Uncle Phil is a good example of how a person can be successful and cultured and still remember where they came from and what it took to get there. He wasn’t ashamed of being well off and reaping the benefits of his hard work, but he also acknowledged that there were others who didn’t have the opportunities that he had or the success he had, and he was willing to help and pay it forward. There are too many people who either think success is a moral failing and think someone who has succeeded has lost their roots, but there are also far too many who are well off and successful and take that as a barometer of how good a person they are and they rest on their laurels. My dad is a lot like uncle Phil and so was his dad. We’re white but they came from hard circumstances and they worked hard to make good for the next generation. My dad became successful but never stopped teaching me how important it was to use what you’ve earned and what was given to you to pay it forward and help others. I really want to watch that episode, mainly because it shows both sides of that whole issue. Because as much as some people try to deny it, Adebola shows exactly how there *are* black people who *choose* to not let go of the past and move on, and that such black people are clearly part of the problem with problems when it comes to racial relations. Because what people like her don't realize is that when they *choose* to hold onto their resentment and *choose* to hate white people for whatever happened to them in the past, they're no better than a KKK member, but at least the KKK member would be more open and honest about being racist. I just think that everyone *needs* to just move past the stupid racial crap and let it all go, instead of allowing idiots to keep any of that crap alive.
Well that's true he isn't going about that in the best manner possible. However, that's what makes this such a great episode, everyone is acting very real. You can see why they're all behaving the way that they do, and everything works.
Scenes like this are why Uncle Phil was such a fantastic character. Expecting accountability but showing absolute forgiveness and support. Very well done.
I don't care what anyone says. Uncle Phil was a great father, uncle, and role model. The character is the embodiment of a leader who spawns greatness. RIP James Avery.
All Americans should see Leave it to beaver and the Brady bunch at least once to see how different American tv used to be. I think it was the brady bunch where the parents didnt sleep in the same bed.WTF is that?
Such a versatile actor. My favourite scene in this is when he looks at Vivienne through the mirror, telling her all the little ways in which he loves her. Encouraging her to see herself through his eyes. James Avery put his guts into Uncle Phil: his passion, determination and voice the desire we all have, the desire for equality. I remember him vividly in this show, and as the ever sarcastic villain Shredder in the Ninja Turtles. Even in 2020, it's difficult to believe that he's gone.
Don't devalue him by saying he's perfect. The whole point of Uncle Phil is that he's a man that is not a superhero but a REAL man who has made mistakes and learned from them to pass it down to his children.
I live in Glendale a few blocks away from the place where he passed away, and a few weeks before, I ran into him giving him a simple hello, and he reciprocated in kind. I didn't even know it was him until his passing a few weeks later. Right now, I wished i could've said to him, "You're the best father figure anyone could ask for." Thanks, Uncle Phil. For my childhood.
My uncle is a lot like Uncle Phil in many ways. We're only ten years apart but he's always been one of the most supportive people in my life. And always proud of me. Love you Uncle Tim!
The hardest thing is having your kid ask you why their daddy doesn't want them :( My sons' birthfather left my kids and I to be with another woman. It hurt my heart to see my kids hurting and having to listen to them cry for him hurt even more. Now they're 9 and 11. They haven't seen him since they were babies nor has he made an effort to see them, call or send anything for their birthdays. They call my husband their dad because he has been there and took over the responsibility as their dad and he's all my youngest son knows as his dad. Anyone can lay down and have a baby but it takes a real man to raise them.
The average human isnt qualified to raise a kid even parents who are always in their kids life some kids would be better off if they were not. If you needed surgery would you want someone either unqualified or who doesnt want to do your surgery to perform surgery on you? It is an outdated concept their father could be doing the best for them not being there the only thing he should be required to do is pay half of their basic survival.
Real men earn the title Daddy. Uncle Phil was a wonderful example of a real man. I hope lots of young men learned how to work hard and protect what truly matter, from watching TV dads like Uncle Phil
In the end, the only thing a man can truly have is his family. In this I feel that I have been fortunate beyond measure as I see so much of my mother and father in Uncle Phil. They did their best to make me a good person. I never rolled around with gangs. I never used drugs. I never stayed out late, or got drunk. Thanks to them I stayed out of trouble...mostly. But when I didn’t, they punished me accordingly and ALWAYS made it stick. But most of all, they were always there for me. Every time. Thanks mom and dad.
@@troyandrew6154 Yep. He also said that people still come up to him to this day over that episode; he said a lot of people come up to him and say, "How you gonna leave Will?!"

As someone who grew up without a father and watched this show when it was originally aired, I always dreamed of having Uncle Phil as my dad. I learned more watching him on TV than I could have from anyone else!
I remember that but I didn't watch DS9 at the time, at least not as a fan. Years later sometime after the reboot came out I watched it and the other trek series' and DS9 is my favorite.
Uncle phil showed what true family values mean beyond immediate Family. Something this generation really has lost unfortunately. Bring back more shows with great values and morals.
I wish this show would get the same amount of respect as Seinfeld and Friends. While those shows are great, Fresh Prince was special, because despite being a sitcom, it portrayed real issues.
That whole "How come he don't want me" exchange still gives me chills. The fact that you can see James Avery breaking as Will is shouting is just heartbreaking. This was something that hit on a personal level, not just the characters.
Vernon Wellington Jr That was a reference to the Leave it to Beaver show. The father's name on that show was Ward and one of the sons name was Beaver. :-)
"white man named WARD." As in Ward Cleaver, the father from the show Leave it to Beaver. It was in response to Will saying Phil should reward them for their honesty because it "worked for The Beave"
I was fortunate enough to have a great father who would do anything for me. I think I speak for everyone who's in that same boat that James Avery played his role perfectly. Always providing and looking out for his family. When he needed to be real with his kids, he was. Wish they still had a show like this on TV.

