  • The saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know,” SHOULD be posted everywhere when it comes to special education!
Imagine my surprise as I began researching the different types of Autism… only to find out that many terms I hear every day…
    Are no longer valid.
    CONSULTATION CALL / ONLINE ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING;
    specialedresou...
How many times a day do YOU hear the term high-functioning autism?
Well, according to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5th Edition)…
That term is outdated and no longer used amongst the professionals!
There are others that we hear all of the time…
Including; Aspergers, Autistic Disorder, Rett Syndrome have all been eliminated.
Instead, the “new way” of diagnosing different severity regarding autism is through levels.
Today, we unpack what parents need to know regarding autism, how to gauge the severity of the diagnosis, along with the different impairments or disorders often associated with autism.
    Intellectual Impairment
    Language Impairment
    and others…
You most certainly do NOT want to miss this episode of Special Education Decoded!

Wanting to comment to help bump you up the algorithms of the UA-cams. I'm a lvl 1 late DXed female, whom had to make psychiatry/psychology, specifically ASD as a special interest. I want to say that you did a very good job condensing something that is very difficult for most people to comprehend. I feel like you did a phenomenal job using the DSM and conveying this information.

There is permanent herbs to improve and heal autistim. It’s a medicine you can get from Dr Oyalo UA-cam channel, his herbs have made my son improve perfectly in his speech and social skills. He is now verbal, responding to name and instructions.

@Accra Terminal agency it's possible that the herbs were helpful (although I find placebo more likely) but your comment is spam since it's unsolicited advertising that's unrelated to my comment. Also I don't know anyone with autism.

Tips for savvy parents to push back and hold schools accountable up the chain. Especially in this Covid, Virtual world. I am getting pushback for asking for recorded playback zoom meetings, recordings, and transcripts under Assistive Technology, ADA, And IEP for my Autistic son on a Modified Diploma and a long history of therapy school, now in gen ed with supports highschool playing catchup. He was late diagnosis of Autism.

I’m in college and it’s much different. I have to beg my school for accommodations or help. Some Professors do discriminate against me due to my disabilities. I don’t know what to do! I feel like my school isn’t helping me!

My sons psychologist says he doesn't have autism but ADHD. That is isn't always the best to diagnose a child with autism. TO me it seems like she just doesn't like to diagnose autism. Instead she said he has autism tendencies. How is this not Autism?

We have a medical diagnosis for asd but since the school does not like the dr they refuse to give us a iep! 2 different school districts and because he “looks” normal they don’t believe he has an educational need under autism(I’ve even been told they don’t believe he has autism period)

So my friends child at age 6 doesn't speak, at all. He doesn't have any of the behavior tics like spinning, rocking, but just runs around the house CONSTANTLY and grunts. He doesn't really play with toys or watch much TV. He seems to enjoy music and running that's it. Would he fall under level 3? I've suspected autism since he was 3 but his father just won't admit that he may be autistic. The family doctor, mother, and school has him on aderol but I see no difference in his behavior. He also punches, kicks his teachers. I can't seem to get his father to see he really needs help.

My child is well behaved, easy to take care, sleeps, eats and plays well. Her issue is not interested in communication or playing with others. Secondly she does not use words without much deliberation. Even issues such as I want to go to the toilet, she will not speak out though she knows

Hi Ja. Your daughter sounds very much like my son. (3 years 4 months) I'm commenting because this seems to not be usual asd traits. He also is well behaved.. can sit still..very easy going..sleeps..eats and plays well. But hes just not interested socially and is non verbal (says words very occasionally but they are one offs). He understands whats going on around him..just not verbally. Would be interested to get in contact..perhaps we have tips for each other?

I was curious about this because my cousin has Autism and he’s the only experience I have on this subject, but now a days people throw that word around and label anyone with OCD as Autistic so I was curious if I was wrong on this subject or if people are using this as a slur since the R world is more frowned upon these days.
