We always say that Quraan has the capacity to speak to different kind of personalities, different kind of minds. It has different keys for each type of personalities. This is true at least to my experience. Some people want a fixed catalogue to follow, that's enough for them, some others want to be convened in a philosophical level, and so on...Islam can speak to all those who want to be guided, each by the way that is suitable for their nature(personality). Otherwise it wouldn't be a universal religion, it would be a religion for a small sect. Quraan says: "And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) not but as a mercy for the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)."

However as far as I know before you reach Makrifat you have to know Syariah (rules ) first. Second, Tarekat (journey) and the third is Hakekat (basic/essence). All four can be learned simultineously. This UA-cam channel that you run right now is part of the tarekat/the journey.

So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow (only) that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah, and seeking its Ta’wil, but none knows its Ta’wil except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: “We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.” And none receive admonition except men of understanding.) (They say): “Our Lord! I just finished watching the turkish drama series "Yunus Emre: The Journey of Love" on youtube. I shed many tears, fascinated by the Islam mysticism and Yunus Emre's internal war with his nafs and enlightenment at the end, with the guidance of his Murshid (mentor) Tapduk Emre. After finishing the series, I started reading Yunus Emre's poems, which, in my opinion as deep as Rumi's. I dont know how many people i have recommended this series since yesterday. Its just a masterpiece when it comes to teaching how beautiful, peaceful, deep Islam is when it comes to human soul, ego and relationship with others, Allah, and ultimately becoming nothing and everything at the end..
According to some, Rumi (Mewlana) once said "In every divine destination I reached, I came across traces of that Turkmen. I just couldn't get past him." That Turkmen is believed to be Dervish Yunus..

To say Islam is just a religion you limit it. Islam is the way of life, in every aspect. So no matter from which angle you choose to see it, you'll find a meaning, I think that's what Shaikh Hamza Yusuf wants to say. If you are a sincere warrior, that path will lead you to Islam, if you're a sincere philosopher, that path will lead you to Islam, if you're a sincere scientist, that path will lead you to Islam, if you're a sincere artist, that path will lead you to Islam, if you're a sincere human being, in all different places of the world, in all the different circumstances, everything will make sense and lead you to Islam! Islam is one, but the tests aren't one, so because every single life is unique, there are unique interpretations of Islam, warrior aspect, family aspect, emotional spiritual aspect and so on.

Humza Yusuf is a very learned person. So if you ask what is true Islam. Study as hard as he did. I call him one of the top Scholars I know of. He was the first person to start a top class muslim college in USA named Zaytuna College. He is Irish & since converting to Islam. He spent most of his life studying not only Islam but different groups of muslims around the world. His knowledge is vast on Islam. He likes to understand things and expresses them well. As the President of his college he takes close interest on his students thus his students come out as good scholars too. I like watching all his videos, it's great learning. He is such a good example of a true muslim that even his parents converted to Islam before they died. His sister also converted.

    Assalaamu aleikum Bobby,
I appreciate your videos and you sharing your thought process in your yourney.
Regarding your questions about "different interpretations": What Scheikh Hamza is talking about is Hadith to specific topics. Some of these can lead to an islamic ruling that is more strict while others can be more lenient. For e.g. the issue if touched by the salive of a dog requires you to wash or change your clothing has different rulings. 3 of the 4 Madhabs require it while one does not. All are basing theire rulings on the same Ahadith, however the methodology is different. Sometimes the emphasis on what is the general case and what is the exceptional case can make all the difference. In this case we have opposing rulings on the same matter that opens up the diversity that Scheikh Hamza is talking about.
HOWEVER: These matters do not pertain to the Aqidah, or the main theological aspects of Islam. It is about the day to day issues that is governed by Islam.
    I hope that helps.

