I climbed the castle when I was a wee lad Roger lol.this is my hometown.there was a small church at foot of castlehill.it is now just a ruined floor and a few steps etc.it was destroyed in a tempest in 1670s or thereabouts.in 1910 workmen found an ornate carved gravestone which is very knights templar in style.perhaps it was even Fergus De barclays.it is now in saltcoats museum.excellent video as always.there's a legend that there's a tunnel runs all the way up from the castle to the montfode castle up the top of ardrossan which is now just barely a small scrap of ruin next to the farm.thanks Roger I enjoyed this video.😎👍
You climbed the tower! Brave lad :-) I had a good look at Montfode a few years back - even found a book about the family. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montfode_Castle
Thank you for a detailed video. I played hide and seek there, and football over by the church ruins. I remember on of the gravestones had a skull and crossbones on it.
It's a great pity Wallace's ladder is blocked!!! I once went down with a bright flashlight and I was struck at the advanced way the masonry was cut ,even though the subterranean level at about 25 to 30 feet was clearly much older than the surface. There's another chamber that leads directly under the main tower with a ceiling arch ,that rivals that of the arch in the kitchen . The well is equally is equally impressive! It gentle slopes forward 3 metres to 3 feet below the surface to a landing ,that then does a 45 degree turn to the left and steeply leads down sandstone steps a further 10 feet to a square cut shaft in the floor ,approx 1.5m x1.5 m . Down that shaft is at least another meter drop....But it had been blocked by years of debris!! I did hear a plop when I dropped a stone but it's possible that reaching that point of the tunnel i was under the moat????
Very nice, thank you! As a Montgomery born, I've been to Ardrossan once, and this was a lovely addition to my scant knowledge of it!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Very beautiful! thank you.
A fascinating place
If you went down the side of the hill where the railway line runs .. Look in the long grass and bushes you will find grave stones
Thanks. I forgot that you had mentioned this.