He was by far the best actor on that show and played that part so perfectly its hard to even to this day believe that isnt really who that man was. That kind of talent is what makes shows like that last forever, Will owes that man a lot. RIP James, you made Uncle Phil for an entire generation.
This was the show that molded me into having the morals and values I have when it comes to discrimination. I dont tolerate it and I thank uncle Phil for teaching me that. If I could go back to childhood and rewatch the whole series like I did i would.

Fuckin right!
Uncle Phil treated Will like his son always addressed him as such. Saved him from trouble and a life of gangs and poverty. GOAT
3:16 "so don't you dare look down your damn nose at me Adebolah!"
He said that with such conviction. Superb and strong acting skills from James.
If every man had the wisdom and convictions of Uncle Phil, the world would be a better place.
so true
exactly
Yeah.
Oh no doubt!
if only.
Uncle Phil’s face when he said Sunday. They way he was holding back tears gets me every time. 😢🥺
First things first Rest in Peace Uncle Phil. For real. Your the only father that I ever knew.

Uncle Phil is not being mean he's trying to protect Will from getting hurt again
For real
Great Episode
That's for sure! Uncle Phil sees himself as Will's dad.
Well that's true he isn't going about that in the best manner possible. However, that's what makes this such a great episode, everyone is acting very real. You can see why they're all behaving the way that they do, and everything works.
Nah, he was too rude.
Scenes like this are why Uncle Phil was such a fantastic character. Expecting accountability but showing absolute forgiveness and support. Very well done.
James Avery was tremendous on The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air and he had some wonderful moments, truly an amazing performer RIP James Avery
Ivan Correa agree With you
James Avery was a great actor. he was the voice of shredder on the ninja turtles cartoon back in the day.
He was
Mark Daly and he voiced the evil robot Santa on Futurama
I can hear the Shredder in him when he gets Mad lol

That hug Uncle Phil gives Will gets me every single time. RIP James Avery, thanks for the memories
I'd say Uncle Phil was more of a father to Will than just an uncle.
Exactly!! Blood does not mean everything. In fact, sometimes it’s meaningless. Case and point, Uncle Phil vs Will’s dad.
And you'd be right
Well. Yeah. Obviously 😉
Without a doubt. 😊❤️
That’s what uncles are for. When the status quo shatters under its own weight.
"I am sorry that everybody cant be as perfect as you, uncle Phil"
RIP, James Avery...nobody will be as perfect as him...
I don't care what anyone says. Uncle Phil was a great father, uncle, and role model. The character is the embodiment of a leader who spawns greatness.
RIP James Avery.
Love the way uncle Phil shouts and disciplines his kids 👏🏽👏🏽
Uncle Phil worked very hard to be "perfect". He's the best.
Ans he's still far from it
No one in this world is perfect
The best thing about his parenting was that he showed his kids that he WASN'T perfect. He never shied away from it.
We all needed an Uncle Phil in our lives.
"DO I LOOK LIKE A WHITE GUY NAMED WARD??!!" LMAOOOO! *DEAD*

Jesus... its been 10 years since we lost James Avery already.....
Agreed.
He ain't gone. Part of him will always live in our values. When we love with what he showed us he is there.
I love how well James portrayed Uncle Phil, especially when he gets very passionate or angry
One of the few men that is a PERFECT role model for all young men and boys.
Don't devalue him by saying he's perfect. The whole point of Uncle Phil is that he's a man that is not a superhero but a REAL man who has made mistakes and learned from them to pass it down to his children.
@@kendallrivers1119 I did not say he was perfect, I said he was a perfect role model. Huge different. ;)
And we need him more than ever in 2022! This generation has no idea what true manners and decorum look like!

@@windmagelita I just hope I can be half the father his character was.
@Joseph Ski the fact that you want to be a good father , it’s a great start. I’m sure you will be a wonderful father.
When hugged will he told him "that's damn good acting " and yes you can hear Hilary crying off set

The scene where Will tell Phil, "You're not my father" proves James Avery was a hell of an actor. You can see the hurt in his eyes when Will said it.
Same goes with the power of the immediate hug he gave Will at the end of the episode. You can't fake emotion like that.

I was fortunate enough to have a great father who would do anything for me. I think I speak for everyone who's in that same boat that James Avery played his role perfectly. Always providing and looking out for his family. When he needed to be real with his kids, he was. Wish they still had a show like this on TV.
"people open doors for me, I work hard to open doors for you. It doesn't make you any less of a man to walk through them" ... Thank you uncle Phil for these words.... I've often felt imposter syndrome over the course of my achievements and I always try to remember these words whenever I do

it's acting like this that causes actors to get literally so into the moment they'll start reacting as if it's really happening to them. bravo.

It wasnt Will Smith that made Fresh Prince so incredibly popular, it was Uncle Phil (James). He was by far the best actor on that show and played that part so perfectly its hard to even to this day believe that isnt really who that man was. That kind of talent is what makes shows like that last forever, Will owes that man a lot. RIP James, you made Uncle Phil for an entire generation.
