    The knurling on the 925 has to be my favorite knurling on any pencil.

    You know you have a problem when you are out to dinner with your family and you check for a new clutch situation video. I can't believe I have to wait 2 hours until I can watch this!

      LOL.

      Well worth the wait, I can relax now. So what other honorable mention categories do you have for us?

      At present just the "Best of the Rest" that don't make the Top Ten.

      Sounds good, but to be honest, i'm a little disappointed that that means only one video. ;D

    I bought the Pentel GraphGear 1000 a couple of weeks ago and I'm amazed by the sturdy mechanism of the lead! It really feels like a non retractable! Great video, really satisfies me as a mechanical pencil nerd! Greetings from Mexico!

    I currently have an Alvin draft magic in .5 . I might buy a panel graphgear 500 in .5 or .3. This was a very enjoyable video. Keep up with the good content.

    You could just make a top 5 or 7 list for each different type of pencils. Like drafting list, general writing list, top economy pencil list. Things like that.

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      I had thought of Economy. Thanks for reminding me!

    • @claytonneas9021

      Clutch Situation no problem. I also just thought of you could maybe do top side click mechanisms. Or even top pencils from each brand. Like top Pentel, top Staedtler. Something along those lines.

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      The only issue I forsee is that some "categories" aren't very well represented in terms of total numbers. I mean, there aren't that many side click advance pencils out there. I'd end up picking every side advance pencil out there, or I'd end up picking the best two of five for a "list", which then isn't even a list.

    Didn’t realize that the Pentel SMASH was going away. Egad! A quick trip to standard and eBay vendors showed this to be quite true. Ended up getting the “last one” from two eBay vendors in Japan (one black & one brown) and one from a USA vendor also in black. Trying not to be greedy so that should do me. Thanks for the heads up. Hey...I de-pen-d on you for this kind of info.

      They were recently re-released as a color series limited edition, so there may be hope for Limited editions released sporadically.

    I'm pretty sure the GG 500 in Japan still have the lead hardness indicator on them.

    • @ClutchSituation

      You're correct. Japanese versions do have the LHI. Muji version in other comment is an example...

    Just was thinking about the graphgear 500 with what you said about your version is slightly incorrect since your version is the newer version however it was made for the US if you come here to Scotland you will find that the graphgear 500 is sold in the original Japenes version with the lead hardness indacator

    3:00 in the criteria you mentioned that 701 is better at writing because it has a shorter fixed sleeve. can you elaborate on that, because im interested in mainly taking hand notices on some instructional videos so far im aimed at a steadler package 0.5 + 0.7 ( 2 in the pack, with a rubber grip and 4mm fixed sleeve). also id like to have both a 0.5 and a 0.7 due to a heavier hand) thank you.

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  3 роки тому

      I prefer a conical or shortened lead sleeve for writing because the motions are automatic and I would prefer to have closer proximity between my hand and the paper. Drafting sleeves are great for drawing and technical work because you can see what you are doing and use the pencil against a ruler.

    I just adore the GG 1000. As a construction worker, I really like that it's retractable, so the nice long sleeve stays safe at work when it falls out of my pocket. The only problem I have with them is that I ALWAYS lose the little eraser cap. It's very annoying!

  • @Y13A
    @Y13A 7 років тому

    For my birthday a friend gifted me a GraphGear 500 0.3 mm in white from Muji -- which I would recommend checking out. It has a matte anodized trim, as well as a lead hardness indicator on the eraser cap. Overall, it feels like a much more refined version of the GG 500 in this video. For around 8 bucks, I'd definitely recommend it.

    I'm thinking about getting the pentel graphgear 1000 or the rOtring 600 what would you recommend and just so you know I'm in high school and want to be an architect and I have another question what does a lead hardness indicator do

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому +2

      The GG has the advantage of being pocket safe. The 600 is lighter and has a better grip. Ask yourself which features are most important to you. A lead hardness indicator can be rotated to display which grade of lead is in a pencil. (HB, 2B, F, etc)

    Hey! I'm a fan of drafting pencils and i'm really thinking about buying my first one. I'm really interested in Stadtler 925 25/35 and Graph 1000 for pro. Do you have any suggestion? Please, I'm quite crazy about it. Huge fan of yours!!!

    when I got my 1st graph gear I threw it in the air and it landed on cement, so I gave it to my friend and now the lead has a problem advancing to the tip from storage chamber. he still like s using it. I got a 0.3 graphg gear at hobby lobby. ALL are graph gears 500

  • @bballwatcher2224

    Yeah, I have the S5 in 0.3 mm as well, and the mechanism turns me away due to a huge advancement of lead (6 mm for ten clicks).

