The song is about child abuse!! Luka is the boy next door who many have who has been abused. 'I walked into the door again' is the answer he gives for the bruises... For example.. 'They only hit until you cry..'
This was and still is one of my favorite songs as it describe more or less how we were treated (my brothers and me). And I can confirm that you exactly react that way as a helpless child. Now I found my peace over it. It took nearly 40 years to do all the soul work. Kids deserve to be treated with love.
Went through that growing up. My brother got beat so bad he almost died. It was 1976 and I can still remember him crying out...."DADDY PLEASE DON'T KILL ME !"
So sorry Tim, I know abuse can lead to abuse in future relationships. How is your brother coping?
So sorry to hear this, I hope Y'all are doing? Hugs & kisses Tim
Thank you Jojo🤗❤️
@@jojowhite9296 he abused his wife, kids, and grandkids. He's in prison.
@@timlamb6196 That's so sad and you can see that he was a victim of his environment.
The song deals with the issue of child abuse. On a 1987 Swedish television special, Vega revealed her inspiration for Luka:
A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child-in real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different.[
First time I heard this song I was amazed how well she handled a sad subject.
The song is about raising awareness about child abuse. Luka is the boy upstairs who is being abuse, his confused about why is happening . But he has learnt not to ask why as things will be worse. He will lie if you ask and tell you he fall as he is scared and know he needs to return and is trying to just survive this horrible situation.
She mentioned in an interview that he was never actually abused, but he did bring girls to the door to prove that he was the Luca who lived upstairs from her. So Luca wasn't traumatized by the song he used it to pick up chicks LOL
One of my favorite 80's songs, even though it's about a sad subject - child abuse.
I was in grammar school when it came out. It's a very upbeat 80's tune, though I never took stock of the lyrics until later in life. It's mixed emotions when you have an upbeat tune on a difficult subject.
@@mikeshoe74 Very well said, Mike. Along the same lines, another song that comes to mind is Knowing Me Knowing You by Abba - a great and upbeat tune, but a sad song.
This brings back so many dark memories. I used to be abused to make sure my mom and brothers didn’t receive it I’d act a fool to take their beating as much as I could. Dad’s gone from this existence and I’m reminded by other Christians that I need to find forgiveness. The only people who figured out what was going on were a few classmates who were also abused. We never brought it up that was like 35 years ago
My goodness the 80s had some beautiful music.
I loved this song growing up as it was me, You have a story ready if anyone asks but they never do. The person downstairs they must have heard the noise. “ yes I think I’m okay walked into the door again ,If you ask that’s what I’ll say” means they never asked. Luka is angry that the person is too Busy minding their own business to notice him “It’s not you Business anyway” is said tongue in cheek because all he really wants is for somebody to notice he’s being abused!
I love this song !
Such a sad song about child abuse from the child's (Luka's) point of view told effectively through song. Through music and lyrics via Suzanne Vega, Luka is trying to rationalize the abuse that has happened to him. This song touched many people when it came out in 1987 because it connected to both victims and non-victims of child abuse. The uptempo music was meant to add contrast with the harsh reality of Luka's painful situation.
It does amaze me how many people that have reaction channels haven't a clue what the song is about, it's like they're listening to a different song.
"luka"'s being beaten. Clue in.
You should check out "Hell Is For Children" by Pat Benatar. It deals with similar matter and people who didn't pay attention to the lyrics became our first Karens just because of the song title without further investigating it.
Next time you should pay a little more attention to the songs lyrics.
There is no song more visceral, except ...me and a gun by Tori Amos. It is a cappella and hauntingly beautiful
No No ..honey.
This song is about the Physical Abuse of Young Children.
Very emotional and serious song.
Lyrics are what's going through the little kid's mind.. before and after beatings.
Do Marlena on the wall
You should listen to the 10000 Maniacs song "What's The Matter Here" it has a similar meaning talking about child abuse.
The video makes it obvious that Luka the boy.
"you just don't argue anymore" she cuts away from her reaction and you can hear her breathe. I'm wondering if this song actually triggered something then she shoved it down. after that cutaway she has a very placid expression. almost like disassociating. maybe that's why her discussion of the song is so oddly shallow.
It's about child abuse
The song is about child abuse
Got the hole song wrong
it's an odd reaction video when it's a famous and very simple song about child abuse and you just talk about her being pretty and having a nice voice and going really surface about a deep song.
