Left for dead in a repair shop for 12 years finds new life, take a look at this blast from the Mustang Connection past.
Barrett Jackson 2010 Oragne County Fantasy Bid Car 1969 Mercury Cougar Fully restored Part 1.
1969 Mercury XR7 updated with Eliminator package. The car was delivered new in Southern California with the following options, XR7 package, 351W, high back bucket seats, console, power steering, power disc brakes, air conditioning, tinted glass, FMX automatic transmission and 9" rear end. The car has just undergone an extensive 2 restoration. The car retains all of its original sheet metal and has been refinished with a base coat clear coat Ford black with custom red Eliminator stripes. To complete the cosmetic Eliminator look, the car has front and rear spoilers, blacked out front and rear grill, an original Eliminator hood scoop and correct style hood pins. All chrome, trim and weatherstripping redone. The entire original drivetrain was pulled during the exterior restoration. The 351W now sports some mild modifications, the FMX has a shift kit and the 9" differential is now a 3.50 trac lok. Fully detailed engine bay. The following were all removed for complete rebuild, refurbishment or replacement. Complete air conditioning, heat, cooling, braking system, electrical and vacuum system, gas tank, all soft and hard lines. All chrome and moldings, front windshield were all redone. Interior removed during paint, new headliner, carpet and seat covers. All parts repainted or re-dyed or replaced as needed. Full Alpine sound system installed to look as factory as possible. The suspension was completely rebuilt. The car sits in a lowered stance that makes the car handle and ride very well. Custom fitted Raceline 17" wheels. To retain a factory style look, the center caps were custom machined to fit magnum 500 Cougar center caps in red to match the red Eliminator stripes.
Great looking car, I love those old Cougars
Thanks Ron! So am I counting you in for the throwback video response ?
So much better than a Mustang ! more exclusive especially the 69 with Horozontal grill !
Cool Cougar, and I want in !
Thanks Freddie, You gotta just do a quick throwback video, thanks man!
Nice, I hope my 1970 looks that good some day.
It looked much better in black!
Great car. :-)
Thanks Cecil! So are you gonna do a "Throwback video" ? I wanna see your name in the hat for that fine bottle of spirits!
Hey Rich, font know if you remember all too much. I have 68 289 and I was wonderin if you or anybody else knew what the best type of catb for it would be? Thanks bud keep up all the great vids too
Is it a 2 or 4 barrel intake? Stock motor?
Im pretty sure its a 2 & -8it is the original engine
A 2 barrel Autolite 2100 is what they came with, ebay should have a bunch they are very common and plentiful
Thanks rich I appreciate it
Edgar Sanchez Good luck with it, I think even Autozone, O'Reily's etc will carry that or they can order it. ...
Those cougars are definitely pretty cool looking cars. There's a small gathering of them here locally. Not sure what the burnt orange paint issues were but that color looked pretty cool. But so did the black. I like the wheels too. I'm assuming that engine was a 351w? I'll have to dig out some pictures and see what throwback I can do. Thanks for the video Rich.
Thanks Billy, Ya I was bummed when it first came out of paint, way too many fish eyes they had to re shoot the whole car. I decided to paint it black and change the whole theme. Looking forward to your video response buddy!
Yeah I'm not sure what to talk about but I'll try to figure out something.
Very nice
Thank you!
What a sweet car
Thanks, so are you in on the contest? A throwback video of your own?
MustangConnection1 Yes im going to do one today and submit it wish me luck I like aga'vie by the shot.
The rear gas door is not proper Eliminator. They had a "cougar" emblem, not a Mercury Division emblem.
Yes it was a replica, started as an XR7
Awesome .
Mordoor 53 Thanks Kevin!
My throw back would be my first 442 Olds. Had it for two months and backed it into a pine tree going 50 or 60 MPH. That was a great car original 455 very rare silver with black stripes.
Mitchell, Ouch! Sounds like a great car, the 442's have really come into their own the past few years with collectors . Don't suppose you have any pictures of the car or anther one you want to share on video?
I have a few after it was wrecked somewhere.
Neat car for sure Rich.
Thanks for watching George, Are you in on the "throwback" video? It would be great to have a video response from you!
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man George, Of Course that would be great I just checked out your video and wow, awesome!
It would be great to see another throwback if you are so inclined thank you!
I understand we may have some folks who are not drinkers, just thought it would be a nice gesture so stay tuned there will be more freebies coming.
The Shade Tree Fix-it Man Nice rides George
scottsinfl
Thank you sir.