      One of only two pencils I honestly dislike. The other one is the Zebra Color Flight, which takes the Pentel Sharp P203 body but does not feel like a Pentel Sharp.

    I have a really old pentel smash that is a light pinky purple that i never used became i became infatuated with the pentel twist erase. My model number is Q1005.......not sure why it doesnt have an X in the model number but i will give it a chance.

    People should check out the Alvin Draft-Tec Retrac (also found at Blick). It's a super pocket safe retractable with very little wobble. Mine's a 0.3mm. It's great!

    I may have heard you wrong on the Pentel Smash, but I cannot find a q100X, only a Smash q1005. I understand that it is no longer manufactured, but a google search only comes up with the model number q100X for the Smash when I do a search for it. In addition, that is the only model number I am seeing on EBAY and Amazon too.

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      That means that the SMASH only came in .5 mm. I put an X in any model number when it has multiple variants. For example, I call the Sharp series P20X because the model numbers are P203, P205, P207, P209.

    I'm trying to chose between the tombow mono graph zero and the Alvin draft matic. Which one do you think is a better pencil?

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      They are both great. The benefits of the Zero are the twist up eraser that is easily accessible, a softer knurling, and probably cheaper. The benefit of the Draft/Matic is a sharper knurling, lead hardness indicator and a larger design that might fit a larger hand better.

  • @David.Buckheister

    Where would you rank the TWSBI precision as far as drafting pencils? I know you have problems with the weight and the grip, but I feel the mechanism is solid. I myself don't have any experience with the fixed lead sleeve version so I cannot speak to that.

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      I don't have any experience with the fixed version either so I don't feel comfortable reflecting on it.

    • @MarkVsharK
      @MarkVsharK 7 років тому +1

      I have both versions and I like a fix tip better. The clutch mechanism feels the same on both. Although they feel the same in the hand, I like the fix tip a bit more because the writing feels a bit more solid and the sleeve is a bit longer like other drafting pencils. In terms of actual drafting, I find the weight to be a bit much, I lose some fine control over line darknesses. I agree the clutch isn't the best but I really enjoy the pencil

  • @mattsmith5253
    @mattsmith5253 4 роки тому

    I respect the Draft-Matic but it's action is very scratchy, the pencil has a "different" feel to its body in the hand, and the lead sleeve is _very_ vulnerable and prone to bending.

    • @mattsmith5253
      @mattsmith5253 4 роки тому

      When I can, I'd like to to give the Rapid-O-Matic, the originator, a try.

    Is the platinum pro-use really called the platinum pro-use 1? And how do you think it compares to the second version?

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      Yes, that is it's official name. Check it out: www.jetpens.com/Platinum-Pro-Use-II-05-Drafting-Pencil-0.5-mm/pd/1461 I personally don't like fat grips and whether or not 25 USD is a fair price for it would be in the eye of the beholder.

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  7 років тому

      There is also the Platinum Pro-Use (No Number - JetPens calls it "Original") that is more of a classic drafting pencil.

  • @aluisiofsjr

    You shoud merge the 925 25 with the Pro Use I because they are basically the same pencil with interchangable parts.
    Pilot S20 has the worse mechanism????? You are crazy, dude... I love the giant brass claws of this pencil, very soft and audible feedback, very precise.

    I think you should just keep it simple at top 10 with honourable mentions. I think too many categories or ranks will make it confusing. It’s easier to just keep it at top 10 and honourable mentions

    Why not try the muji aluminum mechanical pencil

    • @ClutchSituation
      @ClutchSituation  6 років тому +1

      I have. I find that the components unscrew easily and I spend a lot of time putting it back together. This is a central design problem with all metal. Freedom of movement results in unintentional disassembly.
