Ask was released as a single in October 1986, as with most of The Smiths' singles, it was not included on an original album. The song features Kirsty MacColl on backing vocals.
    Lyrics
    Shyness is nice, and
    Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
    You'd like to
    Shyness is nice, and
    Shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life
    You'd like to
So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me, I won't say no, how could I?
    Coyness is nice, and
    Coyness can stop you
From saying all the things in
    Life you'd like to
So, if there's something you'd like to try
If there's something you'd like to try
Ask me, I won't say no, how could I?
    Spending warm summer days indoors
    Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg
Ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me
    Because if it's not love
Then it's the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
    That will bring us together
Nature is a language, can't you read?
Nature is a language can't you read?
So ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me
    Because if it's not love
Then it's the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
    That will bring us together
    If it's not love
    Then it's the bomb
    Then it's the bomb
    That will bring us together
So ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me
Oh, la, la, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la
    La, la, la, la

I listened to this song on Feb. 2, 1989, then made an agitated phone call to ask out the girl who had borrowed my coat the day before. Looking back, I don't think that agitated bravado is much preferrable to shyness. All the same, she said, yes, and here we are, happily married 33 years later-- despite a few bombs along the way!

As a shy person I used to think, when I was young, that adulthood would magically cure me. At 58 I am still shy and find human interaction really painful at times. I used to play this in my room and sing it as an affirmation. It felt good to know that I was not the only person who struggled

Me too, always struggles. This song sang to my heart. Nowadays at 50 I am happy to be alone with my cat most of the time and do the things I really love in my own relaxed way : D Turns out that also then for me there is enough human contact happening, but without the efforts. And @crowseagull: We are all kind of autistic by the childhood-vaccinations. Look up what is in them ! Apart from other strange and toxic substances: Aluminium in high doses ! Remember what is said about aluminium and effects on the brain ? So why put it in 'vaccines' for babies and young children in high doses ??? I can meanwhile think of some reasons. Maybe the same reasons that DDT was promoted sooo safe and effective ? : / Anyway... detox from metals can help and it can also help realising that most of these 'popular' people are mostly shalow and not interesting anyway : ) hh

    • @MunroPage
      @MunroPage 10 років тому +194

Well, based on the fact that the song is about a relationship, I'd assume this how he spends his days, away from the outside world, and instead he's more concerned about writing to his girlfriend (who happens to be from Luxembourg). "Frightening Verse" is probably a referral to writing appallingly cheesy or over-romantic language, which other people might find ghastly or ridiculous.
That's what I see it as, but these are Morrissey's lyrics and he means 4 different things with whatever he writes. Which is partly why he is probably the best lyricist of all time.

Zachary L You have an interesting, non-sequitur train of thought. Showing you something else that's witty won't show how this isn't witty. You have to show how *this* is witty. The burden of proof is on the person making the main claim, not denying it.

    • @123paul
      @123paul 7 років тому +5

To suggest you provide an example of wit is not a non-sequitur in this context. Nor did he suggest that you providing an alternative witty lyric would either prove or disprove whether Morrissey has been witty. As for the burden of proof: what on earth are you talking about. Someone has made a comment on a song lyric. In any event your identification of the supposed burden of proof, as you put it, tells us noting. You have completely overlooked the evidence. If he has the burden of proof then he has discharged it. The lyric is evidence of its own wit. Twat.
