  • A string of what would be fatal health issues left Tim Gullikson, Pete Sampras’ coach, in the hospital during Sampras’ 1995 Australian Open run. Feeling the weight of that, Sampras was overcome by emotion during his January 24, 1995 match against Jim Courier, breaking down into tears during the match. This is a story about what happens when life follows us onto the court.

One of the most emotional moments I ever saw in sports --- my respect for Sampras to gather himself and win that match was through the roof

Pete, you have to know now, Jim was being incredibly gracious, kind, compassionate. I truly believe, if you said to him, “yeah, let’s finish this tomorrow”, he would not have skipped a beat. He might even have packed your own rackets up and helped you off court. Jim was being the ultimate sportsman at a time when he did not know the WHAT, but he knew the WHO (you).

I rewatched this match recently on UA-cam…it’s a great match even without that incident, but with it it’s one of the most special matches I’ve seen (been watching since 1988 plus matches dating back to 1980). Another thing about this match is that, two days prior, Sampras had come back from 0-2 set deficit to beat Magnus Larson in five sets, and he had the same 0-2 deficit against Jim, so in a two day span he overcame consecutive 0-2 deficits to win in five (there’s a very good chance that’s never been done before or since). Also, when Jim made the comment, Pete immediately hit an ace. Lastly, Jim-who had fallen off a bit but was making resurgence in his career, played exceptional throughout the match. He actually played as well as Sampras did but just missed big shots at key moments, including a shank overhead on set point. There’s so many great points in this match…absolutely worth a re-watch on UA-cam. The only downside is that the only version available is the Australian telecast…I’d prefer the US telecast with Mary Carrilo because covers the fifth set emotional episode extremely well…so well that I still remember it from 1995.

They left out the part when a fan screamed out to Pete "do it for your coach!" and that's when Pete started breaking down

Jim WAS mocking you, Pete. And you handled it well by kicking his a$$.

Jim wasn't mocking Pete. He was trying to break the tension. He was with Pete having dinner with the coach a couple of nights before the match. So he knew what was going on there, especially after someone in the crowd yelled out come on Pete, do it for your coach!

@@MrZZsharkatrying to break the tension by mocking. Wasn't the first time he mocked Pete in a big match.

@@uncletony6210were you there with them?? Please don’t just say your thoughts like they would be the actuel truth! As for Jim, he is a cool and kind guy. That’s something other players of the time could testify on that.

Your attacks on Jim demonstrate what kind of people you are…and it is not GOOD. I am embarrassed to be human when people write this crap.
