I REALLLLY enjoyed this video! I love lobster / cray videos especially Australia ones! I’m a 49 yr old grandmother who loves watching these type videos and I have found a new channel to watch here! A big THANK YOU! Watching from Birmingham Alabama USA ❤😊
Very well summed up mate. Some of the easiest and hardest days out there. Positive attitude goes a long way diving for them critters. Glad you are enjoying yourself bud , look after yourself and most importantly don’t turn your back to N2
You wouldn’t believe some of the fish we see up here! It all depends on the weight of the cray and what the market is doing, but roughly we get around $10/kilo.
I’ll bet you see some great sights underwater I used to spearfish for a living on the reef when I was young. Your vids are great insight on what your doing
Eyyy cool! Doin what you love. Used to sail on giant tall ships in the Pacific Northwest life was pretty much exactly yours minus the diving. I miss it a lot, being on ships.
Great vid Ethan. I use Butchers flexable steel mesh gloves for our mini lobsters here in Florida. Really liked this video young man. Stay safe out there. Trying spearfishing this week if the tides co-operate. ✌
A great Australian lobster diving video. Thanks - good watch to see how its done. It was a feather star/crinoid riding the current and looking for a new home. Mate its a work intensive day - hope it pays well.
Man, I loved that clip, your best one ever bro! such a good insight into the day. Whats the pay like and how does it work? im gussing per kg or something?
I dived out of the straits for 12 years, loved Warrior reef. The prawn guys sometimes would do a shot and come and dump a full load on deck of lobsters when they were marching there. They banned that in the 90’s.
Amazing video. I work on a prawn trawler. I reckon it's time for a change. What are the lobster fisheries like yours (0 bycatch ones). Cooktown and Cairns? Maybe Northern Territory aswell?
That’s a crazy work Load mate great to get an insight into what you up to. Look after your self and let me know next time you back so we can head out for a spear!
Hey mate, 16 yr old diver here. I've recently been pondering options for after school. Just wondering if you think lobster diving is a good job to maximise my dive life for a couple of years? If so, how do you get into lobster diving? Cheers (Great video by the way ;)
Hey bro cheers for your comment, what exactly do you mean when you say maximise your dive life? If you're interested shoot MG Kailis Lobster a message on facebook 👍
Gotcha haha it’s doable if you’re willing to invest your time and energy. The lobster diving here all comes down to experience and time in the water learning the lobsters patterns
Great content. Very original. It would be good if you mention the pay side of it eg. pay on a good day vs a bad day? How much the crays sell for vs your cut of that amount?
Thanks Brad! I thought about touching on that but it gets pretty complicated. But pretty much we get a percentage of whatever the market value is at the time and it’s constantly changing. And the more we catch the higher the percentage becomes. The bigger crays tend to have a higher value per kilo than the smaller one too.
I will get around to it eventually, hopefully this summer when I’m back in SA. In the meantime watch some of my kangaroo island videos, they feature some less common species 👍
Thanks for the tip! Those champagne crays in the video I normally leave and is probably the reason why that cave always reloads haha do you know what the reasoning behind that it?
Damn Ethan, that was epic. What's the shelf life for a com cray diver? It must be hard on the body hey? How many weeks a year are you working - is it like a season? Thanks for sharing the video, learnt heaps - Like for Christmas I can buy a razor for you for your chin 🤣🤣Just Joshing, the video was brill. Keep it up, hopefully you will be smashing through 1mill subs over the next 12 months! Dive safe, have fun!👍🤿🙏👍🦞
Thank you Dave! Great question, there are a fair few guys who have been around 10 or so years and still going strong... The season runs for 9 months from January to September and you can really pick and choose how much you wanna work. Last season I did 3 months on, 1 month off and then 3 more months. Hope you've been well and enjoying your orca torch 😂
@@EthanYeo1 Cheers mate, so happy to see you succeeding, just epic stuff. Me and the Torch are off on another adventure next week LOL! Off chasing Blue bone on the Islands again. Then I have to work for the rest of the year to pay off the bills 🤣🤣. I will have to think about some more driving tips for people as I am going up to the boat alone I think LOL! I am really enjoying getting back to editing again, so hopefully I should make you laugh a bit more before the year is out! Go you good thing! 👍🍻🙏
Such a sick job! How does the captain/fishery think about sustainability of these epic locations for generations to come? Do you think thsee spots replenish outside of season or are they constantly decreasing?
Great question mate and something I’ve thought about a fair bit. Up where we work and dive is so remote and there’s very few boats that work the areas. Also majority of the reefs up on the Great Barrier Reef are all marine parks and no fish zones, we’re only allowed to fish a small number of those reefs and I’d say a lot of the crays we catch are overspill from the marine parks. I’d love to dive a marine park one day just to have a look, I can imagine it would be flourishing with marine and cray life. Anyway I don’t think the overall population of the crays is taking a massive hit, however there probably are areas that will take longer to replenish due to constantly being fished. Hopefully that makes sense 🙂
@@EthanYeo1 makes sense. Thanks for the response and that’s good to hear there are some no fish preservation zones. But yeah, I imagine it’s an internal struggle when thinking about spearfishing or harvesting for work while wanting to preserve and share the same epic experiences for our kids. Cheers!
No doubt mate, sustainability and conservation is always on my mind! I’m typically not the biggest fan of commercial fishing methods however with hand harvesting fishing I support it 👍
Hey Ethan, Great video, super interesting to learn about the commercial side of the hobby. You mentioned that you are sometimes out for 2 or more weeks getting crays, and at the start you mentioned checking on the cray health every day. Do you find the health of the crays deteriorates over the few weeks? and if you do have concerns about a crayfish what do you do? throw it back to the sea so it can hopefully recover itself? or is there some sort of care you can give it yourself to make sure it lasts the trip? Or maybe just freeze and wrap like you mentioned for the defect crays? Cheers!
Hey Dylan thanks for watching 🙂 The health of the crays I would say don’t typically deteriorate over the trip, as I normally only keep the strong and healthy crays in my tanks. If a cray is looking like it’s not gonna make it I’ll just freeze it. But I do have a seperate tank where I keep my weaker crays eg. Crays that are about to shed or have just shedded and have a soft shell. Hope that answers your question 👍
Hey mate it really depends on how much we’re catching. The pay has recently changed, if you search on facebook MG Kailis Lobster they’ve just posted the new salary brackets based on catch!
