    So, I am Icelandic and due to my upbringing I am very much familiar with Norse mythology, and I really liked the fact that Kentaro Miura included Jötnar in Berserk. I am also incredibly grateful for the fact that he did not call them "Frost Giants". Whoever came up with that name was an idiot.
    As far as accuracy goes, the Jötnar as depicted in Berserk are more accurate than the depiction you would likely find in modern video games and Hollywood. But it is worth mentioning that there are many types of Jötnar. Loki was part Jötunn, and the god Skaði ( wife of the sea god Njörður ) was a full-on Jötunn, and she was actually worshipped in Sweden if I remember correctly. So while the Berserk version of Jötnar is fairly accurate to the myths, it would be a mistake to assume that all Jötnar in Norse mythology specifically are big evil half-naked brutes who look like barbarians.

    Best strategy I can think off is using pike and shot formations accompanied by vast numbers of missile cavalry and artillery, but it will be best to not fight in a pitch-battle with this creatures, better to lure them and kill them while they are unorganized, due to their size it will be easy to cut them off supplies and force them to look out for food in the wilderness and villages, forcing them to split up, making then easy prey for ambushing parties

    I must say, when I came across The Griffith army vs the Jotūns for the first time, it felt so bizzare and out of place you know? Then later in Elfhelm it clicked me when the old man said that Griffith is doing things utterly selfishly, not one care in the world about the world itself. These creatures, the Jotūns, they have evil intent alright but what are they being even killed for? They weren't supposed to be here in the first place. Griffith is disrupting the unspoken balance of different worlds..
    I mean sure if I would be a god, or Ryan would be, we could have all the ladies n everything and still take care of the kingdom a fair bit- that's the very normal selfish nature of man since ancient times but this guy... He's the most careless selfish MF I've seen.
    Griffith is a spoilt child god. He thinks the world was made for him to be at the centre of everything. He can use the life and the nature of this world as he pleases.
    He who doesn't give a dam about the world he inhabits should be sentenced with the greatest pain that sustains beyond time. And what greater irony can it be than Guts, a normal human of that very world if becomes the deliverer of that pain to Griffith.

    • @Ash_Wen-li
      @Ash_Wen-li 2 роки тому +7

      I'm pretty sure it's because the entire world has been filled with Astral monsters. All of humanity can't fit in Falconia so Griffith is making it safer for other people to live. It's basically a step in reclaiming the world and it's conquest.
      Of course, he started the entire mess. But what he's doing currently is the logical thing to do and what's best for humanity. At least as far as we can see

    • @s0ulweaver
      @s0ulweaver 2 роки тому +14

      @@Ash_Wen-li I think creating a fantasy by and for oneself and making the entire world work for it is perhaps the most loneliest thing someone could do. Nobody around Griffith knows an iota of truth. And imagine if it were all to crumble down someday with time or space or Guts or whatever, and that realisation will hit Griffith that he has been lonely all along . Since the time he was imprisoned as a man, he has never truly found any closure. He just made it all up so that the world surrounds and works with him at the centre. Awful.
      Obviously the Griffith we knew is long lost to Femto. But if he's in there somewhere, I bet he is crying.
      Well he literally is in 364

      @@s0ulweaver Who’s the old man? And yeah Griffith has always been selfish. I think he remarks this to Guts when him and Zoe’s reunites with Guts on sword hill. He’s like a evil pre-Shippuden Sasuke. He sacrificed for power but in the end couldn’t kill Naruto just scratch his headband.

    The jotuns from Berserk are basically a perfect copy of the norwegian trolls from folklore. They originate from the jotun of old mythology of course, but they've been made alot less regal and intelligent over the years, transformed into dumb monsters in the woods who thirst for christian blood but can be outsmarted by children. The jotun, unlike the trolls, didn't look like monsters, they were just like the gods only usually bigger, but not necissarily that much bigger. They generally outmatched all other types of gods, with only Thor being stronger than them, and even Odin having to parley with them.
    But whats truly interesting to me is the origins of the jotun in Norse Mythology. According to some scandinavian historians the jotun are probably a mythologized idea of a group of seemingly very tall people living in the north of Norway before and at the beginning of the bronze age. They had an impressive diet of seal living far from the northern most norwegian coast, meaning they much have been impressive sea-farers considering they were in the stone age. It is suggested that they had rivalries with the petty kingdoms of southern scandinavia which lead to the ancient myths about the wars between the Aesir gods, the Vanir gods, and the Jotnar.
    Eventually it seems like these tall northerners migrated south at the start of the bronze age because that is when scandinavia started to form centralized power where the bronze weapons were made, which was only in the south because they were the ones trading with the greeks and anatolians for the bronze. This is also the same time when rock carvings depicting huge warriors with horned helmets carring boats appear in the south of Scandinavia. Are they just artistic depictions of powerful people? or are they being literal and just paint big people as big? This would suggest that they painted some people big because those northerners were big. Either way it is interesting knowing their connection with sailing for seal.
    In a way Grunbeld is like the original version of a jotun, just a really big guy, while these jotuns are like the more modern trolls from norwegian folklore, while the things that are actually called trolls in Berserk are like swedish trolls, whom are known to be small and less spooky than the norwegian trolls who are usually depicted as gigantic.

    >Norse mythology is so prevalent, why
    Because Norse people are Germanic.
    English is a Germanic language.
    You are very likely of Germanic ethnic heritage.
    And no Germanic doesn't mean "German" although Germans are, of course, also Germanic.
    Germans, Anglo Saxons, Faroese, Scandinavians, etc (but Finns are special, kind of being a bridge)
    Quite a few Germanic people out there, both existing and historical.
    And that marvel stuff, well, I can't say what I think about that on YT without my post being swallowed by the AI, not due to the swearing, but about who's behind making those movies and slandering the folklore of my (and perhaps our) people.
