For people mentioning teutons very passionately. Yes teutons are good vs franks but usually what happens is this: Early game franks have slight lead and better eco. Mid game it evens out if franks dont get further ahead. Late gmae is hand canons halbs and bombard canon and both civs have a very even composition. Its a decent matchup but not a counter pick imo. Extra armor on knights in castle barely matters and paladin for either side is rarely an option in imp.
Saracens should also have had a place in Honourable mention being a great camel civ with good archer line along with mamelukes are one of the best counters to franks and they also get bombard canons
Yep! Saracens and Berbers have a lot of similar options for playing against Franks. Saracen camels have higher HP, while Berber camels are cheaper and regenerate HP with the UT. Saracens can field FU arbs. Their CA can get Parthian Tactics, but that's not as important. Saracens have access to all monastery techs. Berbers lack Block Printing and Sanctity.
There are some games where I wiped out Franks paladin with Mameluke/Heavy Camel combo. The tricky part is to reach that late game stage and to have enough gold for that action, but if you do, I can not even see some other civ even beating it.

I was thinking of Tatars personally. The sheep bonus gives you that early game eco bonus and you have the smoothest possible transition into cav archers which Franks have trouble stopping thanks to free Thumb Ring, plus the option of camels if needed.

I have played against every civ many times, and the one thing I feel the Franks does better then anyone is having good units at my base followed up by a castle in my face, before I have massed enough to deal with it. I always die early against them. I should also add that i'm low elo, so this might not be the case in higher elo
@@HeraAgeofEmpires2 I think it's about the implementation of the strategy! at lower levels at least, it is much easier to do a scouts -> knights build, than to do some scouts -> CAs or scouts -> Mangudai build! at least in my games vs. Franks (~1150 ELO), I've noticed that I just lose the early game scout fight, reach castle age later and then just get wrecked by 2+2/2+2 knights all up in my eco 11

The free farm upgrades and essentially free Bloodlines make it so you can get knights out and still afford to mix in pikes or elite skirmishers in case the enemy has counter units and then they don't know what to do.
Yeah they r not but in the lategame it doesnt make much difference anyway rgt since bracer is more important since u wont be fighting archers with ur skirms anyway.

Absolutly agreed. Their eco might hold them back but option wise they are among the best civs to counter franks. I mean how could franks ever deal with elite mameluks?
Saracens are solid for sure but i honestly think they get out paced as the game goes on. U def have good chances early game though as u mentioned and late game options are amazing for them. Decent option for sure
Mongol vs frank was easier a few patches ago before the mangudai speed reduction because you could hit and run less distance before firing but still very stronks
11:17 my first ever chat on Hera's Twitch was asking this very question! how to beat Mongols as Franks!! and you did mention that it's *very* hard and talked about this timing where one should get to Paladins before the Elite Mangudai are massed up!! so, I already knew the answer about who the #1 civ was going to be! :) :D all that being said, I find the Franks gameplay to be just so smooth that I've lost to them multiple times even after having a good civ advantage, like with Indians, Tatars, even Mongols 11 I think at my level (1100-1200), the Franks gameplay implementation is just smoother than that of any of their camel/cavalry archer counters!
I want to suggest Burmese here as a dark horse. Cheap monk upgrades are fantastic vs knights, your elephants outscale them. If they try to go halberdier your halberdiers and champions are stronger, and you also have siege engineer bombard cannons. Even the Arambai can be strong versus throwing axemen. Burmese get flak for their archer civ matchups, but against a melee focused Civ like franks they are much stronger than people expect.

Tatars is a good counter pick to Franks too. Both CA and camels are fully upgraded and counter franks. It's almost like the Mongols but with fully upgraded camels, more tanky CA, and you don't have to make a castle.

