This is number one for me, mostly because I lost so many friends to drugs and drug life. I see myself in both Carlton and will in this scebe
I'll never talk about wills dad leaving being sad. You look up dead beat dad in the dictionary you'll see his picture.
I'm equally impressed with how Uncle Phil dealt with it. He didn't explode in a fit of impotent rage or start yelling at him abusively; he countered every defence Will had with rational, valuable responses - that he shouldn't even be contemplating taking drugs, that his carelessness almost killed someone close to him, and could have hurt him as well. Then, knowing that Will owned up because he felt remorseful, he decides to make him apologise to the family because he knows that doing so will drive the point home. And then when Will breaks down crying, he goes and hugs him, just to let him know that the lesson has been learned, and everything's okay. Like a proper father.
I wish I had an uncle like Carlton.

I like how he said “you hurt him and you could have hurt yourself” it shows that even though he’s angry he still cares about him.
He sees him as a son too.... Saying that sentence shows both

What Will learns throughout the show even into the very last episode is that Uncle Phil never not cared for him.

Not only that, the fact he addresses Carlton not as his "son" but as "someone dear to Will" is so smooth and better. It's not alienating Will from the "main" family nor making uncle Phil resentful towards him, it shows he cares for Will as if he was his own son and wants Will to realize that.

What's crazy is that Will had no acting experience before this show. The only reason he started doing it was because he had debt out the ass. Who knew he would be this great of an actor?

that episode where Carlton got the gun was also pretty sad. but Carlton was stupid because he could have just given the robber the money and that's it. but Carlton reached into his pocket and the gunman reacted thinking Carlton was reaching for a gun
Carlos Montero That was meant to show Carltons ignorance of the streets. He grew up rich and totally opposit of how Will grew up who had an understanding of what was going on. The whole episode was built around Carltons view of the world changing from the safe, privileged world he grew up into the real world where it doesn't matter how rich you are, you aren't actually as safe you think you are.

Will was brilliant in this scene, but you also have to give props to Uncle Phil. I like how he gave him tough love at first, then he came to Will's aid when he saw him breaking down into tears of guilt. Uncle Phil know how to be strong and gentle at the same time, which why I respect him. One of the best TV dads of all time. Rest In Peace Uncle Phil.

Uncle Phil was the ultimate father figure. He holds Will responsible for his actions, but he never blames him, there's a huge difference. He's also just as concerned for Will as he is for Carlton.

This scene always makes me tear up. The show had a lot of hilarious moments, but the sad moments were really, really sad. This one, including the time Will got shot, and also when his dad left him, were all really emotional.
The reason the scene when his dad leaves is so powerful is because will smith was talking about his real life father.
It WASN'T about Will's dad. Smith did say he had a lot of friends whose dads weren't there for them, and he channeled that emotion he saw from them. Regardless, it was a really powerful scene.

I think Roseanne and even Boy Meets World are up there with this show as the best sitcoms which also had those true to life dramatic moments.

The way he nervously and shamefully moves his body. The way his voice shivers, and those tears... Honest to god, this is some of the best acting I've ever seen. 100% relatable, and it makes you wonder if there was actually something going on at that moment because it looked so real, it makes you doubt it was even acting at all. If an actor can manage that, they are top notch. I saw this show when I was a little kid, but never in its entirety, and never with the capability to fully comprehend everything. I grew up watching Will Smith movies, so I decided to watch this show and truly experience how he started out, and damn, he deserves everything he has.
This show had a lot of heart. There are times where Will is a little self absorbed, but moments like this are really touching. He loves Carlton, despite picking on him, he loves him like a brother and he felt really bad that he could've died, as it would've been his fault. This is what this show was about, it made you think, while entertaining everyone that watched it.

I always love the simple detail that, while Will picks on Carlton, anyone else does it and Will steps up immediately to shut it down.
He is a big brother to Carlton. For all his cousin's goofballness, nobody bullies Carlton but him.
He loves his cousin a lot, so nearly causing his death must have been devastating to him. Absolutely devastating.
This is the moment when Will Smith became a real actor! Putting into a scene strength, sadness and power! The road to becoming one of Hollywoods finest!!!!

Oddly enough in the remake, Belair, Will got caught up in gang violence and Carlton actually is taking drugs.

The way it was said and delivered never ceases to amaze me or make me sob a bit. Will knew he did something horribly wrong and owned up to it like a man and while he broke down, he had the family there to help him through and give him comfort. THAT, is family. Real family. Something a lot of shows don’t show anymore. Easily one of my personal favorite episodes
2:20 Hillary’s face gets me every time. She’s supposed to be the daffy, goofy character of the show, but in this moment, even SHE’S serious and pissed AF!

What I liked about this episode is the fact that when I was growing up in the 1980's, sitcoms showed that kids were forced by other kids to use drugs in order to fit in with the cool crowd. In this episode, we know that Will is cool and that he would not do drugs to fit in with the cool crowd, nor would he ever tell anyone else to do them to be cool.
Kind of makes me wonder how Jazz would do with drugs.
I think he would just sell them.
To stand straight for his mistake and apologies to his family, that‘s real strength.
On three episodes on this show made me cry; This, Will's father, and Will and Carlton at the hospital with the gun

This is why Uncle Phil was Wills true father (figure). He didn't yell or scream, but he didn't let him make any excuses and drove the reality of what happened home. Made him face the people he hurt, and was supportive.

This scene had a lot of impact, especially when someone from the live audience reacted. When you get the audience to react, that means you did a great job and Will delivered on phenomenal levels during his performance here.
Phil was the father Will needed. He treated him like his own and taught him life lessons while never beating him down or judging him. Their relationship was so beautiful to watch. If you didn't know any better, you'd think Phil was the biological uncle instead of Vivian being the biological aunt.
Tell the truth, Uncle Phil is understanding, nice, caring, loving, educated, protective, honorable, instructive, level-headed, patient, humble, inspirational, loving, industrious, playful, bad-tempered at times, altruistic, noble, kind-hearted and sympathetic.

Normally, to me, when I see something like this happen in a show and someone responds the way Uncle Phil did initially, I don't expect them to show anything else. But I remember as a kid being surprised that he still comforted Will after he owned up to what he did.
what I love most about this scene is that they didn't stick in the canned "awww" at the end. It was just complete silence and I think that is what made this scene all the more powerful

You can see how Uncle Phil gave both tough love and understanding love in just the right amount. He went rightfully angry at Will and corrected him that he didn't have any excuse, even got him to apologize to the whole family. BUT then when Will done it all, he hugged him and forgave him. That is a good father right there.
