I've always done a similar process, but never thought to apply the varnish BEFORE the pigments to help them stick. You never stop learning in this hobby.

If you are using pigments, you could just as well dab some on the lower part of the miniatures. It will feel more natural. But be careful, less is more...

How well do miniatures stick to these types of bases over a long period of time? I’m just barely getting into miniature painting and want to do this but am worried about them not sticking well especially with ones that are grainy.

It's been several days that I was looking for a way to make sand desert bases, and yesterday I found those micro-leaves you're talking about for my Sylvaneth bases ^^ Must be karma!
By the way, wouldn't it be easier to apply the tufts after the pigment steps than before? Like this you wouldn't have to take care about not putting varnish on them, and you would have a more finished global view on your base to place your tufts even better? My 2 cents :) Thanks again for your videos, very inspiring! Keep on the good work!

    • @SquidmarMiniatures

I love how your desert base looks and I can reproduce it on my own minis. However, I intend to use them for gaming, so I need to protect the pigments using a matte varnish rattle can spray. For some reason, I just cannot get it right. Either I spray it too light and the pigments still comes off when you touch it, or I spray it on to thick (I guess) and the pigments turn white. The rest of the mini does NOT turn white with the same amount of spray on it. Do you have any idea what I could be doing wrong and how to prevent it? Thank you!

Do you always do the bases first and glue the minis afterwards? I tried it this way but the models often times look like they stay on top of the environment and not really in it. But on the other hand the basing process is so much easier when there is no mini on the base. :D
