GMs reporting low rated players out of suspicion is not bullying. In fact, you are supposed to report if you have a suspicion. However, there have been streamers who would rally their viewers to report their opponent for cheating (for justifiable suspicion of course). That is bullying. The way Danya approaches this topic is very careful, and frankly, this is something that every chess streamer should learn from him.
I'm confused. What is the difference?
@@thesecondderivative8967 The difference between the victim reporting for the damage himself and rallying up 3000 unrelated people to file a report for the things just because they were told to do so?
@@aetbhieiils Ah, I believe I see the problem. If the streamer turns out to be wrong, they just pulled thousands of people into the mess. But if otherwise, and the accusation turns out to be true, I have no sympathy for cheaters.
@@thesecondderivative8967 It is the matter of principle. First, yes, anyone can be wrong, so it is unwise to involve other people. Second, most viewers are low rated, and they themselves do not have the ability to judge a 1900 level move from 3000 Stockfish level move. So they wouldn't be making a judgment by themselves. Third, it is abusing people's sheep mentality.
In a real situation, every report should only count as 1 report. However, when a streamer is involved, that 1 report can easily multiply into 1000s. That is not a fair due process. While this is inevitable, any streamer who rallies up their audience to bring more power to his own report is simply abusing his influence.

@@Ism0Lait3la I think if he was playing OTB with a known GM he wouldn't have. His opponent in this case was supposedly a 1900 so I think he counted on the idea that they wouldn't play 15 top moves in a row.
According to some weaker version of stockfish I used, after Re8 white is winning. Is it just not calculating fully or if not, how does supposedly stockfish get itself into a losing position?

To the untrained player, spotting a cheater in rapid is less obviously, especially if there is a rating disparity in favor of the cheater.
@@piouswhale Absolutely. As a 1300 player, if I faced a 1900 player and he had 96+% accuracy, I'd just think I played terrible and he had the easiest game of his life.
I think people are seeking him out. I virtually never come across cheaters in the 10 min time control. The 15+10 isn't that popular so if you are watching his stream and know he's about to speedrun you have a decent chance of coming across him.
Im around 1600 and everytime I face 1900s in the poll they are usually cheaters. 4 out of 6 1900s ive faced have been cheaters.

Daniel shows how beast is he is going so long with an engine and putting up a good fight. He's busted up Magnus and all the top players. Great player.
I play on lichess and I always use zen mode to hide the rating and everything except for the clock. It's so much easier to have a clear mind when you're not worried about rating
in any competitive chess environment, ur always gonna know the rating of ur opponent. So, I personally don’t see a use in it.
@@jamesontang3218 The use is that it encourages you to play not caring about your opponent's rating when you face competitive chess. why do cricket players lift weight? what is the purpose of any training? it improves something that you use later. secondly, most of us don't even play OTB tournaments.

@@shuvro40 Ok? I also said competitive chess environment which is not exclusive to OTB events. It’s also good practice to know the rating of ur opponent and how u handle it. If rating points are being exchanged, I need to know if the guy im playing is 1200 or 2000. There is already a place in chess for zen mode, tactics. It is a piece of info that is always out there and if ur grinding for online rating, its important too.
The opponent probably played the opening himself, saw that you were outplaying him after he had to retreat the knight, then switched on the engine until he was winning, and finally struggled to convert the position on his own, which reveals his true strength.
You handled the situation gracefully, by the way.

I'm tempted to disagree with statement because the fantasy variation of the Caro-Kann is already kind of rare. Furthermore, e6 is a black response that probably isn't as common as dxe4 followed by e5 which was played by a candidate master against Danya in the speed run a few months ago. If this guy knows theory up to this point in this rare variation, then he is probably very booked up. I don't find the outcome of him being booked up very likely given his rating AND that Danya mentioned that according to chat about 3 months ago some people mentioned that the supposed cheater had a 1100 rating.
I thought this too. Could well be the classic "I only cheat against other cheaters" -case, which is a disease in FPS games. I would be suspicious too if I was outplayed by a player who is 500 points weaker than me (there are no negative ratings though so it's a hypothetical scenario).
@@vesas5214 That is a good point. If you look at Danya's account it looks super sus. It doesn't say it's a GM behind the scenes and this 1400 player is a new account that hasn't lost a game with multiple 90+ accuracy. Danya should state it's him in his profile

