  • Why is studying the Bible in college so often injurious to faith? Is it because scientific investigation of the Bible has the power to debunk it? Or could there be something wrong with the way modern scholarship engages with the Word of God? Scott Hahn, co-author of The Decline and Fall of Sacred Scripture, takes us on a seven-century journey toward answering these questions.

    If Jesus wanted scholars and PHDs as his 12 Apostles, he would have picked Scribes and Pharisees. It’s amazing what the Holy Spirit can do once upon you.

      There were no PHDs back then... and why would he choose the very people who crucified him? Makes no sense... however if you read the biblical commentary of St. John Chrysostom, there is no doubt that the early church had many scholars who guided them. Even St. Peter went around teaching the apostolic fathers.
      Having said this, nearly every Protestant denomination on the planet prays that The Holy Spirit would help them interpret the scriptures and all of the thousands of interpretation that have come out of Protestantism, Protestants believe are inspired by The Holy Spirt but in reality... none of them are inspired by the Holy Spirit. Only The Magesterium is

      @@famvids9627 your claims don’t hold water when in fact Jesus did pick a person who facilitated his death (Judas) and many/most who denied him or abandoned Jesus, during his most need (Peter and the rest lest John). My claim still stands. He did not pick scribes or Pharisees of the day, but men who through the Holy Spirit was appointed to do great things. Having a degree of today or a title at a school of thought of philosophy of that day, does not make one spiritually qualified to serve as a shepherd in the church (see the letters of Timothy and Titus for the special qualifications of elders bishops and deacons, and by extension Priests). Your example of St. John Chrysostom is not relevant since he did not know Jesus nor the 12 when Jesus started his ministry. Saint John Chrysostom was born into a Christian family in Antioch in the year 349 AD.

    Yay! Back in my young adult days in Boston, a number of us, catholics and protestants, mostly PhD and MD students at BU, MIT and Harvard, critically reviewed some of the textual criticism of the day and found it quite wanting, scientifically. It was full of circular arguments and what we in the hard sciences would consider pseudoscience. Glad you are highlighting these things and bringing a new sense of reading the Bible responsibly.

    I would apply this to some Church documents, too. For example, Vatican II: if you read it as it defines itself, using the supplementary footnotes, you start to see how awesome and true to tradition it is.

    • @littleone1656
      @littleone1656 2 роки тому

      I’d be careful with that. Church documents aren’t to be seen in the same way as the Bible. Therefore, I don’t think they should be interpreted or studied in the same way. Vatican II did away (somewhat) with the Latin Mass and it created so many negative outcomes/consequences in the Church. I believe there were some things that were good from Vatican II but I cannot accept what they did to the Mass of all ages.

    22:05 Cy really hit the nail on the head here;
    Similar to how most atheist arguments are about keeping the believer ‘on their back foot’ (rather than proving any atheist position), the main outcome of modern biblical scholarship is to make God and scripture feel like the other artifacts one studies in university.
    At that point, the reason a person asks a question is more important than any of the answers. All scholars have to do is get them half way there, and a student’s skepticism/religious fatigue does the rest.

    To properly enter the 'forest' of the Bible, particularly the writings of the Hebrew Covenant, i.e., the Old Testament, one must be looking for Someone hidden among the 'trees, plants and shrubs': "Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He (Jesus) interpreted to them what referred to Him in all the scriptures" (Luke 24:27). The Liturgy provides the temporary shelter and the Holy Eucharist is food for the journey through the 'forest' of understanding the sacred writings.

I want to ask a question if I may...the question i'm gonna ask is is God the Father the one who made the 10 commandments and if he is the same God of the other prophets in the old testament? it's kinda confusing me because Jesus, in response to the Pharisees’ question “Who do you think you are?” said, “‘Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.’ ‘You are not yet fifty years old,’ the Jews said to him, ‘and you have seen Abraham!’ ‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’ and we also know that when Moses meets with God in mount sinah,Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, `The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, `What is his name?' ... God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: `I AM has sent me to you. '

    Good discussion, but it is the word of God which can be best defended by God Himself. As the Bible, to those who believe the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. With God on our side it becomes the majority, even if the rest of the world chooses the other side. So scripture's prominence in our society, particularly Western society has declined, but it hasn't diminished the power of the gospel and those who believe in the Apostolic gospel as originally preached in the 1st century go preach about Christ in and out of season and you will see people get saved.

