I have seen several productions of Aida, at first didn’t want to see this one, so glad I did. Felt it was meaningful. The singing was amazing. Loved it

Υοu had the privelege/money/age to have seen Aida in several productions. But you forget that in the auditorium there were many perople who were watching it for the first time. A director must have the dignity and responsibility to never forget that.

I'm not really convinced by this vision of Aïda in modern times, eventhough I usually like Carsen's productions.

I am surprised that Maestro Pappano indulged in this travesty of "art". He conducted the superb recording of the opera with Jonas Kaufmann as Radames
    and Anja Harteros singing Aida.
"Aida" is set in ancient Egypt so why "update" it to where-ever?
I still fondly remember the 1968 production with Gwynneth Jones singing Aida. I am sure they can still find the costumes and rescue the 2023 performances.

I know this is out of context, but when the director, Robert Carsen says to the ensemble at around 2:41 "without worrying about the music..." Should have not been included in this promo as it can be symbolized as the music is not important. And yes, I may tend to overthink, but just sayin'!

I think he was just focused on the staging and trying to tell the cast to make that their priority.

@@Hojotoho.Yall504 Yes, I believe that is the truth but symbolically I would have edited it out. Mr. Carsen probably had nothing to do with the video production and it's a small thing, so ultimately the proof is in the pudding. How the production turns out. Personally, I liked the singing of Aida and Radames so I'm on board.

And I agree, Mr Meli is fantastic. His Cavaradossi and Radames are both excellent.

I came here to hate on this atrocious production that diminishes the unique beauty and cultural aesthetics of the opera and transforms it into another dull modernized military bore with the most lackluster setting and depressive visuals, holding on to the outstanding authenticity of the opera will never be boring or repetitive but this type of literal unimaginative recreations strips it of its true color and identity and the element of escapist entertainment, I hope this production cease to exist soon enough

What a ridiculous idea for a new production of Aida. Keeps the ROH looking hip and not so class-ridden after all.

Why the soloists do not withdraw from all these stupid euro-trash productions that domimate more more all the opera houses ???? If you claim you love to sing the music, you can not just watch it being humiliated by all these pretentious directors. You visit and pay your ticket to see AIDA, not Nixon in China. The libretto that inspired the composer has a specific content that must be respected, at least taken into serious consideration...... When enough is enough ?

A horribly conceived version of a great opera. I felt sorry for the cast.

This, along with the all grey Don Giovanni at the Vienna State Opera, and fairly grey Tosca at Budapest show that there is nothing *original* at all in these dank dark productions. Just awful.

Why Pappano makes all these stupid grimaces when he conducts.... it is not easy for the musicians. Dear Carsen, as much as you like it, you are not more talented and important than Verdi.