Danya forgot how weaker rated players play, and interprets everything as 'theoretical knowledge'. < 1800 players mostly play on their own by move 10 or less, unless you are in a their specific pet variation, and especially if you yourself went to side line. But they can play reasonably good moves over board that parry threats, and move their position along. Which probably have some name attached to them in the theory, which Danya knows as a theory line.
@dmitripogosian5084 yeah I'm 2000 and play the caro. The fantasy is probably the line I know least and definitely don't know this many moves of theory. That's actually why I clicked the video. Thought I'd learn some fantasy lines to close up the blind spot but I'll never remember all of this. Still going to be stuck at 2k.
@@paroxysm6437 Yes and no. If you play reasonable moves not knowing any theory, the line you get after 10 or so moves will have some name attach to it. And looking back it will look as if you following the theory. It is kind of survivor bias after the fact. Most 1800 players do not know many lines to move 15, just a few, and most 1800's are not yet lost straight out of opening. They are quite capable to avoid obvious threats.

I play smash, chess, apex, rocket league, overwatch, a lot of games that have ranks and ladders. Sometimes in rocket league the opponents are way better mechanically, but they crumble after getting scored on. Love how this quote applies to more than chess but just competition in general
this quote is applicable to life and explains why confidence in yourself makes others subconsciously follow your lead.
I remember having to come into decision to attack or to defend when my opponent seems to have a crushing attack when I was playing a game. My logic tells me to attack but my guts tell me to defend. Turns out, attacking was a better option since I was winning decisively, but I pussied out, trusted my guts, and chose to defend instead.
I won the game in the end, but the game should've ended way earlier than it should. I focused way too much on the "what if my opponent succeed in their attack" and choose to calculate those defensive lines instead of the attacking ones.
Alot of strong minded people do not know the rules of chess, you know that right ?😂❤

I recently had some rating points replaced after I played a cheater. It's hard to say who the cheater was since everyone beats me, lol.

@@gelatinousjoe7979: It depends. A couple decades or so, back when things like Yahoo Chess were in their early stages, there was some BLATANT cheating going on some games.
At that time, I could recognize computer play a lot, having written chess programs (as a hobby), etc. When there would be a 5 minute pause, and then suddenly the player started CONSISTENTLY playing like they were THREE rating classes stronger, it really showed. And then if I tried to test them by eliciting comments on WHY thought (for example) a totally drawn opposite colored bishop endgame wasn't drawn, and they'd just say "just move" and never comment on the position (after being chatty early when they were playing bad), it's just TOO blatant.
I'm glad now that at least such cheating can be analyzed and largely caught and punished.
I don't get the motivation anyway. Would winning by taking a baseball bat to your opponent make you feel good? Would beating up a 4 year old on the playground (as an adult) make you feel superior?
At least when I played, it was ALL over the board, and cheating was VERY difficult. (Big tourneys, final rounds, getting advice from a GM for $$$$ was the method most suspected). So at least the results seemed fair.
The only real kind of cheating was being a strong player, pretending to be an unknown/unrated, and stealing a prize that way. They stopped allowing unrateds winning much money to squelch that.
I just wanted to improve. Playing an entire game well (for my level) was its own reward, prize money or not.

You could learn a lot more from learning basic chess theory than pretending the complex calculations inspired by stockfish is really beneficial to your basic understanding of chess fundamentals.

I sometimes struggle to defend against some very strange moves I encounter online (yes, also face cheaters without knowing, cause I usually assume nothing) and it was very useful for me to see the cognitive process Danya (or any advanced player) to solve the defensive problems they pose. I don't play these openings, but I always try to catch a Naroditzky long play lecture, bc there's so much to learn, other than specific openings. Also, it's a pleasure to hear him speak.

It really feels like the 1400-1600 pool has had a lot of cheaters recently. I’ve played on the platform for a while and it seems much worse recently
I'm 2200 and sometimes I'm really impressed by how an opponent crushes me. Then I get really sad when I find out they cheated against me lol. It's funny because sometimes I learn stuff from the cheater games.

22:00 there is a lot of truth about rating and chess. I had a similar experience against an 1800. But I did beat a 1550 when I was 1200 playing in the USCF. And on that game, I did not check the rating. But I did study a lot of theory leading up to that event.
i kinda get the feeling that danyas opponent decided to play a 1400 and got the feeling he was playing against a cheater since instead of having an easy game as expected he got down 2 pawns and kinda blown off the board without making big mistakes which would be highly unlikely. maybe he even used the 8 min he took for the one move to check the game up until that point and saw that danya pretty much played top engine moves himself for the entire game and decided "fuck that, if hes cheating im gonna do the same and not lose rating points". still not rly a justification but maybe an explanation on why he thought he had to cheat.

