I remember walking along the seacoast from Stevenston to Saltcoats. The downtown was bustling and everyone was on the pavement shopping. Woolworth's was open then. By 1979, the last time I was back in Scotland it had all changed. The name came from 'salt cots' - as making salt by evaporating sea water was a cottage industry made in private cottage homes at the time. My mother's relatives owned the Station Hotel back then and I had pudding in the big kitchen often, cooked by my granny's sister. I saw Bambi at the Regal when I was a tot. Girls used to come 'round the seats with ice cream and cigarettes. The Glasgow fair every Summer benefitted local industry and that was also gone by the early 1980s. Thank you so much for posting this video. It brings back so many pleasant memories.

Went every Glasgow Fair to Saltcoats, me and the Wife still head down from Glasgow at least twice a year, it always brings back fond memories of better times.

Great to see my hometown when it was thriving. Grew up in Saltcoats and remember the 80s when you couldn't walk through the market it was so busy. When I see it now it's so sad how it's declined and doubt it will ever recover to how it was when I was a kid growing up. Great video.

So sad to see it what it was like to seeing it today, it could be a fab holiday resort if council put money into it, the beaches are lovely and holidayed there this year after 15 years and felt it was so tired, 😢

My late gran was from saltcoats she lived through ww2 born the a wee house where the pharmacy stands in the main street next to where the market was iconically her son (my uncle) delivered to the pharmacy. She use to tell me about great stories from when she lived there also I use to spend a lot of time down there as a kid on holiday with my family to the caravan park I loved it and would love to go back now with my family..

Thank you very much for this video. Didn't know about the windmill at No. 51, though it now seems obvious! There was a third cinema up to 1972, the Countess Picture Theatre (where the town hall now is). I first saw the Wizard of Oz there.

Very well done. I’m an old timer who remembers the Glasgow fair fortnight and the town and beaches a mass of people. Times change and you captured the changes well.

You have made a lovely film. Saltcoats is a hidden gem. More than 100 years ago the Customs House was a kippering store to smoke the fish for the Murrays who owned fish shops in the Three Towns.

Brilliant, thank you. Lived in Ardrossan quite close to the 'planny' and the burn. Spent many a happy day in Saltcoats and my first summer job in a bakery (can't remember the name) which had a back opening onto the braes.

We used to go to Saltcoats every year fro th Paisley fair, rented a place from a Mrs Pendleton.I use to go to a local bakery each morning for a dozen rolls which were then filled with bacon and eggs for breakfast when I got home as we had aunts and uncles living with us.We always brought a wicker hamper filled with food to eke out our money.Loved the place and went out in the local boats,'Spindrift' and 'Santa Maria' from the steps on the harbour, I think it was sixpence a trip and I went out every day I could.Happy carefree days!

Well done and well made.. I kind of remember that we had a big Albion moving van parked in Saltcoats for our family coming from Glasgow for the Fair. 1955 to 1959 then or caravan mysteriously burned down. 😢.

Born and brought up in Saltcoats. Lovely memories in the video. I never realised till I married someone from the east coast that we pronounced street names in a funny way. Windmill St, Dockhead St, Countess St, Bradshaw St - the accent was always on the second syllable. I wonder why?

Thanks so much for such a nostalgic, lovely video. I used to go to Saltcoats as a child with my aunt, and stayed at a B and B, which I always remember had a huge gong in the hallway which was struck to get everyone up in the morning. It was such lovely holidays there, and I remember building sand castles, and playing in the rock pools. Thanks again for such a wonderful video of reminiscing.

My home town. There were 3 not 2 cinemas. The Countess was a wee bit more sophisticated. Regal seemed to show “Sound of Music” all summer every summer! The fair came for the summer every year (not the Glasgow Fair, though that came too, but dodg’ems and waltzer ghost train and all. I blame Thatcher (and to be fair cheap package holidays though I don’t like to let her off the hook for anything). We did moan about the crowds in summer. Little did we know what was ahead for the town once Ardeer shut down.

Well done. It brought back great memories of being brought up In Saltcoats in the 50s and 60s.. I lived in Parkend Road then Dockhead Street but moved away in 1972. Have had the odd day visit to the town in recent years. It's a shame the way the town has gone as it was once a thriving place. The shops were mainly family run: the likes of Duncans, Wilkies and Fullertons where my dad was manager. And I remember having a season ticket for the Saltcoats Bathing Station. Finally, we played football on "The Braes" before the flats were built. Have you any more where that came from?
