Elyse your work is very beautiful, I'd love to try to make a balloon but have had many failed attempts using plaster of paris and also other plaster. can you please tell me what the plaster mix is that you use and the ratio? are your balloons latex or specially coated inside? I'd be so pleased if you could let me know your recipe ;)
I use hydrocal plaster--it has a little more give to it when it sets and is very hard once fully cured. The plaster mix ratio is 45g Water to 100g Plaster. You will have to experiment with scaling the ratio to the size of your balloon mold. My success rate when I began was probably around 10%--it's not easy. Air temp is factor as well. Good luck!
I enjoy the process of creating too, not knowing the outcome. I work with metal, however lately I have been working with other materials too. Love your work! And Eits is my favourite band to listen to when I work XD
Lol. it is funny to see you doing this process... I "invented" this method for me not knowing what I am doing and not looking for someone else who did it before. I was experimenting how to produce plaster balls. But iI am filling the balloons with air and then use a bottle with liquid plaster to fill the plaster into the balloon. And afterwards i stabilize everything with epoxy. It is so much fun to make the balls (and it is so much mess if the balloon explodes...) Thanks for showing

Your video is quite inspirational and the outcome is stunning. I'm about to venture and recreate what you made. Quick question, how many minutes do you keep rotating the plaster and balloon before you set it on the table to have a "base"? And (if you have used colored latex balloons) does it stain the plaster if you leave it too long? I have never worked with these materials and I'm quite nervous. Thanks in advance!
Hi There. I don't time the casting process as heat and humidity are a factor. It is really just something you have to practice and get the feel for. I like using clear balloons (though the color of the latex will not transfer) so I can see if the plaster is running down the sides of the balloon--if so, keep rotating! Good luck and have fun (and expect some failures!)

Think about the subtlety that this technique offers. If it were just another colorfully splashed up structure you wouldnt blink an eye. Here the artist gives you just a hint of color (as well as the illusion of dripping up) to draw you to the piece to have a closer look. Simple and clever.
@@renatamuras1058 It still doesn't answer my question. Is it a sculpture? A vase?