That is what Imam Malik said: Al-Istiwa' is Unknown, belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is heresy. So his words - may God have mercy on him - indicated three matters: the first: affirming the attributes without interpretation, the second: delegating the quality, and the third: the predecessors’ dislike of delving into the verses of the attributes. The position of Imam Malik on this subject is accurate : Istiwa is known, the how is unknown, and asking about it is an innovation. (Allah A'lam, Allah knows best). Istawa has multiple meanings, just like any word in the Quran (not just sit). However, we do not know how Allah Istawa. We believe in it since it is Allah who has mentioned it, yet we are limited on how.
Just like when Allah speaks about the angels, we have no idea on how they look, all we know is what Allah has told us about them. For instance, they have wings... What kind of wings, are they feathered, are the like a plane, are they??? Angels have wings, that's it, that'a all. Heaven and Hell, Allah has spoken about them in long and in large, yet we still can't imagine Heaven's bliss and Hell's torment.
Al-Ghayb (the unknowable) is what we believe in without being able to substantiate it with out limited means as a Human.
    May Allah guide us all.

Did you know what Sheikh Hamza Yusuf meant? He didn't mean ascribing image or dimensionality to Allah. He meant without asking how it is meant. Let the verse pass is it came without giving it an interpretation and this was the position of the earliest Muslims. The word istiwa has multiple meanings like to subjugate, conquer, preserve, protect, and exaltation. These befit his majesty but the meaning is unknown so we consign the specific meaning to Allah and believe in the meaning he intended, not take the literal meaning and attribute direction, place, movement and image to God's attributes, astagfirullah.

      Untill you understand unadulterated truth...
"You will understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in you."
      Oh, if muslims would understand...
Through Christ, God gave us back the divine life mankind lost in its fall. Hence the divine healing miracles and casting out of demons, we experience up to this day.
To not see God in Christ.... is impossible.
"The Father and I are one!"
"If you see Me, you see the Father!"
"Don't you believe that the Father is IN Me?"
"ALL (!) AUTHORITY in heaven and earth has been given to Me!". (Only God has all authority).
At healing the paralytic: "Your sins have been forgiven you!" (Only God can forgive sins).
"I am THE (not a) light of the world"......: God.
"I have come to give you Zoë (=divine life) in abundance".... Only God can give Zoë life.
"I am from above, you are from beneath. You are from this world, I am not from this world".....
      Etc, etc, etc,
When He explained these things, healed the sick, casted out demons, raised the dead, controlled nature for 3 years, they all worshipped Him as God/Messiah.... except for the critical scholars and farisees!
He NEVER said: "Don't worship Me, I am just a prophet!". The Jews wanted to stone Him because: "You claim to be God".
So Jesus is God manifesting in Human form. Period. Glad He did. So now we finally know the sayings and actions of God.
      Next step.
To not see Jesus bringing the divine life of the ages back to you-manity.... is impossible.
"I will send Holy Spirit, the same as Me, He will be IN you, guide you into truth and give you explosive power to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, etc, etc"
"Follow Me, the miracles I do, you will do too"
      "God is IN you"
"The Kingdom of God is IN you"
"He who meets you, meets Me".
      "You and I are one"
"You will understand that the Father is IN Me and I am in you"
"See, I have given you power over all the forces of the enemy"
"I have come to give you Zoë (=divine life) in abundance!"
      Etc, etc, etc.
Hence the divine healing miracles and casting out of demons with His first 12+72 friends.
As i understood these things, i experienced healing miracles and the casting out of demons already thousands of times and many other true believers do too. Yay!
Conclusion of Paul after having revelation and healing all on Malta: "Jesus, the exact image of the invisible God. The fullness of deity dwells in Jesus bodily" and you have been made complete IN Him (the last Adam), who is the head of every principality and power".
John (who had seen, touched, heard Jesus and walked in the same power and love): "the invisible God manifested in human form, in Christ and now in us".
Thomas having revelation saying to Jesus: "My Lord and My God!". Jesus being God did NOT correct Him.
      Etc, etc, etc.
His life totally proves He is God in human form. Begotten by the Spirit of God, filled with the spirit of God, healing all, raising the dead, casting out demons, controlling nature, raised from the dead, pouring out His Spirit for us to be indwelled by to be empowered to heal the sick and cast out demons, etc, etc, etc.
Way to much to degrade Him to "just a prophet".
So... Jesus is the manifestation of God in a human body.... "the Son" of God. He came to take the alienation away mankind got trapped in after the fall. He came to give us back the divine life Adam/mankind lost in its fall.
Because of this fall, a perfect Holy sacrifice had to be made. That is what God did in Christ! It shows His deep, pure, affectionate passion from Him to you/His creation, to restore you back to origin: Christlikeness. Walking in divine power and unselfish divine love.
Jesus walked flawless. Muhammed on the other hand....
Muhammed came after Jesus. He unfortunately never understood God's resolve for mankind's fall, wrote another story, called it the only truth, cutting of the real truth, leading millions astray from their godly identity in Christ. Heartbreaking.
But for those who take Jesus for who He is and ask to be filled by His godly Holy Spirit.....: divine life. Tangible presence of God, healings, demons running for cover, etc. Just as with His first 12+72 friends.
God will make you experience the full (godly) Life made possible through Holy Spirit.
So don't be afraid to leave islam. God can only be found in/through Jesus Christ.
Ask Him to fill you with His/God's Holy Spirit so He can guide you into truth and transform your life. You and God/Jesus are finally one again. He will open your eyes and give you Zoë (divine life). You will be growing into Him in all things. The life you see in Him and His first 12+72 friends.
I experience it since 25 years and so will you.

