How refreshing to see someone so young playing the classic rags. Wow
Macgiver474 Iv played all rag song on piano and i really like theme. I'm only 14 and iv liked theme sense 12
charky it fun
Calm down English might not be his/her first language
If ragtime speaks to you, and you have the talent, this delightful result is what you get when you play it!
@@charky6683 What is actually wrong with you lmao
JOPLIN composed many amazing Rag time pieces that continue to amaze and dazzle us long after he is gone. RIP Mr JOPLIN. You were truly an amazing composer.
I'd never heard this one before! Positively delightful!!
Sure is!
Charles Hand
Superb.. I was expecting her to break into The "I'm a Salty Dog" Blues.

Omggggg Snow White is playing for the dwarfs !!!!! So cute !!!
Nice to hear Scott Joplin played so wonderfully well. He is one of the great American composers who deserves so much more attention. Thank you for such an enjoyable hearing! 🤗
I agree, I feel some of his phrases rival Chopin waltzes and a little bit of Beethoven ( blasphemy?).
* sigh *. 42 years ago I met and fell in love with a music major who played Scott Joplin at the campus student center. We've been married 40 years. Best wishes for you.
@@thememeteam7585 90 beats per minute ..??
Awww. Look it's one thing to play the notes, but she has the VIBE DOWN!! This lady is spunky!! Fabulous job sister!!
The dog is like this shit goooood, needed a closer seat haha! Amazing playing
Imagine having someone in your home who could do that! Even the little dog wanted to get closer to the joy.
A beautiful talented young lady you deserve a million views.
¡Excelente!
SIMP!
No it doesn't.
U are creepy tho
@@ubermenschexplorer4910 I feel like when you're his age, the idea of simping no longer applies.
I love your energy in performing this piece....great job!!
(and the dog coming to sit down next to the piano.... priceless.😄)
That dog appreciates good music!
😂😂😂😂
Understand that ragtime is a precursor to blues and jazz and was not intended to be played too fast. It’s a thing of emotional expression and experiences.
If you think this is too fast you need some new ears. 😭
@joedimarzo9891 It is all relative, man. If you're starting out, learning to play piano, then this might be pretty tricky and fast paced even if it is mid tempo
@@candideggplant1575i hear that. There’s nothing wrong with learning any piece at a tempo that’s comfortable to play.
I only really take issue with other musicians enforcing their interpretation like it’s the law. It really bugs me when I see people saying “This is too fast” “too slow” etc. IMO people should be able to play the music in whatever fashion they enjoy without these couch-bound musicians giving their unwanted opinions.
@@joedimarzo9891 Joplin despised playing rags fast. Ragtime in itself came from a "march" sort-of tempo, which is usually slower. Also, He often wrote "Not too fast" as the tempo mark on most of his pieces. The only pieces that lack the "not too fast" tempo mark are fast rags such as the Maple leaf rag, and so on.
@@kychu1445I see what you mean but I honestly believe that Joplin still would have enjoyed this rendition. He most likely only wrote “not too fast” on his scores to dissuade people from playing them at breakneck speeds. At the end of the day as long as the piece is well played with careful consideration for the tempo, I believe it should be up to the musicians interpretation.
I honestly feel that many people overstate that sentiment of “well the composer says it’s too fast, etc.” nowadays. Honestly, who cares? It’s not like Joplin is gonna come back from the dead and strangle you for playing his rags 5 bpm too fast. As long as the performance is well executed, I see nothing wrong with changing the tempo to better suit your own interpretation.
There’s no rules, and no laws in music. Maybe it’s my bias as a jazz musician, but that is the thing I love most about it. You and I can like completely different things, and still get tons out of it. I say enjoy music however you want, even if someone else tells you it’s wrong. If you like it, that’s good enough.
I loved the way she played this. It's amazing how she played this so well, I laughed when that cute little doggie jumped up on her piano bench.
Excellent syncopations with great pop to them! Also a perky, stomping left hand with authority, and never drags or jumps a 16th note, which is easy to fudge in bar 8 of the D section. Top notch! Keep it up!
Did not miss a beat, even when the Dog joined her! :-)
exactly right!
John I couldn't agree more. A simple thumbs-up to your accurate observation was not enough.
Guess you could call it "Elite Syncopations".
I’ve just started learning the Maple Leaf Rag and came across your channel. After watching you play I’m determined to roll up my sleeves and learn the whole damn book!
I’m so close to finishing maple leaf rag, peacherine will be next
Interventer You should really try to memorize music, i mean it’s not like you’re gonna carry sheet music or something wherever you go.
I learned all joplins tunes with a flatpick and guitar 20 years ago
I've been playing ragtime piano, the Midwestern variety (Joplin, Scott, and Lamb), forever. It's fascinating to learn and to play. When I'm asked for a suggestion to start learning to play rags, I always tell the person, "never let your left hand know what your right hand is doing." People look at me funny, but I'm convinced it's the only way to get started.
@@user-xd4sk4pk7h omg same, took me months for maple leaf rag and I'm still not done.
The dog even enjoyed it! 🐶
Omg -your passion for ragtime is priceless. It just made a tear stream down my face. I'm at a loss for words. I'm so happy you're sharing-thank you. I can't believe that the world of ragtime in which I was solitarily enveloped as a child is now so vast thanks to the Internet. It's so hard to explain. Too much awesomeness. 👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
