  • If you're considering doing your first scramble, check out my 5 beginner tips. This isn't a complete list, but I didn't know most of this stuff when I started - In fact, I didn't even know what scrambling was back then.
    Chapters:
    00:00 Intro
    00:41 Tip 1
    01:18 Tip 2
    02:01 Tip 3
    03:22 Tip 4
    04:30 Tip 5
    05:45 Bonus Tip
    1) Buy a scrambling guidebook (yes there is such a thing) and don't just go up a random ridge or gully, hoping for the best.
I recommend Scrambles in Snowdonia by Steve Ashton (Amazon: amzn.to/44ry2Sa ) but there are other guides for different areas, I particularly like publications by Cicerone (Amazon: amzn.to/3QQt0LM ).
    2) Check the weather - it can take time for rock to dry after rain.
    3) Choose the right footwear. Clunky hiking boots are fine on easy scrambles but not so good on steeper rock where I recommend approach/scrambling footwear.
    4) Check the holds by doing this, it could save your life.
    5) Look for telltale signs you are on the route and not off course - most easy scrambling routes are popular and you can spot the signs that thousands of people have come before you.
Bonus Tip: Know when to quit.
    My Equipment List:
My review of la Sportiva TX4 footwear: • La Sportiva TX4: The U...
Filmed on my GoPro 11: amzn.to/3OBb594
    I use a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone: amzn.to/3R2CiVd
My bag is an Osprey Mutant 38: amzn.to/45ztZ73
I wearing a Black Diamond Half Dome helmet: amzn.to/45wJo8c
    I always carry a packable jacket: amzn.to/45Nx97i

Yes, when I go up to film I now always have a plan b so if the weather isnt on side or if I feel unsafe I'll go and do a wild camp or a hiking route instead so I can still get a video published without putting pressure on myself to do something dangerous just for UA-cam :-)

@thebaldscrambler Very wise! I bailed on a scramble a couple of weeks ago on Glyder Fawr. Really wanted to hit it, but the weather was awful and the rocks were slimey. Didn't fancy turning a great day out into a hospital visit!

Thank you, I've backed off a couple of times but have always come back at some point :-). Did crib lem spur today, cracking grade 1 route in the fog.

There's a couple of challenging lines in that footage! The holds are there though, just a case of keeping my nerves calm, which I don't always do. There's been a few "oh shit" moments. :-).

Do you want it is helpful to do indoor climbing to build skills for outdoor scrambling?

I've never been on an indoor wall, probably not needed for scrambling which isn't that steep.