I've allways wondered, was the Eliminator a variant of the car, or more of an options package? For instance, was it possible to have an XR7/Eliminator combination like this done at a dealership?
The Eliminator package was never available with the XR7 package but rather a stand alone upgrade on a regular cougar. They had blacked out features inside and out and the drive train options were M, S, Q , Q or R for '69 and the same for '70 minus the S code as Ford dropped the 390 in 70. I am sure you could probably pay the dealer to add Eliminator features at the dealership.
It wasn't possible to have the XR7 and Eliminator packages at the same time because they both have specific seats and dash finishes. Both option packages were upgrades from the standard Cougar. The XR7 had specific burled wood finish on the dash and console, and the Eliminators had a blacked out dash. The XR7 has specific leather seats, and the Eliminators had specific high back bucket seats. You would have had to pick one or the other.
Cool Rich! Nice car. Video will be up later in the weekend.
Matt, Thanks man and great to hear that you are in! Good luck and looking forward to your video!
MustangConnection1
Its posted.
***** Mustang Connection1, Contest Response, 1978 Toyota AWESOME video Matt! Great job!
really nice looking cougar! what wheels are those?
Thank you! I think they were Ford FR500 wheels if I recall. So are you in for the throwback video response?
MustangConnection1 Id like to however I'm over in Europe so shipping might not be the easiest. I'll try and get the video done before I leave monday
SaharaMustang That would be great, not sure if I can ship to the EU so if you win I will send you a shirt as soon as they are ready. Sound like a deal?
Give a way? How do I sign up? I need a Cool Mercury! I know it's for the spirits!
I wish I still had the car so no chance on giving it away just the lousy bottle of booze :) Thanks for watching Lawrence, it would be cool to see you do a throwback video response! I wanna put your name in the hat.
No thro back ride for me, do to No Money. Just a gas pig 01 suburban 4X4. I'd rather be Driving a 67 Mercury parklane fast back or convertible Hot Rod, with a few Eliminator type mods like ram air & the 428C and 5speed.
Thanks for the reply and have a wonderful weekend!
Lawrence you can even do one about a car you have always wanted that would be fine with me!
How much did it all cost for restoration
I did most of the labor myself and tried to keep costs down. About 17k all in.
@@MustangConnection1 Thank you. Appreciate it.
@@MustangConnection1 Thanks for sharing .... did you do your own body and paint? Looked like you bought suspension, steering, engine, braking rear axle and suspension. So aside from interior and less rust looks to me like a tropical restoration lots of upgrades, lots of bodywork to get this one back.
I realize this is an old video and that car started out in good shape but I was wondering where I might go to get parts for my 69 Cougar? It's a bit worse than i thought it was.
West Coast Classic Cougar has everything.
can i use a vid i have posted already i have a few of these lol
Nope lol I guess you could just shoot a new intro talking about it and then repost it :) Already had a couple of guys go threw the trouble of shooting and posting so gotta be fresh ....
What brake line kit did you use?
Bronson Burch I used the standard Mustang kit for 69. I didn't change the long line that sits in the tunnel, just cleaned it up.

StrtRodder100 Kenny, Awesome chat video on your first ride, what a great learning experience. My buddy had a 81 Colt GT, basically the same car and it ran forever back in the day. Good luck on the drawing ! As of now 1 in 7 chance, not too bad....
MustangConnection1 nice, glad i made it in by the skin of my teeef , it was a kool car i would get another just because, yup just because lol
"MustangConnection1" Rich here's your video response. ua-cam.com/video/YYi5v3rBW_A/v-deo.html
Gary, Awesome job!!! Great story, thumbs up and good luck!
looks great, but horrible wheels, always sucks when an amazing restoration is hampered by bad wheels
Love this car :) Here's my start to finish vid: ua-cam.com/video/WuyqGDg7V1k/v-deo.html
Hey thanks so much for doing the video, when I click the link it says private so I can't see it.
MustangConnection1 Whoops! try it now :)
SvntyStang Got it, very nice, your 70 convert from start to finish!
ua-cam.com/video/rL1ScZQ8Rl0/v-deo.html Here's my entry I love Agave squeezing's wish me luck.
Nice Job Scott! great Vette and cool video on the resto, subbed and you are officially the first respondent!
MustangConnection1 Thanks Im sorry its not the stang but it just went to a 70 year old grandma that had to have it for her collection. It was a sweet 73 MACH1 CJ a/c 4spd car probably the sweetest mustang i ever had. It will be missed.
scottsinfl No problem, I am a fan of all old cars and the fact it was a DIY brought back from the brink is awesome! Good luck Scott.