I am surprised not seeing the bohemians in this list as to me, they have a counter to franck s composition in any situation with their good spears/pikes, chemistry xbow, monks and houfnice. I really do not see what franks can do in this matchup
Bohemians bonuses kicking up rather slow, Franks have better eco bonus that would have led to better feudal agression into faster castle time than Bohemians. Solid option but does not necessarily counter Franks, especially not after removal of discounted monastery.
Question: what should I do as huns against berbers? Recently I had this matchup and I couldn’t think of anything. They have camal archer so cav archer is not that good, or at least I couldn’t make it work, they also have cheaper stable units. What strategy shoukd I try next time if I'm in this matchup as the huns?
It's a rough one. You lose late game, so you need to play to your strengths beforehand. Your two best powerspikes are as follows: 1/ early feudal (stables bonus, better early eco, Berbers only have the fast vils). Outmass scouts, add archers, don't think about clicking up, finish the game in feudal or at least force multiple towers. If Berbers has an open map and cannot fully wall, you can win. 2/ early castle age. If Berbers full walls and has towers, you have a window of opportunity to kill with 3/4 range CA. Canel archers require a castle and need time to mass. Sell stone, stay 1tc, add a SW forward and rams to smash castles, and don't bother with imp.

Yep gotta finish early. Feudal age archers into crossbows and knights should be good enough if you win feudal, not convinced that 3/4 range cav archer is good. I would rather have more knights and monks, especially as gold collects fast. Also you can collect relics with the map control and castle drop. Try to harass their stones so they don't have good defensive options. You may need to take it to imp just to get trebs to kill but castle age feudal-castle age should be a long fight
For the purpose of this Hindustanis and Gurjaras are kinda the same civ. The eco is good, the Camels are busted and they counter Halbs with Skirms/HC or their Unique unit. From the Archer civs I think Ethiopians might be even better than Britons. Higher DPS Xbows, free Pikeman make it way easier to beat Franks where they are strongest.
@@JacobArvizu Japaneses has FU Arbalest and Cav Archer, These 2 units shred Throwing Axeman. Franks should try to finish Japaneses in early game. In late game, there is no civ that worse than Franks. Franks's power stems from early game eco bonuses.
What do you think of going Mongol CA before or instead of Mangudai to mass easier? Is it an option or is it just better to go arbs if you want and easier to mass unit or want a smoother transition

At lower Elo, microing Mangudai is very tricky. One look away and cavaliers surround your army and you can't run away.....Melee units are much easier to control at lower elo
I really struggled on Arena to deal with Franks. I was Malians last game and went a little heavier in scouts (created 2 more) and got relic advantage bacause of that. My imp was a minute later than his but transitioned too late to arbs and he went axemen. Do you standard go arbs vs franks on Arena when that is an option? Any tips on how to handle that matchup?
Im curious. I was thinking about Slavs on number 1 (druzinha halba + super armored Boyards) why are they not even mentioned even in honorable mentions?
One i really like against Franks is Khmer because i can get extra greedy because of the house garrisoning and get a super fast castle time and by then have knights faster than them. Then my eco kicks in and i just have to stay ahead keeping pressure, and if needed finish with 80 farms hussars (Hera's favorite 11) But i know this doesn't work as well at higher elos.
I thought Hindustanis were going to be at #1 with their impérial camels keeping paladins in check and hand cannins with +2 rangé dealing with halbs and axe throwers.
I dont understand how people lose to cavalry civs, franks included, just MAA rush him, get supplies and overwhelm with infantry lol To me, archer civs are probably the hardest match ups to face
I actually do this with Goths vs Cavalry Civs. Double barrack, then one archery range and some Skirms when they try to make archers. Easy win, at my level, of course.
I hate to say it but MAA arent a solid option in feudal age. Archers so counter them to good. So the main options for feudal aggression are archers and scouts. MAA are only viable because you can create them in dark age and thus you can hit with them very early.
MAA rush is too slow for Franks 19 pop scout rush unless you have Celts or something. Even then if the scouts are out fast they shouldn't deal too much damage. That being said Franks have plenty of counter options so the winrate is weird imo
No Hera. Teutons are Frank’s greatest counter CIV, Teutonic Knights beat the cav of Franks and the throwing axemen Deal no damage against them. Furthermore, Teutonic halbs get +2 armor which is insane.
Goths with 25-35% cheaper spears and halbs, and faster unit creation time means they can comfortably mass anti cavalry. Meanwhile mixing in man at arms for offence and skirms for anti archers. If Goths survive the early Scout and knight pressure, they will smash Franks.
@@boni6242 Hand Cannoneers seem like the best counter. Range and high damage. Plus the cheapness of swordsmen means they can be used as a meatshield while the HC do their work.

