  • This week we take a ride on the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, inspired by a photo taken of my dad nearly 100 years ago. Then it is on to Acadia National Park to explore and do a lot of video editing.

Oh, my, so appreciate your video today, just gorgeous scenery. But most of all, that you and John have each other to share a common love of travel and beautiful memories. Those are the precious moments in life you will one day keep in your heart. My one day happened a few weeks ago, and tough as it is, I will still travel, will keep moving forward. Looking forward to your next adventure. 🙋🏼‍♀️❤️😎

Love those old then and now photos. Hope you took one of you this trip. Have photo of oldest daughter at 11 mo. in my backpack carrier. We were standing in the doorway of Beaufort Castle, Luxembourg. A second with us in same doorway when the family (now 3 daughters) took a Euro trip and she was a H.S. Senior.

GREAT video. Brought back memories of the Cog RR which I rode in '68 and again in '98. Steam only then, but a little soot is what adds character to the ride.
I get to summit Mt Wash. again later today. I'm following 2 AT thru hikers who hiked up back on 7/22 and are scheduled to post their video later today. Jay Wanders Out is the YT channel name.
BTW - you are correct. The other cog RR in the US is Pikes Peak.

Mt. Washington wasn’t a Harvest Host when I was last there, wish it had been as we spent the day in the parking lot across the road. Glad you got into Arcadia as I was a 23’ truck camper at the time and no go per rangers. They lie about the bridges tho. I parked where those other RVs were. Days gone by and thanks for the memories!

We were in Winter Harbor after we saw you. It is a lovely small town. We tried to take the ferry to Bar Harbor but it was raining too hard. The ferries were cancelled. Years ago we drove up Mount Washington and will never do it again! 80° F at the bottom and 30°F at the top and windy! They warned us to hold on tight to our 3 year old. Love watching these videos.

Here’s the backstory on the ferry. They only have one skipper. So when the weather is bad it is his excuse to take a day off. Otherwise he works 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whew.

Another great video. We skipped New Hampshire on our way up to Canada because the Frank Lloyd Wright house in Manchester didn’t have any tour openings for a couple weeks out. Back in the 70s I hiked to the top of Mt. Washington while the rest of my family drove to the top and I hitched a ride down. Interesting to compare your and our Acadia experiences. We stayed 4 nights in 4 different campgrounds. Two national park (Seawall and Schoodic) and two private (Bass Harbor and Bar Harbor). Our Class C is 25 ft so we could not do the roads so we took the shuttle instead. On our way out we stayed at Sholom Vineyards Harvest Hosts that produces a delicious Mead. See you next week to find out how you entered Canada…

I had the same feeling when I visited Mount Rushmore that you did at the Mt Washington cog railway. My mom and grandmother visited Mount Rushmore in the ‘30s when it was still being constructed. They were on their way back to Pasadena from picking up their new Studebaker in South Bend and took pictures of it with incomplete heads and workers hanging out of eyes and noses. It felt like part of the continuum to get to go back in the ‘70s and see it completed.

Thank you for sharing. I grew up in NH and ME (summers). You visited all of my favorite hangouts. At Mt Washington, anyone who doesn’t want to pay $100 to ride up then the can hike to the top following Tuckerman’s Ravine. A 3.6 mile challenging hike to the top on the south side. The coast line of ME is my favorite. I road my bike on two different occasions to the top of Cadillac Mountain. The ride down hill is so steep and the speed so high I was not able to stop my bike until I reached the bottom. It was an exhilarating experience. Safe travels.

So loved this video! I lived in the White Mountains of New Hampshire for 18 years, so you were in my backyard! One of my friends used to work on the cog railroad, and my daughter was a concierge at Mt. Washington Hotel.
Spent some time camping in Bar Harbor... took a plane ride around the island, also kayaked around Porcupine Islands, which you showed in your video of Bar Harbor, just before you showed the "area for RVs to park...but not much room". They were the three islands in a row which resembled porcupines...Ha!
I have many pleasant memories of my time and adventures all over New Hampshire and Maine!

There are so many insider tips I could have shared. Hopefully you got some fresh lobster from the “lobster pound” in Winter Harbor.
