  • This is part of the ShivWorks' ECQC Course 'Extreme Close Quarters Concepts' created and taught by Craig Douglas aka 'SouthNarc'. In this video, Craig Douglas teaches retention shooting from the high-pectoral index and puts retention shooting in real-world context. These concepts are tested on the range with live fire and then in hand-to-hand fights in a martial arms gym.

I do believe we ALL owe John a debt of gratitude for this one☝🏼. I honestly believe that this is the first ever “training of a trainer” video I’ve ever seen presented in such a clear and concise manner; and not just another trainers collaboration. Complete respect for the extreme amount of value provided. A HUGE thank you to everyone @ WPS which make this possible. God Bless you and your family Mr. Lovell ! 🙏🏼🇺🇸❤️

One of the best “non-verbal” training tips in this entire video was about 21 minutes in. John’s reload after his second shot was actually an amazing FREE professional tip!! Watch John’s footwork and created space during his reload. Most folks, including myself, would probably simply reload while just standing still during the practice drill. I personally want to thank you, John, for showing us what a real life reload should look like if ever engaged in this type of self defense situation!! Many many thanks! God bless.

Craig, you’ve got every box checked that I can think of: knowledge; expertise; experience; patience; training methodology that works; extensive study and research to test and prove your technique; humility; character; mentality of a teacher vs an instructor (I know you know the difference); safe; effective; limits speaking during training session to only what is necessary to make the point, teach the tactic, and progress the student, maximizing the use of your time and the student’s time (which equals more bang for the buck); does not waste time overdoing the naming the myriad variables in the myriad scenarios that can be encountered; incorporates situational awareness and concern for collateral damage into the training methodology; and on and on. You are the real deal, the whole enchilada, brother.
The work you have put into your approach to training, what you are training, and how you train it, shows in every move you make, every word you speak, and every progression to take the student from crawl to all out sprint, progressively combining steps which quickly create muscle memory that is precise, deliberate and effective. Amazing to witness. If Master Trainer were a recognized title in weapons handling instruction, you would have to be the guy certifying the Master Trainers. Bottom line, I’m thoroughly impressed and hopeful to learn from you, some day. In the meantime, for now, its UA-cam in my basement (non-live fire, of course). Highest regards!

New Warrior Poet student here. After watching this outstanding training video one of my MANY takeaways is what a great STUDENT John is. We all, very likely, agree that John is an excellent instructor. Seeing what a GREAT learner he is reveals why I feel he is such an excellent teacher. An instructor is reciting or regurgitating to a student. Teachers truly educating leaners. I am attempting to delineate between the two while complimenting what I observe is a phenomenal channel of excellent content! Thank you John! Thank you.

Excellent training content and sequences; and adherence to the 'show / demo / direct' pattern. I have rarely seen better (and so carefully controlled) teaching than this on a complex and physical topic - and I have seen a lot, albeit not in a gun/range context. This video is an excellent example, not just in the specific range topic, but in teaching techniques pure and simple.

Love the way that John listens and pays attention. Even with all the experience and training he's had in his life, he still realizes that he doesn't know everything. Proving that EVERYONE is always learning. (If they choose to) I'm sure he could easily say, "I'm a master, not a student". Being humble shows character.
