Solution to Bonus Riddle: brilliant.org/TedEdRoboAnts/
The good news is that your experimental robo-ants are a success. The bad news is that you accidentally gave them the ability to shoot deadly lasers … and you can’t turn it off. Can you stop them from escaping their habitat before the lasers are activated? Dan Finkel shows how.

Can you please tell the answer for the bonus riddles in the next riddle video
Hey Ted-Ed this is either the first riddle I solved or one of the first.(on this channel)
TED-Ed the first riddle was obviously to answer it took me like five seconds to figure out I apologize if that was rude
So I try to solve the bonus riddle on my own, with some sketches...
I try with 3 meet 2, and I get 6. Then 4 meet 3, I get 12. Then 5 meet 4, I get 20. Then 6 mert 5, I get 30
The only pattern that I get is that, the number of collision in each stage is ascending and then decending
For example, when 5 meet 4, i get : 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1
Thus, if we start with 0 and add each from the previous sum: 0 +1=1 +2=3 +3=6 +4=10 +4=14 +3=17 +2=19 +1=20
If 6 meet 5, the pattern of collision in each stage, one by one, will get: 1,2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2,1.
Thus start with zero: 0 +1=1 +2=3 +3=6 +4=10 +5=15 +5=20 +4=24 +3=27 +2=29 +1=30
So, in theory, if 30 meet 20, it should be 1,2,3,...19,20,20,19,...3,2,1
Thus starting from zero, it will be 0 +1=1 +2=3 +3=6 +4=10 +5...594 +3=597 +2=599 +1=600
It suppose to be 600 collisions (Don't worry I didn't sum up every single digit, cause I just realised the true pattern XD)
After typing this, I realise that... When 3 meet 2, get 6, And 4 meet 3, get 12
Then I also realise that 3×2 will get 6, and 4×3 will get 12. Same with 5×4 = 20 and 6×5=30
So technically, if 30 meet 20, it will be 30×20, which is 600
Therefore, they are 600 collisions when 30 ants meets 20 ants in opposite direction. :D
I don't know if this is right or wrong, this is just what I get after drawing circles for an hour XD
TED-Ed yeah. Now we need more riddles.

imagine they just escape the tubes and start crawling all over you 🥶
"How many total ant collisions will there be?"
Infinity, as no end state is given.
The riddle also doesn't state what happens when the ants reach the end of the tube in the bonus riddle. Your answer of infinity assumes that the tube is closed off at both sides and that these ants act in the same way as the previous ants at a dead end.
@@HeyRa131 Very true. That still makes all solutions either infinity or none.
@@weckar I disagree. I think if you engage with the problem in the way it's intended, that the ants leave the tube when they reach an end, then the answer is pretty clearly 600.
@@HeyRa131 I have just made some tries with pens' lids, and it indeed appears that the number of collisions equals the product of the number of ants on each side (when there are no dead ends) :
- 2×2 = 4 collisions for 2-2 ants.
- 3×3 = 9 collisions for 3-3 ants.
- 2×1 = 2 collisions for 2-1 ants.
Still, how to prove it mathematically?
@@hugobarriez682 I'm not sure if this will satisfy your question but here's how I've come to understand it. Let's remember that since the ants collide and immediately turn with no loss in momentum, then the result is no different than the ants passing by each other. Once we conceptualize it as the ants passing each other then it becomes clear that every ant on one side will have to pass every ant on the other side before leaving. So the answer for the total number of passes is the product of the two sides.

Bonus riddle answer : 600
Imagine one ant moving into 30 ants as collisions are same as ants crossing each other there will be 30 crossings for 1 ant!
Therefore for 20 ants it would be 20×30=600
Until they hit the wall and start colliding all over again... Infinite?
@@TXLionHeart I think you have to assume the ends of the tubes are open, they should have made it more clear in the question.

@@darksca1804 Okay, here's a another bonus riddle, then:
Imagine the tube is a circle. How many collisions would have to occur until all of the ants are going the same direction and will no longer collide?
@@TXLionHeart This will never happen. After a series of collisions, there will be always 30 ants go in one direction and the other 20 go the opposite direction.
Robo-ants: (exist)

"Note: When the roboants reach either end of the tube, they exit the tube."
But I don’t think this is too important, because reaching the end they wouldn’t beat head to head😅
Anyway, is the answer 600?😛
well then its 600 collisions right?
every ant will collide twice (considering only one round) but it needs 2 to collide and the 2 in the middle too, the last 2 will only have one collision then leave. so 49+47+45+43+.......+11 and the last 10 then can leave with no problem

