    We came over in 2015 from the Uk to sail on the American Queen.
    Great trip and loads of pictures of the working tugs and barges, the Mississippi had been a bucket list for years.

      A good cook can make a trip enjoyable, and is a valuable crew-member.

    How many crew do you normally have onboard? I mean, two people could do 12 hour shifts each, but that's seriously demanding.

      8-11 depending on boat

      We work 6 hours on and six off, repeated for the trip. Usually trips are about 30 days.

    From one Capt. Kyle to another, Happy Birthday! How often do you have close calls like that ship turning into you?

    • @marktwained
      @marktwained  8 років тому

      Quite often things get my attention. He was turning on his ranges, he didn't get much closer than a quarter mile. I was just past line he had to run to stay in deeper water of ship channel.

    You do work hard. Knowing how not to get the tow in trouble is not something most people could do for long...

    Hi captain how far north do the big ships go and what prevents them from going farther their length too big for the locks or their draft?

    • @marktwained

      Draft

      From Baton Rouge northbound, channel is only maintained to 12ft minimum. Or maybe even 9 in extreme low water situation.

    From the camera view it looks like you are driving into pitch black.
