I have to confess that I am a book reader but I am not a book collector. About 80% of the books that I read come from the library and my entire physical TBR occupies only two shelves. I don't buy a lot a books and even of the ones that I do buy, I keep very few. Most of the books that I own and have read, end up in a Free Little Library or a donation pile. If I am going to keep a book is because 1) I love it; 2) I am going to re-read it; or 3) I have an emotional connection. I love watching BookTubers with a massive library behind them, but that is not my thing. And I'm okay with that. As always, great video!! 🗑

I’m only 5 minutes in and it already resonates so much, I am both a book collector and an avid reader so my library is a mash of well worn and collectors and friends do not always understand why I feel the need to have say 3 copies of all my Jane Austens in my collection

i love your take on owning books and having your own little library. while i use the library for my audiobooks (which is like 75% of what i read), i do also own a lot of books as well. my friends always say “you’ll never have the time to read everything you buy” and im like okay?? i own them to have them in my own personal library. it doesn’t ultimately matter to me if i get to all of them because i just like having them around me. i also keep a lot of the books i’ve read even if i very rarely reread just in case (and because their presence is just comforting).

I identify so strongly with this. I have unhauled a good chunk of books and found that 2023 was full of me reading books I felt very indifferent toward. It was the highest number of books I had ever read in one year, but I was avoiding larger books that I probably would've enjoyed more. I know when I ultimately move, I'll unhaul even more books. I dream about having the space to build a library full of books I love and books I'm excited to read in the future. I'm done with slogging through things that aren't working for me or holding onto books that don't mean anything to me.

Purging and organizing are two of the seriously most satisfying things in the world for me, and I'm glad it's worked out so well for you. Such a joy to look at your shelves with nothing but eye-twinkle. 😻 🗑

for me, because I live in a small apartment, I tend to unhaul books that I've read almost immediately if I don't intend on rereading them (I usually read too slowly for library books). As a result, my solitary bookcase is full of things I haven't yet read. But it also means that I'm very selective about the books I do buy. It's a double-edged sword, but I know my collection will expand once I live in a bigger place

I am so overdue for a major unhaul. This was great inspiration. And I tend to do a genre at a time when I unhaul. Otherwise I get overwhelmed and can’t make a single decision about anything. 😂 🗑️

  • @k.s.thompson5766
    @k.s.thompson5766 11 місяців тому +5

🗑 Congratulations! That's quite a feat. I did a major unhaul (about 300 books) because I intended to move to another province and didn't want to pack/pay to move a bunch of books I may not read. The move didn't happen but all is well in my world. Now I have a very small collection of books that I will read again, as well as a little TBR cart that currently has 33 books on it, including the GoT series that I borrowed over a year ago.
Since moving to my new home, we have installed a little free library and I now have a shelf for books that I know I won't read again, which are added to the little free library when it needs to be restocked. I find that I know right after I finish a book if I will read it again, so it's a good time to make that decision.
My goal is to get the book cart cleared off and then spend one full year reading exclusively from the library/little free libraries in my neighborhood, as well as re-reading the books that I decided to keep. 🙂

I have a large library collection because I love rereading books or referencing them again, and I love having a large TBR pile i can browse any time. BUT I ruthlessly unhaul books I don't love and I enjoy reanalyzing my collection regularly to see if I still want them, because my tastes and interests have certainly evolved. I love this video because it resonates really strongly with me and it's a good reminder that I need to go through my shelves again!!🗑

Good for you! Loved this. At some point i started feeling like book unhaul videos were click bait because they would get rid of 5 books out of 70. I understand a love of books but to sit through 40 mins of that for 3-5 felt like a waste of my time. This gave me SO MUCH motivation! Books ive kept because i loved them but wont reread or books because the author is black dont have to stay. Great, great video!!

I enjoy the variety of ways we as readers collect books, read books, display books, talk about books, unhaul books, etc. My way is currently working for me but one day it may change and that's ok. So i am totally here to learn about your approach to buying/ collecting, displaying/storing books, and when you let go. I am so hoping we get a massive unhaul video where you talk about each book in turn, but appreciate this will be a lengthy undertaking and youve probably gotten the books out of the house. I'm glad you feel so much lighter! ❤🗑🚮

Coming to terms with the fact that I don't enjoy re-reading books made me thoroughly narrow the books I hold onto. It does mean I don't have the dream wall-to-wall bookshelves, but that works better for my brain than all the books staring at me that I have no interest in picking up again. And I still read a ton!

