  • CBS2 is focusing on a little-known part of Black history in our area: a planned Black community in the heart of the Hamptons, a beachfront haven, which in the 1940s began to attract middle class families. As CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reports, there is now a passionate effort to protect its unique character.

This is exactly the problem: entrance based on skin color.

Historical districts are very common all over Long Island. Whole parts of towns are protected by these laws. Long Island would be a very different place without them. Many people ( especially middle classes) would not be able to afford to live there.

Is there any historically Latin beaches or white beaches as this seems like inequality and segregation.

We have these beaches because of inequity and segregation. This happens when you have white-only spaces; others are forced to create their own. We weren't allowed at public beaches or pools. These beaches were the only spaces we had to swim. It wasn't an option for us. Some Black folk purchased land, and it was private property, which, in many places, was stolen from Black families or estates. LA is an example. Other historically protected beaches were created as a safe space.

This country was built on the blood, sweat and tears of black people. And today in 2023 they are still not treated with the same rights as "others". They deserve everything they are so-called demanding.