    Saving the bible from experts is necessary. There are thousands more people who fancy themselves bible experts than there are actual bible experts - and the irony is the people who actually are bible experts, will not contradict the Catholic church on theology or doctrine. It's the same with the U.S. Constitution. Salvation, whether political or eternal, does not come from experts or intellectuals. It comes from common sense in the first instance and from Jesus Christ in the latter. I would never trust any intellectual over Jesus Christ, and I would far more trust the first 1,000 names in the Minneapolis phonebook to govern the nation than the first 1,000 names of the tenured professors and faculty at Harvard or Yale university.

    Scott Haun,
    After the early church fell away to catholicism in 533,
    The Bible became a closed Book for a thousand years!
    The catholic dark ages began!
    Schools were outlawed!
    Even if people had a Bible, they couldn’t read it.
    The catholic church closed it in a dead language.
    It was housed in a dead language “Latin” that the people did not understand
    The people were illiterate!
    For a thousand years, they could not read and write.
    The 10th chapter of REVELATION brings us to the reformation under Martin Luther.
    And the work of the reformation was the restoration and the return of the Book to be opened!
    And the angel l saw, “verse five” standing upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand into heaven,
    6 And sware by HIM who liveth for ever and ever, who created the heavens, and the things that are therein, that there shall be delay no longer:
    In other words, we’re gonna give this Bible back to the people, we’re not gonna wait any longer, we’ve been waiting a thousand years.
    Catholic is synonymous with the god of this world, and
    synonymous with MATTHEW 7:13

      If you take a fundamentalist approach, remember that you’ll have a lot of explanations to do in Genesis (especially). One of the many is, “How was it possible that God created the light on the first day and yet, another light was created on the fourth day?” Or the fact that there were only Cain, Adam, and Eve (after Cain killed Abel) on earth, and yet, Cain apparently went to make a family of his own.

    • @VACatholic
      @VACatholic 3 роки тому +1

      @@friendly_user1233 the first/fourth day light thing is not a problem, and requires equivocation to claim it is. Who exists on the earth is similarly not problematic, if one assumes that the Bible doesn't tell you literally everything that's happening, which is obviously true.
      So realistically, you have more to do to explain how evolution makes any sense with respect to God creating Adam from the dust of the earth and breath, and Eve from the rib of Adam. Both of those things are directly in contravention of "evolution", depending on how you define that motte and bailey term.
      So, not exactly, imo.

    The only thing that is injurious about the Bible is that it exposes Catholic beliefs as being lies. For instance, Jesus said: "If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples." (John 8:31) Does the Catholic Church obey the teachings of Jesus? If it does, where in the Bible did Jesus teach that...
    1. it's okay to worship inanimate objects like statues and relics? NOWHERE!!
    2. Mary was immaculately conceived? NOWHERE!!
    3.the Godhead is triune and that the Father, Son, and holy spirit are co-equal in glory and co-eternal in majesty? NOWHERE!!
    4. meat should not be eaten on Fridays and during Lent? NOWHERE!!
    5. unmarried priests are bound to celibacy? NOWHERE!!
    6. Mary can be worshiped? NOWHERE!!
    So, it doesn't take an expert to determine that the Catholic Church is corrupt? Just compare Jesus' teachings with the apostate beliefs of the Church.

      I love the bible verse you are quoting. I use it every day to question my own faith and my behaviour (which should be one and consistent, but I am a sinner). Your argument, though, fails because you base it in Sola Scriptura -implying that only what is in the Bible is what Jesus said and did. Which John himself states is not all contained in the Bible (John 20:30). I would respectfully recommend you read a book by Dr. Hahn, since you are watching one of his videos. The one I have dear to my heart is "Rome Sweet Home". He and his blessed wife address your questions there much better than I could. God bless you, brother, in your journey of faith.

      If you read this guys video, then, answer one question for me. Where did he say in his book that Jesus taught _in Scripture_ that the Godhead is triune and that the Father, Son, and holy spirit are co-equal in glory and co-eternal in majesty?
      One other thing. According to John 20:30, not everything Jesus said and did are recorded in Scripture. So, tell me, are we judged on what is _in_ the Bible or on what is not in Scripture? And another thing, do you believe that what Jesus taught _in_ Scripture would be contradicted by what is not recorded? John 21:25 tells you why not all of what Jesus said and did was made a matter of record. As it says: "There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written."
      As you can see, the God of the Bible, whose name is Yahweh [or Jehovah] has given us enough of Jesus' teachings to know what what Jesus meant when he said: "If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; [and] you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31, 32) Those teachings are found in the Bible. If you believe his teachings are found somewhere else, tell me where.