  • @stephanielohutko3085

🗑 I had to fight through a lot of judgment when I unhauled the vast majority of my physical books. As much as I love them, I haven't read an actual physical book in several years (other than graphic novels). I keep the physical versions that are my favorites or books I really like but can't find for my Kindle or Audible, and unhauled the rest. I realized that my huge library had taken over the house, and I was not planning on reading any of those versions in that format in the foreseeable future. It's been a giant success.
I've never had the energy or need to unhaul from my Kindle or Audible books; they don't take up physical space, so why bother? But recently, I've been starting to think about how many Kindle books I buy for $1.99 or $2.99, and how many haven't been read. 2 and 3 dollars is cheap, but it still adds up when you're getting 1 or 2 most days...😅

🗑♻Way to go with the ruthless unhaul! I salute your wisdom and self-knowledge. In the past I would periodically (approx. monthly) gather books to trade in at the used bookstore or Little Free Library. And then I moved to a street with three LFLs on my block and several more in the direct vicinity on an easy driving/parking route. So I started keeping a bag of books in the car for trading purposes, and that made me look at every book I finished reading with the question: Should keep this or trade it for a better book? I got rid of many and also acquired many, to the point that I started supplying friends, lol.
I have a large personal library: a couple of moves ago, a mover weighed the book boxes and said the total was over one ton - 2000 pounds. I know it's more now, because my chief personal luxury and favorite gift has always been books. But I now have to reduce the number drastically due to merging households. So I am using 2024 to be ruthless with the unhauling. My plan: Get my own LFL and keep it stocked with books I no longer want to own. But you can believe I'll keep an eye for any interesting tomes that come into my TARDIS. Yes, I had a bright blue mini phone booth built because I am just that nerdy.

I have once purged ~30% of my books, that was when we were moving abroad and everything had to fit in one van. After that, I've just picked out books I don't think I'll want to read again and release them into the wild. That big, forced cull made getting rid of books much easier 🗑️

as a new mom, my physical tbr has gotten kind of out of control. i have very little time to read now, so it kind of hurts to look at the books on my shelves because i know i just don't have time to read them. but i love collecting! i'm constantly on the lookout for new books or books i've read through my library and loved. i do still read a few books a month, but it's getting harder as my son gets older. i'm due for an unhaul, but it's hard for me to get rid of books i've spent my own money on. it's a mental hurdle i have to jump, but i know i'll be happier when i do!
also, I LOVE your library! we live in a very small house, so i don't have much room to store books. i've got one Ikea bookshelf downstairs, with a smaller 4-cube Ikea bookshelf that holds series and hardbacks. but other than that, i barely have anywhere else to put books! we'll be purchasing a home in the next few years and we are looking for 4-bedroom houses so that we can have an extra room to use as a home office/home library!

I'm "lucky" in that I don't have a 'physical' book collection beyond maybe 6 books (most of my previous collection was lost due to homelessness) that said I do have alot of ebooks (thousands) that I really have to go though since I know I won't and can't ever read them all! I do kind of enjoy organising them though!
What you said on the rivers of London series reminded me of why I don't read the Mercy Thompson series anymore. I don't want to have to read another series to know all the events in that shared universe that get referenced in the Mercy series (plus I tried and cannot stand Charles in the Alpha and Omega books, something about him just annoyed me)

i try to keep a trim TBR, cause i notice that if I have a book on my shelf for a long period of time I lose interest 😂 currently though, each month I put my read books in a stack, and at the end of the month, they either go back to the library, go on my shelf like a trophy if I enjoyed them enough, or get unhauled to go to another home. then of course a seasonal ruthless unhaul of the ones still on my shelves, but it's getting trickier and trickier since I unhaul so consistently lol

If a book is a DNF, then it immediately goes on a pile to donate/sell. There are books that I read and know I won’t ever read again and I pass them along to friends or put them on that same pile. I will also periodically go through my shelves and pull out books that I don’t think I will ever read again and don’t want to keep so I can lend them. Most of my SFF stays and a lot of them have been reread. I’ve even tracked down copies of books I read at the library years ago and loved, so I can reread them if I choose. I very rarely unhaul unread books - I have unread books from years ago and I still want to read them.

At one time in my life there was a huge library of books. I was still living within the family and those books were considered "our" books. But I was also brought up to use the library which, of course, allowed expansion of reading experience beyond the home shelves. And then as the family members moved, taking some or none of their own identified books the library began to change. Although, in the various places I lived as a young and older adult, I was fond of having many books I didn't always have space. I suppose this to say that I've learned to limit purchases and use the library. Periodic donations occur. But it took till my late 60's to reach a point of letting go. Expressing my identity became more a sharing of titles and author names rather than a showing of the books.
**I really enjoy your channel and nevertheless am a bit jealous of those full shelves!