Yeah I might do the same in those situations, because I feel the 1400 is clearly mocking me (even though it's a bad method and it's better to resign or fight by yourself), but you just check his description and see FrankfurtAirport is not a real 1400.
Plus here he was not trashing the 1900 guy, just a bit better, so that's not a reason.
Then he was probably cheating since the beginning knowing this very rare line of the Fantasy.
I think cheaters very commonly have that attitude - "hey everyone else is cheating too". A lot of people project all kinds of things, especially to justify questionable actions.

As a 2000, it’s scary how many cheaters I’ve faced in the past month. Before then I had maybe 2 confirmed cheaters over the course of 6 years
I noticed that as well. I wonder if the site developers are creating these bot accounts.
@@speedchessbattles4047 Or maybe they changed the cheating algorithm. Maybe they wanted to reduce the number of false positives and the fact that more cheaters are let to roam free is a trade off.
I recently got the feeling that 1300's don't play anymore like 1300's used to play. Games get really hard even at that level. As a result my rating has dropped a lot. I wonder how much of this is due to the increase in cheating.
@@pavlos712 Look for videos of Titled players who stream (Rosen, Gotham, etc) and see how often they run across cheaters. Quite a few are 13-1400)

I love this kind of Speedrun videos, where Danya slowly, but surely realizes who is he playing against, but doesn't tilt until the end of the game, moreover, tries to teach us something.

Yep i always love the long pause and then they hammer out crazy moves. I have called opponents out before and remember one claiming he was using the restroom, another claiming their child was crying etc. However they all started playing not well, then couple minute pause, and then best moves and you get your butt kicked by stockfish.

In my Experience. The 1600-1800 have very absurd moves in openings that I currently play (Rapid 10min format). Where at times I had no idea how to progress.
Just play solid and grind them out, do not try to get advantage from their mistakes unless they are really big imo
I'm 1600-1800 in rapid and I know some theory, but not a lot. When I see a position I'm not familiar with, I just play normal chess, unless I know why the move played was bad in that position.
Gonna be honest Danya, i do see that issue with GMs reporting people a lot; the issue comes when they say "im a GM and i know he is cheating" thats not what you're doing. You're suspicious and then you check the engine, then with evidence you say "ok im going to report so that whoever the authority is can check." Nothing wrong with this at all. More people should follow this example.
I find it fun that a game where the opponent is cheating looked and felt like a competitive game against you, in the end he outplayed you for sure- but it took a long time i feel like. Also great lesson as always.

It's amazing how much compensation one can have because it was simply not the engine move to capture the 3 pawns.

ANYONE whos ever watched danyas speed runs, suspicious games etc, KNOWS he takes the matter with the utmost seriousness and respects the process, no1 who know him, his love for the game, his respect for the game ad its players professional or not coukd ever possibly think he would report someone without more than just suspicion, he takes every measure reasonably possible before reporting people, so danya, if you see this, dont think u ever have to explain your reasons for reporting and essentially ask your audience not to be upset with you for reporting someone, your one of thee most respected people in chess and most respectable as well👍

It's kind of crazy how many people may be cheating like this.
Danya could spot it because he's a GM and knows a lot of the theory by heart. But for a pleb like me, I get my ass handed to me sometimes and I have no way of knowing if someone is cheating unless they're egregious about it and have an accuracy rating of like 99+ for a lot of games.
Kind of takes the fun out of it when people cheat.

If you see the 4 bars that represent the internet connection near the opponent's name, you can see that it constantly switches from 2 bars to 4. It switches to 4 bars just before the other guy plays his move. Hmmm......🤨 {EDIT}Timestamps (just a few): 18:21, 18:41 or so.
Lots of good advice in this video. My rating shot up when I learnt to play what was on the board, not the opponent, or what was on the board a couple of moves ago. BTW black's play did not seem like a sub 2000 online player.
Played a 2200 5 times the other day. I’m only 2000. He was absolutely carving me up, making crazy sacrifices and such. Pop on the engine and he made 1-3 best move every time until the end. I reported him and he was banned. Shame.

Pure scumbags. I feel like cheating has become even more of a problem since the recent boom in online chess. His account has been banned and a new account with a very similar name was created the day after his account was closed. I've just reported that one too, as many games have been won with high accuracy and very engine-like moves in the middlegames.