i agree
Nice! The sound of the early 1900's. Good job with that stride left hand!!
I don't know what a "stride" left hand does. (Of course, I can't play any musical instrument.)
@@jayhershey7525 stride as in how fast she’s switching between the lower keys and octaves
@@michaelbrown2779 Thank you.
@Gwyn Willeto that’s not nice hacking your friend
GOOD music never goes out of style nor grace! She is wonderful by the way!
Even Grumpy smiles listening to such fun music!
I love the fact that there are young people out there playing this music. After all, it's not just meant for the old people. This was composed and meant for young people to enjoy back then! Today marks the 100th anniversary of the death of the king of ragtime, scott joplin and it lights up my face to see so much fun and power here. keeping the music going. go kristen! :)
im 15 and love it
Awesome job Kristen! Anyone who has played Mr. Joplin's works KNOWS how difficult it is. The left hand is not syncopated and the right hand is..... And I love that your puppy is enjoying it as well! I've been playing since I was a little girl sitting on the piano bench next to my grandfather - and I'm 75!
Very nicely played - nice tempo & execution.
How wonderful this young lady playes this great Music. This takes Talent that isn't easy to come by now days.
I cannot get over how GOOD this part sounds at 1:35
Sounds similar to a part in maple leaf rag. Wonder which one was composed first
That dog's twitching ears indicate a fine critical appreciation of musical skill. Love the tough brio attack, crisp and even.
This rendition is sooo good!
Wow. We use go to my grandma's in the 80's when she was 80 ish every sunday morning for a coffee and she would play the piano for us kids we loved it.
Just watching your hands brings back memories of them days .many thanks keep up the good playing. X
This week I learned from Kristen that ragtime pieces are my coronavirus jams. Rockin' the quarantine! & sharing now ;)
My DAD had the YAMAHA FRANCHISE for NE OHIO in the 70'2...Delivered MANY Yamaha spinet AND grands !! THANK YOU SOOOOO much for teh MEMORIES !! XOXO
Young lady, that was very impressive! Bravo to you. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing you magnificent talent.
Simp
Such a talented young lady. Note perfect as far as I care. You seem to feel the music. Love how the puppy joined in :) Very well played!
That sure was fun to hear and see! That Ragtime has your hands pretty busy! I love the special effect of the dog jumping on the bench halfway through, better than any of the CGI effects coming out of Hollywood these days ☺️
EXCELLENT!! It would be a real tragedy if this Beautiful Young Lady is not making it big in the future of the music industry soon. More entertainers like Her are needed.
Well done! Its so nice to see young people playing classic older music like this. Seeing this gives me hope that ragtime might survive another 100 years if we take care to try and interest the next generation in it. I might suggest slowing down the tempo though. Scott Joplin himself said rags should never be played too fast and that was certainly played faster than is typical for rag time.
P.S: I think one of your dwarves is missing (or perhaps just not in the shot, I dunno. )
Don't worry the only piano music I like to play is ragtime as well
It's 6 dwarves and a nose! One of them is almost entirely hidden behind another. Very nice set! (And I like the music too.)
Your head and hands are fine. Try it with your ears and heart.
So much energy in your playing!! I think Joplin would have loved it!
You play this so well! Brightened up my day 🌞😊
You never cease to amaze me! I took piano in the 3rd grade back in 1960, and if music this joyous had been part of it, I would have continued.
Were Scott Joplin's songs frowned upon back then? Or why didn't they teach them then?
Thank you!
I have found your (very good) renditions of some of the rags in my book, to be helpful for deciding which one I will start on next (after I have got a bit better at my current ones).
I think I have settled on this one, Peacherine.
Classic performance. Never gets old.
Hey Kristen- That was FANTASTIC! You played it JUST LIKE SCOTT would have. You really captured the FEEL of Scott Joplin, and that's the hardest part. Somewhere in the universe Scott has a BIG SMILE on his face put there by YOU! A+++++++A+++++++
I like this kind of lively, cheerful music. The little girl can sure tickle the ivories!
Something jolly to listen to before I go to work! Fabulous playing! I love ragtime music!
I never get tired of ragtime. What does drive me crazy is when people think it's cool to speed up to show how fast they can play it. It stops being enjoyable . Well done.
I like how the dog just jumps up out of nowhere like a boss!
Be still my still my beating heart!!! I can sit and listen for hours!!! Her playing gives me PURE JOY!!!
Muito bom!
Parabéns pelo talento.
Scott Joplin continuará eterno graças a pessoas como você.
Ragtime is such a happy music.. you do such a great job with it. Please don't stop, you are so talented and the world needs real talent now days.
nice piano and great skill
Energizing music! So much talent!!!! Thank you!
I’m nine years old and I love ❤️ Scott joplin
I'm 14 and love Scott Joplin lol. Nice to see other people so young who do too. He's a really underrated composer these days and still doesn't get the respect he deserves
I was 13 when "The Sting" movie came out with a delicious selection of Scott Joplin tunes. Two years later I got to see Max Morath live in Cripple Creek Colorado playing a wider array. Great art spans generations, I'm glad you enjoy it!