Wowza! That is a SERIOUS unhaul. My approach now to unhauling is that everything I read throughout the month gets a stack on my living room shorter bookcase. In part for the aesthetic and accountability of posting on instagram for sure lol. But then I also have to acknowledge that stack everyday. I look at them consistently and can easily see what I liked, loved, hated, or was just ok. Then they either are kept, set aside for friends and family that have specific taste that I know, or go into my car to be donated if and when I can find a little free library or a book donation bin.

I am facing homelessness soon, and this means getting rid of my belongings, including books. I thought this was going to be harder than it is. Turns out that a majority of my library was kept just because i liked it and thought I would reread, but it turns out too many books too little time. Too many new ones to dive into. I was keeping them out of sentimentality alone, but found I wasn't that attached to them. So far the keep pile is about 1/4 of my original library, and that is probably going to have to be culled down. I'm also finding a lot of stuff that I don't use, but it was tucked away and not in the way so I didn't think about it. This whole experience has given me a new outlook on "stuff" and commercialism. You learn a lot about the difference between need and want.

🗑️ I like rehoming books right away once I’ve read them. I keep only a very few fiction books, but I like to keep nonfiction books about nature. Much love from northern Maine, USA 💖

I haven’t bought a book for my home library in well over 2 years. (I have bought a few for my toddlers library) but literally all of my reading consists of what I get from the library. If my library doesn’t have a title I want I request it (we get 5 requests a month). I fell out of love with buying books when I realized I am not a rereader… I don’t do it unless it’s an all time top of the list Favorite. Those books I do want to own and sadly I haven’t found many of those books that I think yes. I need to reread this book immediately.

🗑 Congrats! It takes a lot to be able to stand back, take in all of your books, and be honest about where you are now compared to where you were when you acquired them. I unhauled the copy of "Frankenstein" that I got in college. It was my first copy and the first time I'd ever read it. I've probably unhauled over 300 books over the years and there's only a couple I wish I had kept (including that one), so that's not a bad average.

I don't care if the books are hardcovers or paperbacks. I don't care if it's aesthetic to look at. I just want to own books I enjoy, which is why I'm trying to get rid of books that don't bring me joy anymore. It's difficult tho

I read Rivers of London until book 7.5 and none of the graphic novels and I’m done. I read the synopsis of the next books and meh, also… where’s my Nightingale? It looks like I’m ok with character development in a series as long as it happens in the same or similar setting. If it’s too different, I loose interest and DNF series whose first books are absolute favorites.

🗑️ I usually get rid of most of the books I read. I have very little shelf space. So I try to only keep ones that I really enjoyed or will reread. That being said, I do have one entire bookcase of unread books. And two small bookcases of read books. I still have to cull them every few months. You don’t realize the pressure that some of the books cause until you get rid of them. I recently got rid of a giant stack of classics that had been eyeing me from across the room. I felt like I SHOULD read classics. But I almost never enjoy them and they were very daunting. Donating those felt like a huge weight was lifted. I SHOULDNT have to read ANYTHING. Its all about what I WANT to read and what makes me excited. It’s a good feeling after you ransack the shelves.

  • @ramblingenby

I love getting rid of things, so I typically get rid of books randomly a few at a time. I mostly keep books that I plan on rereading, for me, I don't see the point of keeping books I didn't love. Reading more from the library has helped a lot because now I often don't buy books unless I've already read and loved them.
But, I am running out of room on my shelves, and I did just get a big stack of comics that I had to make room for by getting rid of a stack of equal size. And I'll probably need to start doing that with the rest of my books soon too. It's a never ending problem! 🗑

      2) I think I want more readers to find it (I have my local queer space has library, or second hand bookstore)
      4) have more than one edition
      5) I'm not sure why I owned it

🗑That was an amazing unhaul - we don't even have that many books! I tend to get rid of books when I've read them - there are only a very few books I've kept - hubby is different - he keeps certain authors and will reread the books many times - we are at the moment looking for better copies of some of those because he's read them to death! I do also like to read authors in order so will sort of collect/amass their works then once I'm drawn to them I'll read a few one after the other. We buy most of our books from charity shops and give back to them afterwards. 🗑

I personally couldn't read past book 2 from Rivers of London because it's kinda sexist. The main character sees all female characters, apart from his mom (thank heavens), in sexual terms first and foremost. Women are something he can bang first then things he sees as human. It was such an interest premisse and world. I was bummed but couldn't get past that. Now that I found out about the shenanigans with the comics, I'm glad I ditched it.