I always saw the throne (as do all muslims I guess) as a mighty creation, something maybe even greater than the universe/s or the heavens. But it's only that. a creation which is still dependent. Asking what Allah meant by"Istawa" "face" "hand" is like asking how is Allah all hearing or all seeing? We can't imagine, comprehend or rationalize that. I don't think any Muslim when he reads for example that "Allah's hand is above their hands" interpret this as anything other than Allah is with them/ supports them.

No eminent Muslim scholar has ever said that, nor the Quran, nor the prophet. God himself time and time again says that He is "Above the throne" that He is "Above the skies" that the Angels "Ascend to him everyday". Up, Up, Up. For you to come and say "don't mind the Quran and Hadith, but my philosophy says He is everywhere and nowhere" is really dangerous. We, as Muslims, say that God's attributes (knowledge, and power...etc) is everywhere, but his essence (not to be mixed with English physical essence) is above the skies, in Heaven, as He himself told us, and as the prophet conveyed. We do not borrow concepts, we do not go by our whims, we say what God said about Himself, and God knows best.

I think Hamza Yusuf's knowledge and wisdom is on a different plane far, far above most common people and in the ranks of special scholars. It is for this reason, I as a common Muslim (without the decades of devoted study) cant understand the depth of what he is saying. Perhaps he finds it difficult to explain what he understands in a language you and I can understand. In any case, when you have had the privilege of being in the presence of the great scholars, it only goes to show how little we know. I mean come on think about it; how can I compare myself with an opinion with the little time I spent studying Islam to a scholar who has devoted his life, every day, for decades researching and studying Islam from the great scriptures of the past. Even then they say they know nothing. Yet I profess to know more ? Nay, it is our own ignorance that shows when we question these great scholars who have transcended their knowledge above what can be explained to mere common man. Your video on the Golden Age of Islam had Philosophy as one trench of Islam. Philosophically speaking, the common Muslim is unlettered and blind. So when Hamza speaks and the great scholars speak, we should listen and contemplate because they are relating and make simple of a gem of wisdom to us simple Muslims. The knowledge of Islam is so vast it will never be completed.

The earliest Muslims let the verse pass it came without delving into the interpretation. They didn't interpret it let alone give it a literal meaning which is another form of ta'wil and instead they consigned the meaning to Allah and believed it in the meaning Allah intended whilst negating tashbih and ta'til. They took the middle path between extreme literalists and extreme rationalists. Salafis misunderstand the Salaf when they said "without asking how". They mean without asking how it is meant not as in modality is unknown. That was the methodology of anthropromorphists.