I guess you lack the dark / early feudal bonuses so you will be on the back foot. From mid castle age onward, if you know your way around market abuse, you are in a good spot though.

By the way Turks might be the worst against Franks. A Frankish player with 150 elo less can defeat a Turkish player. If Frankish at least allow Turkish to mass some cav archers with sipahi and also some light cav, then it might help but Turks have a slow early game, Turks best units all be massed in late castle, Turks dont have halbs or elite skirmishers.
Dude are U joking?!? How could you not list teutons??? With an oppressive win rate of 58% they beat franks at 1650 elo+. In my opinion it is an easy first place for them. But Hera did neither include them in the top 5 or in the honorable mentions. He has a massiv blind spot there in my opinion.
Yea and Spanish. Conqs can deal with cav pretty good and Frank skirms are not the best. I think Franks can easily beat the Mongols with a heavy castle age push because while Frank's get free heavy plow mongols castle age is pretty generic and pikes and camels don't cut it specially if Frank's mix in his own pikes monks or cheap castle drops

if you look at the pattern, he picked the civs that have a dark age bonus to compete with franks's strong start. Teutons definitely are a good pick vs franks imo, but i don't think they are better than the top 5 mentioned here
@@wensel1985 rushing TK definitly isnt the play at high elo. But even if franks go for their options there is nothing they can do better than teutons from Castle age onwards. Kinghts/paldains? Teutons knight line is better. Infantery? Dont even try. Siege? Teutons have better siege as well. Get an eco lead? Teuton bonus is stronger. Handcanoniers? Enjoy SO with ironglades and SE. The only option are the cheap castles and thats it. High elo or not franks get countered by teutons.

Correction: Gurjara Skirmishers are not fully upgraded as they're missing ring archer armor.

Yeah, they used to have a base speed of 1.45 tiles vs 1.4 after the change. Basically in line with other similar cav archer units.

2/ early castle age. If Berbers full walls and has towers, you have a window of opportunity to kill with 3/4 range CA. Canel archers require a castle and need time to mass. Sell stone, stay 1tc, add a SW forward and rams to smash castles, and don't bother with imp.
@@lbridet Yeah that sounds like a good idea, huns excel at agressive strats since t heyre stablees work faster and their ca are easier to mass, plus not needing to build houses makes it easier to focus on your army
Yep gotta finish early. Feudal age archers into crossbows and knights should be good enough if you win feudal, not convinced that 3/4 range cav archer is good. I would rather have more knights and monks, especially as gold collects fast. Also you can collect relics with the map control and castle drop. Try to harass their stones so they don't have good defensive options. You may need to take it to imp just to get trebs to kill but castle age feudal-castle age should be a long fight
For the purpose of this Hindustanis and Gurjaras are kinda the same civ. The eco is good, the Camels are busted and they counter Halbs with Skirms/HC or their Unique unit.
From the Archer civs I think Ethiopians might be even better than Britons. Higher DPS Xbows, free Pikeman make it way easier to beat Franks where they are strongest.
Only reason i disagree with ethi is that they can be weaker to siege push but overall they are aolid too
Question from a noob player. Wouldn’t Japanese be a good counter too? They have solid early game and the strongest halbs if I’m not mistaken.

Throwing Axeman will counter the Halbs and they don't have a great answer for that.
@@JacobArvizu Japaneses has FU Arbalest and Cav Archer, These 2 units shred Throwing Axeman. Franks should try to finish Japaneses in early game. In late game, there is no civ that worse than Franks. Franks's power stems from early game eco bonuses.

