Common Pat, no 289 or 302 for any 69 Cougar. Had to come for this correction. A 69 302 Boss has to be rarest of ALL Cougars. Per Hemmings article. Thanks for featuring this awesome example of Mercury muscle and with the original owner!! But with all due respect you could NOT get a 289 in 1969. The base engine in 1969 Cougars was a 351 Windsor. The fact that THIS car is a 4spd SCJ Drag Pak car sends it into the stratosphere of collectibility- it has special oil cooler and gearing beyond a “regular” Eliminator. I owned a humble ‘69 XR-7 done up with Eliminator body mods and stripes - kind of a “What-if” car. A couple key things that differentiate the Eliminators weren’t mentioned here. One is the Eliminator- only “Camera Case” dash insert, the one above the “Cat”panel. But the MAJOR thing to look out for especially since some people try to pass off clones as legit... all real Eliminators have staggered rear shocks from the factory. MOST fakers are NOT going to go to the trouble of doing the staggered shocks, so take a quick peak underneath- if the shocks aren’t staggered then it’s not the real McCoy. There’s another subtlety having to do with how the trunk lid is set up for the spoiler that most fakers won’t bother with either. The best thing to do with ANY classic Cougar is to ask for the Marti Report (as shown here) find out what it really is (granted there’s been no VIN tampering. Also, if there’s no G in the VIN, it’s NOT a real Boss 302 car. One last observation -this car has the cat nose stripes that is pretty rare. They are usually only seen on non-Eliminator CJ’s... in fact can’t say I’ve ever seen one on an Eliminator. Wonder what the story is on that?? Wow! What a car!!!
When you have a clue what all this things mean you will know what a lucky guy this man is. Cobrajet in his Eliminator. I only want to ride one time in such a car and would be happy

Yes, there were those two. The SOHC was super rare on the street, my friend had one in his Mustang...two versions of the SOHC also 616 hp and 645 hp. The side oiler was similar to the 428 FE, you could just drop a 428 crank into one and in gave you a nice running 454 cid. For real racing, the SOHC was better with a gear drive kit, the cam belt was too long and sloppy for accurate timing on the distant bank.
The Cougars I was told got most of the muscle car V8 motors vs the Fords that came with inline 6s. The classic Cougars were all V8 cars, no sixes at all.
Great car; Do you people know that NHRA has completely eliminated Mercury from the stock and super stock programs !!! Cars like these cannot compete at NHRA events !!!

They never offered a shaker on a cougar. You also could get a scj without a shaker or fresh air induction . Window louvers have nothing at all to do with the scj drag pack option. You can tell that is a scj by the factory oil cooler.,no a/c and 4 sod only.
Hi Kenny Ellis, I like your idea, however this one with a 428, and this should do :-) And here's another. Enjoy, Lou ua-cam.com/video/8zV71PwYSKY/v-deo.html
The 428 SCJ Mustangs were faster than the 429 Boss. The Boss has more potential, but in street trim the SCJ has more low end and tractability. The CJ had less balancing and lower quality pistons and other parts than the SCJ. Not sure a Boss in stock form would be that great. It's like the 426 Street Hemi, the street version was downgraded. All these big motors suck without headers and proper jetting. PS!!! The 429 Boss Mustang had modified shock towers to fit the huge heads. So, if you try to drop one in the Cougar, same problem. Even the 428 was nearly touching. Installing headers was rough, and sooo many bolts...4 per port.
The 428 SCJ was the best stock engine. The 427 side oiler and the SOHC had good potential, but really only in race form and in a prepped car. The cammer was 619-645 hp, but really not good in stock form for the street. My friend overheated his in slow traffic and it seized requiring a full rebuild.
My 69 428 SCJ could exceed the 145 mph speedometer so quick, it was unreal... It could burn rubber at even 80mph, you would literally smoke the front end of a car behind you, leaving rubber particles all over the grill and windshield, I did that once to a cop ;-)
Maybe it's for you peeps that it's luxury version of mustang but i will say its looks, refinement and perfection from every aspect resembles more of Lincoln like it's representing Lincoln..if i have to get a mercury, then i will get this 69 eliminator with having Lincoln V12 in it!! Then it will be beyond perfect! So in short i will slide it's slider towards Lincoln than Ford!
@@loucostabile i shared your video with one of my fb friend name ""Dale Angell"" , he also have youtube channel ...he says Lou is amazing guy does his videos perfect! .. superloved your videos, good for starting day at least for me!!
And that's part of the "charm" of older cars. I think I would consider updating it to a modern fuel injection system. EZ or Holley make great kits that retain the look of a carburetor including the "ram air" vent open/close. Keep the original carb for authenticity, but going to fuel injection virtually eliminates risk of no start.
Beautiful Car ..But Put some decent Radials on it instead of those Crap Polyglas Tires Why some go to such measure just to keep it Vintage is Beyond Me.
A racing car for the road presented by the proud, original owner. Best of all, the jacket still fits !

The Cougars I was told got most of the muscle car V8 motors vs the Fords that came with inline 6s. The classic Cougars were all V8 cars, no sixes at all.
Thank you JR G for sharing your knowledge, Lou
Are those Mustang wheel covers?
Hmmm, I'm not sure. Hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share.
another one of a kind!
kramden A good one, Thanks for viewing, Lou
kramden You mean another Ford product that's 1 of 1?
Imagine that!
Great car; Do you people know that NHRA has completely eliminated Mercury from the stock and super stock programs !!! Cars like these cannot compete at NHRA events !!!
Why?

@@loucostabile thanks ! i love it ! just needs a new carb, headlights and the dashboard recalibrated ! :) ... it has been a Cali car its entire life and came from the factory in San Jose so it is in excellent condition :) ! weatherstripping sucks though so I can't use it when it rains :/
drag pack should have a shaker hood and rear window louvers. 4.30 gear. or 3.90
Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you'll enjoy :-) Lou
They never offered a shaker on a cougar. You also could get a scj without a shaker or fresh air induction . Window louvers have nothing at all to do with the scj drag pack option. You can tell that is a scj by the factory oil cooler.,no a/c and 4 sod only.
@@normanjones5167 Yup. I remember the oil cooler.
What does this do for 0-60?
Not sure.
@@loucostabile Lou: I have relatives near Flint, Michigan. I guess I'm going to have to drive down there with a classic car!
One bad Cougar, wouldnt it had been something with the boss 429 in it?
Witch was faster 428 or 427
The 427 ford was a overhead cam and hemispheric head
Wrong no 427 hemi.. With or without ohc!!
Yes there was a 427 sohc with hemi heads. The cammer. Although you couldn't get it in this car.
No idea.
428 CJ was a bad a$$ engine. In that light weight car, must be a screamer
Bad a$$ engine in a light weight car....just the way we like it :-)
My 69 428 SCJ could exceed the 145 mph speedometer so quick, it was unreal...

Worst nightmare, on video and car won't start!
It happens.
I feel like I’m listening to the goofy Dennis Gage.
I have a Doctor who can help you with that :-)
Beautiful Car ..But Put some decent Radials on it instead of those Crap Polyglas Tires Why some go to such measure just to keep it Vintage is Beyond Me.