@@wiseg.s5872 I'll respond to your points bit by bit and I hope you wake up from this tashbih by attributing creation to Allah (SWT), astagifurllah.
I knew you would try to bring the hadith regarding the slave girl but this hadith doesn't prove your creed because she said "in the sky". No mention of Allah's throne or istiwaa, that is the Wahhabi taweel here. Also, did you know there are many narrations surrounding this slave girl? Please listen with an open mind and read through for what I'm about to say.
The literal sense of being "in the sky" would mean that Allah is actually in one of His creatures, for the sky is something created. It is not permissible to believe that Allah indwells or occupies any of His creatures, as the Christians believe about Jesus, or the Hindus about their avatars.
What is obligatory for a human being to know is that Allah is ghaniyy or absolutely free from need of anything He has created. He explicitly says in surat al-Ankabut of the Qur'an:
"Verily Allah is absolutely free of need of anything in the worlds" (Qur'an 29:6).
Which scholar knew Sahih Muslim better than anyone? That's right Imam Al Nawawi (RA) who made the best commentary on Sahih Muslim with many volumes so let's see his commentary on this.
"This is one of the "hadiths of the attributes," about which scholars have two positions. The first is to have faith in it without discussing its meaning, while believing of Allah Most High that "there is nothing whatsoever like unto Him" (Qur'an 42:11), and that He is exalted above having any of the attributes of His creatures. The second is to figuratively explain it in a fitting way, scholars who hold this position adducing that the point of the hadith was to test the slave girl: Was she a monotheist, who affirmed that the Creator, the Disposer, the Doer, is Allah alone and that He is the one called upon when a person making supplication (du'a) faces the sky--just as those performing the prayer (salat) face the Kaaba, since the sky is the qibla of those who supplicate, as the Kaaba is the qibla of those who perform the prayer--or was she a worshipper of the idols which they placed in front of themselves? So when she said, In the sky, it was plain that she was not an idol worshipper." (Sahih Muslim bi Sharh al-Nawawi. 18 vols. Cairo 1349/1930. Reprint (18 vols. in 9). Beirut: Dar al-Fikr, 1401/1981, 5.24)
There are also multiple narrations surrounding this slave girl and it needs to be explained in conjunction. You can't just misinterpreted one hadith and sweep other narrations under the carpet. All the hadith versions needs to be mentioned so we can explain this encounter between our prophet (PBUH) and the slave girl. Let's see other heavyweight scholars and how they interpreted the sign language.
In the Ibn Hibban (RA) narration it says: Who is your lord?
In Imam Malik (RA) narration it says: Do you testify there is no God but Allah?
Other narrations say she was deaf, mute or both that is why she pointed the sky for answer.
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (RA) has said of the various versions of this hadith, "There is great contradiction in the wording" When a hadith has numerous conflicting versions, there is a strong possibility that it has been related merely in terms of what one or more narrators understood (riwaya bi al-ma'na), and hence one of the versions is not adequate to establish a point of creed (aqeeda).”

The thing is that the four madhab imaams accepted each other en the proof they had. They did not choose their own islaam. Right no Al lot of people chose a madhab or a sect that fits their nafs.
If Allah swt ment to mean that we can use our intellect en have filosofe thoughts, He swt could have done that. The fact the Allah swt did not tell that, is a fact.
The filosofers in islaam came later. There were no filosofers among the Sahaba. Let a alone soufies.
Let not be trapped by the beautiful words of the Sheikh. If Allah swt says He is above his Thone, than that is a fact. Everybody else that is telling something else needs to show prove. If there is no prove there is only air. Just like filosofers.

Hamza Yusuf likes to manipulate the truths and by doing so ends up denying the clear cut verses. The verse says Allah is upon His throne. That’s exactly what the verse means. If Allah says it He knows best where He actually is, who’s Hamza Yusuf to say that “no actually Allah can’t be above His throne because if He is then that would mean He’s limited by time and space”
Who said that by affirming that Allah is upon His throne as He clearly and explicitly stated in the Quran, that means he’s limited by time and space ??? Nobody makes that claim that Hamza and the deviant sect that he follows (which started in the second century of Islam and was strongly rebuked and declared to be heretics) keep arguing against
If Allah says he’s upon His throne then we affirm that He is exactly as He said. However when it comes to the “how that’s possible?” That’s when we say we don’t know. Allah told us He is on His throne but didn’t tell us how and we cannot comprehend the how of the matter
Denying the fact that Allah is on His throne is belying Allah who explicitly said He was on His throne and belying Allah is blasphemy that removes you from the religion of Islam
Bobby trust your gut about Hamza Yusuf. You already alluded to how you feel that Hamza Yusuf is trying to dilute Islam essentially and seems to be “anything goes”