Yes it's true. Think about the colour the knight is on for each move it makes.
Knights have to land on precise squares at precise moves when calculating because of their non-linear nature. They basically have to be at the right place at the right time, everytime. You can't afford to waste knight moves a lot of times.
Oh, and for resources just study any knight endings, so any good intermediate to advanced endgame books is fine.

it’s even more fun to have friends your level, I have a friend who is 700 and I’m 1500 so I just win every time

@@CalebJCourtney Computer's can't play "well", as that implies a spectrum of possible moves and mistakes based on best play. Computers are algorithms.
@@xeanthomas5231 some algorithms work better than others, so there’s obviously a spectrum. They may not play like a human, but what you are saying boils down to “they play almost perfectly, therefore they don’t play well”, which is kind of a nonsense thing to say, mate. 🤷♂️

at first i thought they were stream sniping. the one time they had a really long think was after Danya was a little unclear on what his opponent would do
The difference between engine cheaters and stream snipers is that stream snipers are not able to pull brilliant moves out of their a** that even Danya didn't consider. There had been multiple occasions where Danya's mind was blown by how all the moves just "worked out" in favor of the cheater. That's how you know it's an engine cheater.
Hey danya I was wondering what your recommendation is vs the accelerated dragon as white. Hopefully we get to see it in the speedrun thank you for the awesome content
In previous speed runs he's been playing the Smith Morra, which sidesteps or undermines the dragon setup when played well. Otherwise, I think he's an Alapin proponent.
What does rook e1 change about queen takes g7? Well, 2 attackers on e6, and also then later on other lines are different so its a cool move really

@@aidensanders5506 wrong. every low elo player he plays against is being cheated. he is pretending to be their same elo and smsahing them. to a 1900 player there is 0 difference between playing a GM and playing an engine.

also - cheating with approval is still cheating. every player he beats and makes lose rating points got cheated.
at 13:45 white queen takes pawn at F7, for black instead of rook to E8, black could have taken pawn at G2 check. If king takes, then black plays rook to g8 check. If king steps back into corner then pawn to c5 check, white blocks with pawn at d5. Black pawn at e6 takes d5 threatening to advance one square with a check leading to mate (?). so white pawn at c4 takes d5. Black bishop takes d5 attacking queen and checking the king.

Not justifying the cheater but when you're unknowingly playing Danya who is rated as 1200 you're probably thinking that person is cheating and maybe that tempts the other person to cheat if they're desperate not to lose etc. Great game though and always so instructive O thanks Danya. Keep the videos coming they have improved my game loads!
Yeah it's perfectly logical for his opponent to think he's cheating. As much as I love watching the speedrun the whole idea is kind of messed up. For somebody new to chess like me, if I put in a lot of work to get my rating up to 1500 just to get paired with another 1500 that happens to be a GM that blows me off the board it wouldn't feel very good. Pretending your rating is much lower than it is just to play people at a much lower rating could be considered a form of cheating as well.

I actually play way better when I'm against better players, and a lot worse against people worse than me. I think that's mostly in slower positional games, though.

Question for whoever: @49:08, Daniel called Rde8 a strange move, but it's a move I think I would've played to protect my pawn. I'm only 500 right now (I know rating isn't everything), but I don't see why it's a strange move?
Same with the queenside castling thing, ain't no way I'm castling kingside with his queen and knight over there and good bishops with clear diagonals to that side. Maybe I wouldn't castle at all, but with all my pawns over there and only being pushed once, I would feel safe about queenside castling. So what makes it a high level move at Daniel called it? (Or maybe I'm confusing "high level" with higher ELO)
yeah, same thing for me. Would've been one of my most natural moves. Right after attacking the queen outright, one learns that she'll just move away so you instead protect the next pawn and hope to trap her.
It wasn't just the castleing... it was the ridiculous sequence of moves this 1900 found....1900s are strong yes but not strong enough to convincingly beat a grandmaster like that

I mean cheating is bad and there are notorious cheaters out there. However, smurfing and speedrunning etc. must be extremely frustrating for the other side as well. I imagine he feels like he is playing against a cheater as well. I think at least for some people, if they knew they were playing a GM, they wouldn't cheat but be excited about it but if its just a random online account, then these games must feel frustrating.
I totally agree. That long pawn calculation may have been him working through all the possible continuations, but more likely it was "oh no I'm getting beat by a 1400 who is clearly not playing at 1400, I'm firing up my engine"
After Knight to D2 (27:30), can someone please explain why Pawn C3 was not considered? Disconnecting the Queen and the Knight; tried calculating and it seemed to work out so was wondering what I'm missing.
