This piece may very well be one of the best piano solos Joplin ever wrote, right alongside Magnetic Rag, Maple Leaf Rag, Eugenia, etc. Your interpretation of it does it great respect, good job!!!
Check out John Arpin’s album of Joplin. He’s also a jazz pianist. Has a unique way of playing. “Sugarcane” is the name of the song in his instead of Gladiolus. I can’t figure out what the true titles are for several of them. I guess people mix them up or disagree on it.
Kristen I'm so glad you played Gladiolus Rag. It was a joy to hear you play that. I love to play it too but cannot play as well as you can. I always look forward to your next performance. Thank you so much for posting such wonderful tunes. X
It is just so nice that this old time ragtime music is still being played in modern days. Always great to watch and listen to you playing this great music in such an impressive way. Thank you for sharing your love for this music with us
That smile is well worth the wait when she does it. My favorite on YT. I was born to late, I missed all this great music. Thankfully, this young lady brings it back. ❤
Hi Kristen, I've played a few Scott Joplin rags over the years, and, like you, I'm sure, I have found that memorizing them makes them easier to play so you can focus on all the left-hand "jumps" especially, and not have to worry about turning pages. Nice job!! 😊
A beautiful performance. I have to say, it's interesting to hear this song at so fast and bouncy a rhythm; I'm more used to hearing it almost as an epilogue to "Bethena", continuing on from that piece in a similarly slow, almost somber or melancholy tone. This performance is quite the change.
Recordings from Joplin's lifetime go much faster than this. Check out the recording of "Gladiolus" made by the Pathe Dance Orchestra in 1914 elsewhere on UA-cam.
Beauty and talent is a very rare combination but have it in spades, and all topped by that gorgeous smile a such a great achievment. You lfift my soul make my day every time I listen. Thank you. Rob
That's because Kristen heeds the directions of the composer: "Do not play this piece fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast." (Note from the composer included in many of the rags Stark published for Joplin.)
This is one of my absolute favorite Joplin rags, and you play it so well. I was wondering when you would tackle this particular tune! been anticipating this one for year and was so thrilled to find out that this video was uploaded just an hour ago! I particularly love the 3rd and 4th part. Has a really happy upbeat feel to it! :)
BRAVO! Definitely a thumbs up! Haven’t been to your channel in several years and here you are all grown up and playing exquisitely. Nice to see you’re doing well. Syncopation is more confident and your style comes through. Very happy for you.
Fantastic Kristen - well done, a tricky rag to master, especially sections 3 & 4. Quite a lot of that rag was used in "The Sting" movie as well. One of my favourite SJ rags along with Magnetic & MLR !
Beautiful playing i love to see young people playing the piano i didnt any people knew what a piano was any more let play it so well bless you my little friend keep posting
Great performance! You have always been such a great inspiration to me as a hobby pianist, I found your channel when I was much younger and started trying to play rags. Thank you!
Kristen, I was delighted to see you chose Gladiolus Rag. It is my favorite to play, going back to the 1970s and early 1980s when I began playing Scott Joplin on the piano (in the years after "The Sting" came out in 1973) . This song, in particular, I chose as part of a writing assignment in college at that time, (audio) recording it and writing about how I was feeling as I moved through each section. Too bad you weren't in my class back then. I use more foot pedal in all sections, the way Joshua Rifkin does, though. I gave you a thumbs up after you finished playing, too!
Absolutely Phenomenal!!! Bravo!! I don't know how you do it. It was a flawless performance and it sounded wonderful. I am a new student to the baritone and tenor ukulele and in my late 50's and I practice for a few hours every single day, and even with practicing and focusing on small sections of a song and playing it everyday over many months I make frequent errors. I own a piano and play on that a few times a week and I am just amazed at how your hands hit the exact keys your wanting to hit while moving at supersonic speed and without a single wrong note. Your talent is mind boggling.
Fantastic! This was always my favourite Joplin rag when I was younger - probably still is actually. I always struggled with those last few bars though - the unusual key modulation - for some reason.
Still my best, though I love your total Joplin opus. You're the tops. Would have loved to see you live but as an old codger, I never will. But as long as I have the internet and my old laptop to see your performances I am a happy old odger! Lol Thanks for your talent, joy you give and smile! Roby

Have you heard Bethena?
Thank you for opening my eyes (and ears) to all the excellent works of Scott Joplin.

Love Scott Joplin. I used to play a few of his tunes a long, long time ago. Never heard this one before. Wonderful! 👏👏👏
Very nice performance.
I've been waiting for her next video to long, but it was worth it. Love her talent, with a beautiful smile. ❤
That smile is well worth the wait when she does it. My favorite on YT. I was born to late, I missed all this great music. Thankfully, this young lady brings it back. ❤
I was having such a bad day-and then I found this. This really turned things around. Thanks so much, Kristen.

Nicely done Kristen!
I really like how you bring these pieces back to life.
Listening to ragtime is one thing but seeing it played is eye opening. You are so talented. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
Midnight and listening to the best ragtime piano. What could be better? Sleep?? Nah.

I love this song!!! Wait. I say that about everything you play…but I really love this song!! 😊

BRAVO! Definitely a thumbs up! Haven’t been to your channel in several years and here you are all grown up and playing exquisitely. Nice to see you’re doing well. Syncopation is more confident and your style comes through. Very happy for you.
Großartig, Kristen Mosca! Scott Joplin hat seinen Gladiolus Rag sicher genau so gemeint. Er wäre stolz auf dich gewesen.
Very nice! I never had the dedication to learn anything past the A section on this one haha
Fantastic Kristen - well done, a tricky rag to master, especially sections 3 & 4. Quite a lot of that rag was used in "The Sting" movie as well. One of my favourite SJ rags along with Magnetic & MLR !

I thought that was great, and I love how you really can hear the left and right hand parts quite clearly
Awesome job!
