Luke starts off as an idiot than slowly grows into one of the most generous remorseful and dutiful people in all of video game history tales of the abyss is a masterpiece a work of art that is unparalleled by most
To be fair, a lot of Luke's early behavior is understandable. He's been forbidden to leave the mansion, has had to cram 17 years worth of education into 7 (cutting corners wherever they could), and has never known a life without people waiting on him hand and foot. I do appreciate that even early on you see glimpses of his kinder side peek through but he's too embarrassed to show it openly. That being said, yes, I absolutely agree that he's an utterly fantastic character, easily my favorite in the franchise.
I really like it on one hand, the part where he got humbled by the fact that he isn't as high as he thought himself to be, a mere replica. How everyone else slowly turns their back on him, making him realize, or rather, accept the consequences of his actions. On the other hand, I like it more how amidst his most trying moments, he finally sees value in the individuals whose feelings he once neglected and ignored. It's the satisfying feeling of trust, a consolation in this drowning isolation, and a hope for a possible redemption. his entire journey towards the end starts of as a path of redemption but ends up being a search for the meaning for his birth.
Thank you for giving your thoughts about Luke Fon Fabre. His character proves that even if he’s a Replica, he still has a place to live in a world who rejects him. Luke may be disliked by some gamers, but his character development throughout the game made me love him more. Especially how he was able to find meaning of his birth and how he wanted to live.
Yes and no considering how replication works in tales of the abyss. Replicas can go through a rapid mental growth development .There are two factors, imo - he did come into the world as a completely blank slate, like a baby, but on the other hand, the brain he was replicated from had ten years of development. A newborn's brain works much differently than a ten year old's. So my best guess is that he's neither mentally 17 nor mentally 7, but some mix of both.
a lot of realistic characters in video games and anime are often hated in their western fandoms compared in contrast to the Japanese fandom, who usually like the more realistic characters. For instance, Yukari Takeba from Persona 3 is quite possibly one of the most hated, if not the most hated, characters in for the western Persona fandom. Many of the fans hated how she's a bit of a "tsundere bitch." Of course, The Answer made her even more hated. However, in Japan, she's actually pretty popular. To the extent she's Shigenori Soejima's second favorite character in all SMT/Persona. Alisa Reinford from Trails of Cold Steel isn't quite as hated, but she is a very polarizing character in the west because she seems "forced" to be Rean's love interest in a game where choice plays such a huge role. In Japan, she's in the top 5 most popular characters in the Kiseki/Trails series. Even in the Tales series, there are characters actively despised in the west, such as Cheria Barnes from Tales of Graces, Emil Castagnier from Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World, Rita Mordio from Tales of Vesperia, and, yes, Luke from Tales of the Abyss, that are actually extremely popular in Japan.
@@GiordanDiodato It is because the players in the west relate to them, that they are hated. If there is one thing I've noticed about the majority of those who hate these characters, is that they have more in common with those characters than they're consciously aware of, than they are willing to admit. But where most of the Japanese audience don't suffer from such insecurity, those in the west very much do, which reveals a more tragic story than simple narrative disdain.
It's true. Luke is written in such a way as to make him incredibly relatable and sympathetic. Also, can we take a minute to appreciate the fact that his parents still love him unconditionally even after they learn he's a replica? That made me so, unbelievably happy.
In all honesty, many may not agree with my opinion but I think Luke from Fabre is my most favorite video game character of all time. It's like you said, he starts out as entitled idiot who only paid attention to only himself but after the horrible accident he caused he starts his journey of redemption and change for better person and also find his own place in the world. I feel like a relate and feel personal connection with Luke than with any other character. Luke is possible the most redeemable and relatable with the strongest character arc I've ever seen in JRPG. Amazing analysis video on my favourite character.
Luke annoyed me to no end and I felt nothing after he "Tries to redeem himself," because I just gave up. He was too much of an insufferable asshat for me to feel any sort of sympathy.
Fundamental misunderstanding of Luke's character. You're SUPPOSED to hate him at first. But that's what makes his arc truly spectacular! Epic fail WatchMojo, you absolutely did NOT do your research, and it shows. Due diligence, next time, OK?

Crazy that the ending brought tears into my eyes? One of my Top 5 JRPGs of all time! Played on PS2 and 3DS... Also seeing scenes from the game translated into Anime is awesome. Got interested again with the Tales series while playing Crestoria. Luke was an unlikeable character until near mid-game. In the beginning, he was so sheltered that he lacks common sense and basic understanding of the outside world - stifled by all those around him. After the fall of Akzeriuth, he was remorseful and tries his best to make up for his mistakes not for forgiveness, but because it is his repentance. Also, when you put it in perspective, Luke is only physically a teen, but would be mentally and emotionally 7-8 years old. It's messed up.

If memory serves me right. It's from a magazine a long time ago in Japan. But I doubt that was the case. The creators left it open for players to give their thoughts of who the character was. A lot of people believed that it was Luke in Asch's body or Asch acquiring Luke's memories. It was left ambiguous. But judging by the cutscenes and symbolisms, it makes sense as to who that was.
@@tenkyu778 I remember back while searching for sources regarding this fact, it came from a gaming magazine in Japan about Asch coming back instead of Luke. However, this is more of an opinion from someone who played the game than a fact that was given by the creators. The fact that the creators did say that the ending was left ambiguous just shows that anyone can see who that person was exiting Hod. But looking back at the game, understanding the characters, and knowing the themes and symbolisms this game shows, it's obvious who that character is.

Maybe because Luke was such a whiny, intolerable douche, and that made most players quit. I, for one, found his development very mismanaged and forced. Like, NOW I'm supposed to feel sorry for him, because he nuked an entire town? When he tried being "Nice," he was too much of a pussy. His character was too inconsistent to be believable.
As much as I disagree with your opinion, I kinda blame the game’s inconsistent writing as a whole. The whole first part of the game was spent with Luke basically being coddled by the party when he was the most insufferable piece of trash, but when he genuinely wanted to do good for the first time he just gets ripped by those same people. While I do admit he at least tried to be better, he never really got much better imo.
I personally wished Asch was the protagonist instead of Luke. Luke was without a doubt the worst part of the game. I stopped playing after the mining town nuke, because of how pathetic he was. He really ruined the game for me.@@tatlxtael2303

Best tales of and best character, luke is amazing (watchmojo=shit)
no
Watchmojo is prolly a Yuri fangay.
The only protags I honestly liked were Guy and Natalia. And yet the antagonists all felt so superbly written I found myself wanting to root for them.
I personally wished Asch was the protagonist instead of Luke. Luke was without a doubt the worst part of the game. I stopped playing after the mining town nuke, because of how pathetic he was. He really ruined the game for me.@@tatlxtael2303
