I have read The Historian twice. I have the hardback. I can tell you that for the two days that I read this the first time, I couldn’t sleep, as well as three days afterwards. I can’t believe you haven’t read it yet. It’s masterfully written and if you allow yourself to be in that world, I can guarantee you’ll be spooked too. I am low key jealous that you’re experiencing it for the first time. This is one of those books for me.
Hearing you say you hated The Great Believers because there was zero queer joy, followed a few minutes later by These Violent Delights appearing on your TBR made me fully laugh out loud. I can't wait for your review.
The Historian is one of my all time favorites! It never gets enough love, so I'm always excited when someone brings it up. I hope you enjoy it.🕯

The Historian is one of my favourite books, quite a page turner (despite its length), and definitely worth reading!
Damnit Bunny!!! * Shakes fist angrily * you're definitely right about the absolute polarization of this book. I hate, HATE *HATED* this book. There's a point where (at least for me), it just stopped making sense.
I would've LOVED this book had it not been for the stupid ending.

I've been listening to Bunny on audiobook and highly recommend. The acting really adds to the strangeness of it all.
These all sound great! I DNF'd "Bunny" but not because I loathed it: I was so bored, and the writing wasn't great. I value my time too much to read boring, poorly written books, lol! I definitely want to read Makkai's book, but I admit I've never heard of "The Dark Between the Trees" and now I REALLY want to read it :)

🕯I read The Historian when it first came out (as I am a historian myself), and I loved it! I need to reread it. I am not opposed to rereading, but I find I have so many new reads that rereads seem to fall to the sidelines. Am I the only one with this struggle? I don't think so... I hope not...
It is a struggle, but for some reason, October and November have me pulling things off my shelf to reread.

I read The Historian years ago (when it first came out). Would recommend it - was quite different at the time (though partly because of the dearth books I had access to)
The Historian & In My Dreams I Hold A Knife are fabulous! Bunny was....a 'wft' kinda novel.
🕯I'm about halfway through Babel, but that's as close to dark academia as I've gotten (that I can think of, at least). The Historian is tempting me, though.

I would recommend The Lake of Lost Languages by Carol Goodman and I loved The Historian when I read it all those years ago 😆

Please go into These Violent Delights with an open mind. It IS disturbing, but drop the Call Me By Your Name comparison, as I think that one even baffles the author. Micah Nemerever is a gorgeous writer, and this is more Leopold and Loeb inspiration meets Heavenly Creatures. It’s one of my favorites, honestly, and even if you don’t like it, I’m excited to see you giving it a shot!

24:00 mins in, I think you'd Adore "the daughter of Dr Moreau" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, it's a retelling of a classic thriller/horror story but then set in 19th century Mexico... it's gothic, spooky, vibrant, and soo good! highly recommend
Dark Academia seems like something I should love, but so far I've dnfed everything I've tried.

Bunny sounds so much like Heathers, I love the movie. Not sure if I will try this book 🙂 The Secret History is one of my favourite books ever, I also love the Cloisters & .. is Atlas 6 dark academia? I am slowly wading into this. These violent delights was on my TBR until I heard someone describing it in a non complimentary fashion 😄 (I actually thought it was you!) so anyway it is on hold.

Do you perhaps have a video with your thoughts on call me by your name? I haven’t read the book but I’ve watched the film and something keeps bothering me about it and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is so I’ve watched it three times now trying to figure that out and I’m no further so I would love to hear your thoughts.
The Historian was great, but I was slightly disappointed by the end, it just ended too fast, I actually wanted more. Bunny is amazing it's an even more messed up Heathers. I don't know why anyone would compare These Violent Delights to Call Me By Your Name, it's loosely based on the Leopold and Loeb case from the early 20th century in Chicago. It has nothing in common with Call Me By Your Name, in my opinion, other than they are both dark(ish) queer novels. In My Dreams I Hold A Knife was okay, the best thing about it was the title, to be honest. And I just started I Have Some Questions For You, I like it so far.
I read the cloisters a few months ago and I was so disappointed 😭