What do you think of going Mongol CA before or instead of Mangudai to mass easier? Is it an option or is it just better to go arbs if you want and easier to mass unit or want a smoother transition

At lower Elo, microing Mangudai is very tricky. One look away and cavaliers surround your army and you can't run away.....Melee units are much easier to control at lower elo

I really struggled on Arena to deal with Franks. I was Malians last game and went a little heavier in scouts (created 2 more) and got relic advantage bacause of that. My imp was a minute later than his but transitioned too late to arbs and he went axemen. Do you standard go arbs vs franks on Arena when that is an option? Any tips on how to handle that matchup?
Im curious. I was thinking about Slavs on number 1 (druzinha halba + super armored Boyards) why are they not even mentioned even in honorable mentions?
One i really like against Franks is Khmer because i can get extra greedy because of the house garrisoning and get a super fast castle time and by then have knights faster than them. Then my eco kicks in and i just have to stay ahead keeping pressure, and if needed finish with 80 farms hussars (Hera's favorite 11)
But i know this doesn't work as well at higher elos.

I actually do this with Goths vs Cavalry Civs. Double barrack, then one archery range and some Skirms when they try to make archers. Easy win, at my level, of course.
Cav Players can also Open Range, or add a Range if you go infantry.
I hate to say it but MAA arent a solid option in feudal age. Archers so counter them to good. So the main options for feudal aggression are archers and scouts. MAA are only viable because you can create them in dark age and thus you can hit with them very early.
MAA rush is too slow for Franks 19 pop scout rush unless you have Celts or something. Even then if the scouts are out fast they shouldn't deal too much damage. That being said Franks have plenty of counter options so the winrate is weird imo

No Hera. Teutons are Frank’s greatest counter CIV, Teutonic Knights beat the cav of Franks and the throwing axemen Deal no damage against them. Furthermore, Teutonic halbs get +2 armor which is insane.

Goths with 25-35% cheaper spears and halbs, and faster unit creation time means they can comfortably mass anti cavalry. Meanwhile mixing in man at arms for offence and skirms for anti archers.
If Goths survive the early Scout and knight pressure, they will smash Franks.

Plus the cheapness of swordsmen means they can be used as a meatshield while the HC do their work.

I dont agree with britons being one of the top 5 counter civ. They dont even have thumbring. Its literaly doesnt matter that much about range
the range just helps u not die to mangonels in castle age and not die to skirms at all
what about saracens and thiere higher hp camels and mamlukes? since 1999 saraces was the officiall ftank paladin counter even before bloodlines was release... missing them even in the honorable mention is heartbreaking...
I guess you lack the dark / early feudal bonuses so you will be on the back foot. From mid castle age onward, if you know your way around market abuse, you are in a good spot though.

By the way Turks might be the worst against Franks. A Frankish player with 150 elo less can defeat a Turkish player.
If Frankish at least allow Turkish to mass some cav archers with sipahi and also some light cav, then it might help but
Turks have a slow early game, Turks best units all be massed in late castle, Turks dont have halbs or elite skirmishers.

In my opinion it is an easy first place for them. But Hera did neither include them in the top 5 or in the honorable mentions.

Yea and Spanish. Conqs can deal with cav pretty good and Frank skirms are not the best. I think Franks can easily beat the Mongols with a heavy castle age push because while Frank's get free heavy plow mongols castle age is pretty generic and pikes and camels don't cut it specially if Frank's mix in his own pikes monks or cheap castle drops
I thought the same and was expecting Teutons and Berbers to be number 1 or 2, but maybe in super high elo it is not as simple as Do Teutonic Knights and GG, I guess Hand cannoneer + Paladin is better than Teutonic + Paladin
if you look at the pattern, he picked the civs that have a dark age bonus to compete with franks's strong start. Teutons definitely are a good pick vs franks imo, but i don't think they are better than the top 5 mentioned here
@@wensel1985 rushing TK definitly isnt the play at high elo. But even if franks go for their options there is nothing they can do better than teutons from Castle age onwards. Kinghts/paldains? Teutons knight line is better.
Infantery? Dont even try.
Siege? Teutons have better siege as well.
Get an eco lead? Teuton bonus is stronger.
Handcanoniers? Enjoy SO with ironglades and SE.
The only option are the cheap castles and thats it.
High elo or not franks get countered by teutons.