Great performance, well done, a pleasure to listen to! :D
The rags are unique because they are awesome. Thank you, Mr. Joplin, as well as your predecessors.
Brilliant as always.
I am old and have seen and heard lots of things but.........I cannot get over how God gifts some people with such talent......no one can practice enought to play like you. Its just like some athelics that are simply gifted with talent. I am not a jealous person but the beautiful human makes me jealous. THANK FOR SHARING YOUR TALENT WITH US.......back in the 1900 hundreds you could have easily gotten a job anywhere.
Beautifully played Kristin. Im impressed 👍👍👍😘
Velocity and accuracity are exellent.

Scott Joplin makes me feel a certain kind of way!! Amazing American !
A wonderfully lively playing of one of my favorite songs. Hugs
She really make the music jump! Excellent!
This is amazing!! I also play piano. I am not a pro, but I have learned Maple Leaf Rag, Magnetic Rag, and some other rags. Overall, great job!! I am 12, and learning to play this song next. Thanks for the inspiration!

My goodness ,you certainly know how to play Mr Joplin`s music well...Its a pleasure to listen to you play it .
Maple Leaf and Peacherine are by far my top favourites of Joplin's rags. And you freakin nailed the Peacherine with this performance! :)
Bonus points for having a doggie that likes rags, too! :)
I love how how her buddy shows up at 1:40 and just sits there listening. Well done young lady, you have a real talent for making feet tap.
I'm listening from France, so keep going :) Believe me, French people love "Ragtime"...
My grandparents had a foot-pumped pneumatically operated player piano with many piano rolls of Scott Joplin rags. As a kid I always wondered what it would look like to see someone actually play one of these complicated pieces. Now I know, and it was superb! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Why is there only 6 of the 7 dwarfs? Are you one of the dwarfs?
+Joe Palmer There's 7, I promise! 😜
+Kristen Mosca Must make you Snow White then
+Joe Palmer there are seven count them (one is hiding behind another)
+Littlemoon48 Nope, still only see 6 midgets

My Lord, that was so dope! Although the dogs not impressed lol
Ned's Head Nope. I was so surprised that he climbed up the chair. Must be better than a cat
Why would he be impressed. He been hearing good ragtime music all his life. Just waiting for his next treat like every other dog.
No wonder Happy has a grin ear to ear and Toto wanted to join in too. Priceless. A real toe tapper! Solid performance Kristen. Well done.👏🏻
How can anyone dislike this?
Joseph, I would ask the same question. Sadly, there are people who love to press the dislike button. Personally I put this down to a warped and hostile attitude to the world in general. If you gave them a million pounds they would still down-thumb you.
Very very nice! Peacherine was the second rag that I learned (first was Maple Leaf) I have not yet been able to attain the control and smoothness of the left hand - even though i have an octave span - thank you for this performance.
Im doing it the other way around. This one is my first and I’ll soon start learning maple leaf. Which one would you say is more difficult?
I've learned and memorized both. I'd say that the Maple Leaf is still harder simply because of the trio (third section) in that rag; The jumps in the LH and the fingering in the RH can be really frustrating to coordinate together sometimes, even though I learned it 2+ years ago. Peacherine on the other hand is pretty smooth all the way through, and has certain undeniable bounce to it that can't be hated :)
That was great! But which one of the seven dwarfs is missing from the piano top???
Unless one of them has two noses, none.
I think Dopey is mostly blocking Sleepy. At least, I don't think any of the other unblocked dwarfs look sleepy to me.
@@EdwardTonai and JiveDadson I stand corrected. There does seem to be a nose growing out of Dopey's forehead, and it must be Sleepy's.
Despite her excellent playing, six out of seven dwarfs are not Happy.
such cheerful music
It reminds me in the silent movies
Excellent playing. Very good on the left hand octaves. Keep up the good work!
if the factor of muscle memory is finite she definitely reached the limit
Not to diminish her achievement, but trust me when I saw pianists regularly memorise much more extensive pieces.
I´m not 9 years old but i love Scott Joplin too. Excelente Interpretación !!!
It IS a shame that it took so long for ragtime to be recognized as legit, simply because it was played in taverns
This brings back a lot of good old memories. When I was a boy, my uncle was a ragtime pianist. He played in taverns. He also was a piano player in the silent movie theaters. This comment really ages me and my uncle, who was in his 70's when I was a boy.
In taverns they have had a good time even without sth to drink. What a fresh piece of music lord.
Along with the many other wonderful comments you and your doggie are way beyond terrific. So cool, so talented, so accomplished, without any nonsense. Brilliantly entertaining!!! It is the you`s of the world which make life so worth living. Thanks!!!
would love to hear some dynamics sometime on all your pieces. a lot can be said about soft playing mixed with loud.
Open your ears and listen
Great job, love this type of piano playing.