The bonus riddle is 20*30=600. You can use the fact that two ants meeting and changing directions being equivalent to them passing through each other, and then you get that each ant on the left meets each ant on the right exactly once
First riddle I genuinely got right! Kinda easy, though. I liked the fluid animation parts and the retrofuturistic style.
This one was pretty easy. From the very beginning, I could tell that the ant ricocheting was irrelevant, even if I wasn't quite sure why. From that point on, it was just a matter of figuring out what two points would prevent any ant from lasting longer than five minutes.
they last longer than me
I wasn’t listening to half the things he said, so I just focused on where the ants would go and still got the right answer. Without even considering the time limit or how long the ants would take to walk somewhere 😅
TLDR: You have to maximize coverage. Intersections have the most traffic. The more intersecting roads, the more traffic; pick the one with the most roads. Nearby units will inevitably end up in that intersection, but if they're further away it's not guaranteed. You have to pick the furthest intersection from your first choice next, to ensure all roads inevitably lead to a trap.
How do you “accidentally” give them lasers?
You were trying to "accidentally" take over the world.
And "accidentally" take your revenge on the short-sighted fools who have yet to recognise your genius
very carefully
For that matter, how do you do it on purpose? Logically speaking, a laser capable of causing structural damage should require a significant power source, the likes of which would be, at the very least, quite difficult to fit inside of something the size of an ant.
Listen, mad scientists believe something as pathetically limiting as 'impossible' could never stop them from achieving greatness, you simpleton. Now begone before I unleash my gatling gun robo-pangolins.

Well done. It seems you're better with intuition than with spending time thinking of something. As it's intuitive that opposite intersections work best and that the intersection with 4 works best. You know what, I think this was planned right from the very beginning.
1:31 *A LOT OF DAMAGE*
Is the answer to the ant collision question 20x30 or so? Doing the math in my head, that seemed like the way it would go, and since effectively, each ant collision is the same as the ants continuing at the same speed, 30 ants crossing 20 ants is 20 x 30, or 600 ant collisions.
I’m glad I’ve been looking at these riddles, the trick is almost always to start with a smaller example, and look for a pattern
The animation in this one is amazing
You: Whoops, i dropped my laser pointer into the ant habit tat. haha silly m-
Ants: LASERS ONLINE
I’m pretty sure for the bonus riddle it’s 600 a good example is how he explained it. He explained that it’s the same when ants collide as them switching places. And because placing doesn’t matter you can ignore that. One good example is imagine that the ants phase through each other and that every time they do it’s one collision. So imagine the first ant walking through all 20 other ants and reaching the end where it escapes. Then the next then the next. And the observant among you may notice this is a lot like multiplication and that’s because it is. You add 20 30times which is the same as multiplication so 20*30 which equals 600.
My reasoning was quite complicated by I also arrived at the same answer. Your solution is a lot more concise and intuitive though.
@@kylespencer6461 but after each collision the number of ants decreases so you shouldn't multiply it by 20

Wow idk why but all the riddles I have found by Ted Ed recently have been easy af. This one literally took me seconds. Some of those other riddles got me dumbfounded. Usually because it’s some crazy mathematical or logic solution but still. You’re better than this Theodore
As for the bonus riddle, it's a good idea to start with an easier question: How many ants turn around if there only a few ants. The idea is to find out the pattern when you change the amount of ants on each side. One side can be represented with the variable m and the other with the variable n and c is the amount of collides.
m-n: c
~~~~
1-0: 0
1-1: 1
2-0: 0
2-1: 2
2-2: 4
3-0: 0
3-1: 4
3-2: 6
3-3: 9
...
It's easy to see that this is a multiplication i.e. m · n. In case m = 30 and n = 20, it's therefore 600 collisions.
“And you accidentally gave them *_deadly lasers_*
We don’t need another deadly laser.
*_The sun is s deadly laser_*
*_not anymore there’s a blanket_*
Two years late but I discovered that recently and now I try solve every riddle I find.
So for my solution (before seeing what they'll say in the vid) is you just have to think about two thing before insert the vaccum nozzles.
1 - to be sure that there are no path that is longer that 5 segment before reaching both of the nozzles (because if it does, that means that you ant may take more than 5 minutes to reach the nozzle)
2 - to be sure that they are no loop. (for exemple, not letting the square in the top of the drawing without a nozzle in any point). Even if in an intersection, an ant choose randomly where it goes, it may choose a lot of time to go on the loop once again, and so take more than 5 minutes to reach a nozzle
If there are 100 ants, and they change direction when colliding between them or with a dead end, and they even choose randomly which direction they goes when they're in an intersection, it is mostly impossible to predict where they will be at any moment.
You just have to be sure that in 5 minutes, all the ants will pass by the point where you insert the nozzles.
Am i wrong with that reasoning ?
So, I think the solution is to put the two nozzles in the bottom square. One in the S-E corner and another in the N-W corner.
I'll soon see if I'm right .