Hamza Yusuf adheres to the Maliki school of Fiqh. He comes from a sound tradition. Problem with salafis and the literalist type is that they don't belong to any tradition as it may go against the notion of following the Quran and Sunnah directly- which can be dangerous. Following a tradition means having a trail of understanding of Quran and Sunnah.

second, you have a wrong idea about salafi , it is not about "litteral" interpretation , it's more deep , there are verses on quran salafi don't take the literal meaning of course ... Salafi is basically how the compagnon of the prophets understood those verses ...
I think you're far away from being able to judge who is wrong , who is right , you need deep deep studies on salafi , you can start about seeing Ibn Taymiyah arguments about the 3arsh ( throne )

I'm glad your asking these questions Bobby and seeking the truth. The great thing about Islam is that there are fundamentals in terms of beliefs and practises including haram and halal which are set in stone and clear cut, only fools or deviants would argue with. These are the things that cannot be changed or interpreted differently. Then there are aspects of rulings within different situations which people can understand and interpret differently but they do not change the fundamentals and essence of the religion. The differences are only smaller issues usually related to actions of worship for example where to place the hands in prayers and how to apply rulings in exceptional circumstances etc. Some ignorant people will argue about even these things and make them bigger issues. And then there are deviant sects who stray away from the religion with coruppt and deviant beliefs and practises.

No it won't, Bobby. God said He has a face, Hands, Feet, and other Attributes. We take it as it is. You can never rationalize God's Attributes to himself. Hence, you will deny them, and bend the text to suit your interpretation. And that would inevitably lead to sectarianism, which is the reality...

May Allah bless Hamza Yusuf for his efforts and for helping people get closer to Islam. That being said, I absolutely do not appreciate how he misrepresents the Salafi position whilst everyone knows he's talking about Salafis. We affirm what Allah has said about Himself. It's simple as that! We make it very clear that He (The Most High) is nothing like his creation and He is greater than anything we can fathom. So, when Allah says he has these attributes, we affirm them although we will never entirely understand how they work or how it is. To suggest that we've limited Allah is unfair because no Salafi scholar has denied Allah's greatness. So, we affirm and submit! We might not entirely understand and we're comfortable with that instead of making things up that is not found in the Qur'an and sunnah. (sidenote: Although I said 'we', I don't necessarily identify as a Salafi because I do not behave like one lol May Allah guide us all, I just believe their aqeedah is the correct position and I agree with it)
EDIT: The last point you made Bobby about God "sitting" -- The Salafi position is that Allah is above His throne*...we just don't know how. He (The Most-Wise)is nothing like His creation. It's that simple. We don't go further by saying "it's symbolic and not literal." Those words are not apart of the tradition so we don't affirm that. I hope that makes sense. May Allah bless you and guide us all towards the Truth!

As for Hamzah yusuf talking about the throne of Allah. He is delving into deviant beliefs. The people of sunnah accept that Allah is above His throne in a manner which suits His majesty without questioning how or without trying to reinterpreted it to mean something else. We don't say that Allah is limited or similar to any of the creation. We just accept what has been revealed to us. None of the early Muslims that followed the Prophet ever questioned or doubted these verses about Allah being above His throne or Allah having a face or hands. We can't deny these attributes of His but at the same time we don't liken them to the creation in anyway or know how they are. These are things which the human mind cannot even comprehend. Hamzah yusuf follows imam malik in fiqh (jurisprudence) but goes against his beliefs in the names and attributes of Allah. He follows the asharee beliefs which are similar to the mu'tazila and jahmiyyah (early deviant sects) who were influenced by Greek philosophy and aristotle etc. This stuff goes very deep.

At 11:00, Bobby you ask "how does he know?"
It's because when you study the seerah in more depth, you learn about the Prophet's different attitudes at different times.
During the golden age, giants of scholars would have opposing views on different issues.
Today, weaker scholars have a more narrow and hardline view than those giants on different issues.
It's what drove the Arabs to fight against their Turkish brothers in WW1 leading to their sorry state today. "He's different Islam makes him a kafir, it's legal to fight and kill him".
