know how to do it.
Help plz, she understod to pick it up But she doesnt connect it to my hand! She thinks she is Done when she has bitten it or just picked it up slightly and I can’t seem to figure out how to help her understand 😩
My cat loves to play soccer with his tinsel balls, and if it's in a bad location he picks it up in his mouth and carries it to another location. But I came to this video because I feel like he would love figuring out how to play with me with it
Hello , my kitten is likes the spring n he picks it up from his mouth I have established that once he picks up with his mouth he gets a treat but he doesn’t understand that he needs to give it back to me. How to go past that ?
I need to add two extra steps 🙈 first, they are so excited, that they often use their paws instead of their mouth. Second, one of my cats likes to run away with the toy once he picks it up 😅 still a bit of training ahead of us...
Both of my cats pick up toys. One, Onyx, barely does and has weak fetch potential. The other one, Roran, has high fetch potential and is constantly picking toys up, dropping them in certain places like at his "bed" and has even been bringing it to me rarely. He's only 4 months old. I clicker trained them a month ago very easily, but I haven't started teaching them tricks till now. I started teaching fetch earlier today, I kinda started teaching it by throwing the ball in which Roran always runs after it, at first he would just play with it, pick it up and then drop it in the same spot and walk away. I'd click when he has it in his mouth and at first he would drop it immediately then run to me for the treat. But I'd get up before he got to me, I'd pick it up, have him touch it, then I'd walk back with it, he would follow me, I'd have him touch it again then I'd click and give him a treat. Now after a few 5 minute sessions, he's bringing it back to me half the time, when I click after he picks it up and even sometimes without clicking. As for Onyx, I will probably have to start at the beginning like you did woth yours since he has less motivation for picking up. Very smart cats, just like yours is extremely smart.
Thanks so much for these lessons! We've already taught our cat to stand, but we're finding we're having a hard time with teaching her to fetch. She's very playful, and rather than biting the toy she's swatting at it. She's getting pretty frustrated with the learning process. Do you have any pointers?
I've found that my new kitten has slyly brought me her toys either when I'm asleep or not looking. She just turned 10 weeks and will run after toys I throw, and half the time if she can pick them up, she'll bring them about a foot away from me before dropping it and focusing on something else
My cat Luna(female tuxedo) loves to throw the ball down the stairs and retrieves it and repeats over and over, I believe it would be easy to teach her fetch as she already grasps the concept of fetch just need to include me in the game. Thought I would give your technique a shot, let you know if it works with the clicker/treat process.
in fact my cat started doing it on her own without anyone teaching her - because she loved to hunt the spiked ball which was jumping around wild... so she started bringing me the toy so I can throw it again
I didn't have to train my cat to play fetch, he just does that. One day i threw the ball and he brought it back at my feet, i threw it and he brought it back again. Now it's an havit for him.
Hello. I tried both methods. In the first method, the cat loses interest after they remove the reward from the paper. and in the second method, he just licks the reward from the ball. What else could I try?
I don’t know if this is weird of my cat but my cat doesn’t pick up any of his toys with his mouth… like if his toys fall at the end of the stairs he will leave them there. Is that normal?
My cat goes nuts for the lickable treat, but no matter what dry treat I try he won't touch it. How do you teach some of these tricks where you throw the treat? Is he not able to learn those?
I have a teaser (mouse on string on stick) my black tabby picks it up with his mouth and runs to where he wants to play with it but he doesn’t fetch. My white cat was a rescue and I love her to death but she’s a little slow, she’s a runt so she doesn’t like to play as much as she does laying on peoples faces. Should I play with them separately to get her up to speed?
my girl plays fetch with these weird noodle things, i randomly brought it for myself but then i noticed she liked playing with it so i started throwing it she’d chase and bring it back to me on the bed 😭 but sometimes she leaves the noodle and doesn’t bring it back and ik she still wants to play bc she started crying for me to get it, i’ve been trying to teach her to bring it back by pointing to it and instead she goes by it to sit and wait for me to take it, once i get her to get the bring back park down pack i’m gonna teach her other tricks.
When we got my kitten she used to play fetch with these plastic springs. I never trained her but I'd throw them down the hall and she'd trot back with it in her mouth and drop it in front of me to go again. She seems to have grown out of this behaviour so I'm keen to give this a try. Ever since she's been going outside she's had little interest in play or toys and has become an avid mouser so perhaps training could be a good form of enrichment for her.
Great Video! Do you have an tip for my cat who is not food-motivated? He already likes to fetch but he stops an arm length away from me, so that I can not reward him for putting the toy in my hand or near me
I lucked out. My Norman started fetching and bringing the ball back right away without training. He puts it in my hand most of the time. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the ball is in my hand.

