  • A few Impressions from the Flensburger Dampf-Rundum 2022 and the four participating Steam Ships. Sadly, there aren't much Land-based Steam Engines participating, with only three Traction Engines
    Ein paar Impressionen vom Flensburger Dampf-Rundum 2022 und den vier teilnehmenden Dampfschiffen. Leider ist insbesondere das Land-Programm im Vergleich zu früher stark abgespeckt, mit gerade mal drei Dampftraktoren.

      Unfortunately, the Flensburg Steam Fair is nothing compared to what it used to be. The last one in 2019 had about thrice as many Ships, including many from nearby Denmark and some from Sweden and Norway too. The really big Difference is on Land though, there were way more Traction Engines, Steam Rollers and Locomobiles back then, where many came from the Netherlands. Given how long such Events are planned in Advance, the Uncertainty of the German Covid Regulations kept most of the foreign Participants away. The only one would have been a Dansih Ship from nearby Sonderborg, but it had to cancel on short Notice because of a Crew Shortage. Three German Ships that usually participate couldn't come either, as one had a Boiler Problem, one has Stabilty Problems that don't allow it to sail at Sea anymore (it's located in Hamburg so it still can sail on the Elbe Estuary and Kiel Canal), and the third one had some other Technical Problem that I can't remember right now. Before 2013, the Flensburg Steam fair was even greater, as there also were Steam Locomotives right at the Waterfront. That became impossible when the Switch to the Harbour Railway was removed in 2014. We'll have to see what 2024 brings; I told some People I know about the Flensburg Steam Fair and if they want to participate in 2024. Some of them are at the Basel Fire Department Museum in northern Switzerland, where they have an operational Steam Fire Engine from 1905 (believed to be the oldest operational one in the World), and the other one is a Farmer in Southern Bavaria who has a Steam Roller and some Locomobiles plus a Threshing Machine and other Stuff to drive with the Locomobiles. Another Possibilty is the Museum Ship Cap San Diego (Cargo Ship from 1962 and the largest seaworthy Museum Ship in the World), where I occasionally volunteer on. We're considering a Trip to Flensburg since a few Years, and the Flensburg Steam Fair would be a great Opportunity for that IMHO. Even though the Cap San Diego is powered by a Diesel Engine, but many of the Ships that participated until 2019 are too.

      That's Flenbsurg for you. We've got an unusual Amount of Historic Buildings here, because the typical Weather (not as seen in the Video) saved the City from Air Raids thrice.

    Moin moin! Nice to see working steam ships. I hope to take a ride on the Stettin or Wal some day when I return to Flensburg.

      They are usually located in Hamburg (Stettin) and Bremerhaven (Wal). The Flensburg Steam Ship is the Alexandra. I'd recommend the Stettin, as it still has the original 1933 Boilers, while the Boilers on the Wal were replaced by Oil-fired Watertube Boilers in 1964 (as seen in the Video at 02:13).

      That's mostly Ash, as all these Ships burn Silesian Gas Coal, which burns very cleanly with hardly any Smoke, Soot or Ash. Reason is not only less Emissions, but also that it has less Sulfur than "traditional" Welsh or Ruhr Coal, hence it's better for the Boilers. Even when burning said "dirty" Coal, thick black Clouds are Ash, that comes either from Soot blowing the Smoke Tubes, or was drawn into the Funnel.

      Every two Years. The next one should be in 2024 if all goes well. The 2022 Event was tiny compared to 2019, and especially to pre-2013. Except for the three Steam Tractors, there were no foreign Participants at all this Year. Usually, some Scandinavian Steam Ships come too, but their Visit must be planned far in Advance. That Planning couldn't be done reliably due to the constantly changing German Covid Regulations, hence they stayed away. So did all the Steam Rollers and Traction Engines, that usually come mostly from the Netherlands. Privately owned Steam Engines are fairly rare in Germany. Partially because the strict Boiler Safety Regulations make maintaining them very expensive, but mostly because German Farms typically were too small to own expensive Steam Machinery, hence there nver were too many Engines that could even be preserved to begin with. The pre-2013 Steam Fairs were even greater, as there used to be some Steam Locomotives on the Rails right at the Waterfront, but the Switch connecting that Rail Line to the Mainline was removed in 2014, hence Steam Trains are gone forever from Flensburg.
      I know a Farmer from Bavaria who has quite an impressive Collection of Portable Engines (Locomobiles) plus a Steam Roller, and I already pitched the Flensburg Steam Fair to him. Transporting one or two of his Machines the 800 km (500 Miles) to Flensburg would be very expensive though, hence he can't tell yet if he is planning to participate. I already made a Video of one of his Portable Engines (Steam Threshing), and am planning to make another one next Year, probably going to be titled "How to fire up a Steam Roller". Another Connection of mine to whom I'm going to pitch the Flensburg Steam Fair is the Swiss Fire Fighting Museum in Basel. They have self-driving Steam Fire Engine (most of these Machines were Horse drawn), which is believed to be the oldest operational one in the World, built in 1905. I tried to make a Video of it in May, but cocked up badly. The next Chance is in late January. The Third Connection of mine, that my visit the 2024 Flensburg Steam Fair is the Museum Ship Cap San Diego, where I am one of the Volunteers maintaining and sailing it. The Cap San Diego isn't a Steam Ship, but usually, some Motor Vessels participate in the Flensburg Steam Fair. IIRC, the Cap San Diego is the only Museum Ship with an operational large Two Stroke Marine Diesel Engine. It certainly is the largest seaworthy Museum Ship in the World though, but the American Liberty and Victory Ships aren't much smaller. We (as in the Volunteers of the Cap San Diego) actually wanted to visit Flensburg this Year a few Weeks after the Steam Fair, but couldn't bargain a good Deal with the local Tug Boat Operators and hence postponed Flensburg to next Year. I already suggested to postpone it another Year, in order to participate in the Steam Fair.

      Little Addition: If you like Steam Ships, Hamburg probably is the Place to go. Although only one of the Ships here is from Hamburg (Icebreaker Stettin), there are at least five more operational Steam Ships there. Thats an even higher "Density" than Switzerland, and unlike there, the Engine Rooms of the Ships in Hamburg are open to all Passengers, often even at all Times. Reason is, that the Ships in Hamburg are Museums operated by Volunteers, while the Swiss Steam Ships still operate commercially.

      It's actually fairly relaxed most of the Time, as the Engine mostly runs half ahead only