Same
my cat is colorblind or smth she always just runs over it and loses it
My cat does same thing loves to fetch but drops ball right in front of me every time
I can tell my cat wants to play, but with the clicker as soon as I bring treats he completely loses focus

Cats are definitely underestimated but as for me… I didn’t understand this video

He chases the ball but expects me to go to it and throw it again 😂
😂 That's exactly what my girl does I'm the one that's fetching all the time. She goes after it then taps it like it's right here come and get it.
Same with my girl 😂
I feel you all 😅 my boy love to chase the balls, but never bring it back. I hope this lesson will help me to teach him fetching 😊
same here! and he carries his toys around all the time i figured maybe this would be fun 🙂↕️

I will try this method. Teaching my girl to sit, stand and give paw was intuitive and easy - to fetch i didnt even get close to success haha
What kind of treats do you use?
My cat was obsessed with q tips the ear cleaners. Its hers favourite toy and then when i would throw it she would catch it and slowly bring it back to me
Mine has learned fetch on his own, basically he trained me to keep throwing the toy, the fun chase is the reward for him.
Great video, thank you, what treats do you feed Jones?
What kind of treat ball is that orange one? It looks like it can be squishy with just a little pressure.
My 7 month old boy naturally learned to fetch his Koala plushie. We never showed him or rewarded him and he will nuzzle or meow if we don't throw the toy.
Hags (my kitty) will fetch on her own. But just socks. I don't know what it is about socks, but she loves them.
3:20 kittie pump 🤜🤛
Beautiful ❤😊
My Abyssinian cat brings me a stick with a thread tied to it, but only when I throw it in one direction. When I throw it from kitchen to the living room he brings it back, but not the opposite. He used to bring it from any place, but now he has a strong connection and he doesn't bring other toys. My really has fun doing this, he begs me to play fetch but doesn't do it the right way. I need to teach him to bring the toy where I am.
My cat would run around the corner and wait for me so she can smack me 😂
My cat got bored after a while we were just about to start picking up the paper from the floor maybe later but she’s doing so well as this is her first trick
Hi! How many days did Jones go from not interested in toys at all my cat) to dropping the toy into your hand??
How many days of training did it take for Jones to complete fetch?
he uses the toilet though. no litter mess in this house, he has his own guest bathroom.LOL
Literally came here to say, how I taught my cat to fetch: I didn't. He taught me.
One of my Bengals fetches and brings it back on his own. No training. He loves tinfoil balls. It's his favorite game!
My cats have always played fetch. Get a piece of paper and tear a piece off in front of them, crumble into a ball( about the size of a pinball) it in front of them, put it on the floor and flick it. They will play all day long.
How long did it take for him to learn?
Wow! Thanks!!! (a former 'fetch requester')
He's the coolest goodest cutest boy 💋❤
My cat picks up sticks and flips them in his hands like a samurai its crazy as hell i got it on film thinking about posting it on here
Wow, how quick he picked that up, pardon the pun haha.
Luna (my cat) will sometimes run after a toy and pick it up rarely.
My cat fetches the toy and throws in the dustbin. Thanks for this. Helpful
Do you have any pointers?
my cat likes to just pic toys up and walk around the house with them so i might have a good start
I've found that my new kitten has slyly brought me her toys either when I'm asleep or not looking. She just turned 10 weeks and will run after toys I throw, and half the time if she can pick them up, she'll bring them about a foot away from me before dropping it and focusing on something else
One reason your cat plays fetch is it *COULD* be a bombay cat. Please let me know what breed it is.
Or you're just a very good teacher
Cute

@@CatSchool thank you 😊
my cat just does that
my old cat used to love fetch (also just did that)
I never managed to make a dog fetch but it just happened with cats
