  • In todays episode I give my best to answer a question I've been asked quite often: how long does it take to learn a handstand?
    Of course there's not a one-size-fits-all answer to that question, so the best I can do is to manage expectations
    There are many factors that influence how fast you learn a skill. Depending on your former experience with movement, your dedication/consistency, your programing and social influences, it can take from a couple of weeks to a couple of years.
    But the nice thing about figuring out how to balance on your hands is that if you practice consistently you will eventually see progress. And it's kinda like learning how to stand on your feet as a child. So just keep at it and enjoy the journey!
    And if you need more motivation or insights to improve your handstand training, head over to handstanddiary... and subscribe to my newsletter!

    My HS journey originated from 10+ years yoga practice where I could do various headstands, forearm stands, bent-arm balancing poses, pikes, presses and transitions. I could float from standing-full split into balance but only hold off the wall for a few seconds. I learned tuck-ups, straddle and pike press and practiced after class for another hour but for years my progress was incremental and believed relying on the wall would be my fate.
    A new studio manager saw me kicking up against a mirrored wall and barked at me--I was hurt and insulted as a long-time member because I had practiced in that spot for years but it forced me to find a new space and instead of being resentful to accept it as a sign.
    I began to research beyond yoga tutorials into gymnastics, cross-fit, and Acrobat where the instruction was more specific and the training much more rigorous. I began to drill more exclusively 6 days, 2 hrs after 60-75 mins yoga for the past 3.5 months and have made considerable progress. At present, I can balance 6 out of 10 attempts and hold for 10-20 secs in the middle of the floor from various entries. I still find myself in disbelief at times but my hopes for my 60th bday this Fall is that I will have signed and finalized my divorce from my "beloved wall". Many, many thanks for your inspiration and shared obsession!

    For me in my late forties about 2.5 years or longer before starting to catch ok freestanding consistently. Trained regularly most days for 10 or 15 minutes on top of some body weight training. It was most frustrating especially about the 1.5 to 2 year mark when some days I couldn't seem to hold one for even a couple of seconds and I'd think omg I've wasted so much effort here on something that I'm just innately crap at . But as you say realising that it's more about the journey is a biggie. Also what kept me trying was thinking that at least it was a good workout and I feel better having been upside down. Still have my bad days!

      exactly!! first of all thanks for sharing the time you've been taking to learn the skill. I think it's so important for people to read comments like yours, because in most cases it does take years. But in the end, the reason why most people keep going is because it just feels bad if you don't do handstands. I don't know about you, but I kinda need it for my own sanity 😅

      Thank you for your post! I'm a 66 year old woman and have been handstand training for 1.5 years. I can hold for 3 seconds sometimes. I feel close but my right wrist has been playing up. I can't wait until it's easy. It's such fun and feels so good. I found your post very encouraging.

      @@HandstandDiary Thinking about this reminds me of probably the most frustrating part of the journey for me; those days when I first started catching a few 5 or 10 second holds in a session. It was hard not to think then 'finally I've got it!' but almost inevitably those days would be followed by several more hopeless ones, my ego crushed and a realise actually nope, I haven't. So humbling (yet healthy) 🤪

    Personally, it took me 4 months to get a solid handstand, but my consistency was a bit lacking at that time. So if I had been training more often I would have gotten the handstand a month or two earlier for sure.
    I just had a good flexibility to begin with so that wasn’t an issue and my level of fitness wasn’t that bad either.

    • @HandstandDiary
      @HandstandDiary  5 років тому

      That's still very fast! I'm pretty sure most people who are unexperienced in anything gymnastics related take 1-2 years. It took me a lot longer than 3 months too if you're picky about it, cause I started playing with it way earlier. But also very inconsistently on and off..

    I'd recommending getting a HS coach, I spent 13 months following Gymnasticbodies HS course practicing 5-6 days a week and didnt really get anywhere in terms of balance, but did build endurance and open up my shoulders. I learned more in 2 month with a coach than i did in over a year of trying to learn on my own, and can now jump into tuck maybe 8/10 tries.

    have been learning the handstand for about a year now and can hold it for a min or so but not everytime. sometimes ill just kick up and fall not even getting to the balance point. but sometimes again ill hold a solid straight handstand with zero effort. right now my goal is to nail a handstand every time i kick up. god knows how many more years thats gon take but not really planning on giving up

      It sounds like you are at a point where it would be beneficial to progress to doing shapes, transitions and pressing. This will also help to make your handstand more consistent.

    Mobility and range of motion is my greatest weakness. I am working on this everyday and can now do a handstand in two weeks. However, to hand balance I have accepted it will take me many months to increase my range of motion and mobility which is a massive part of the puzzle.

      it depends on what your goal is and where your current level is at. at the begining I couldn't do more than maybe 1 hour, because my wrists would start hurting. but after time and practice now I train up to 3 hours per day

    Do u think I can balance on handstand?? I have a bad history of wrists fracture... the right one has misaligned bones structure also.
    I hv been practicing yoga n beginner level callisthenics for 2-3 years. Though I have gained good amount of strength on my wrists. I can hold handstand on wall support for 1-2 min easily but when it comes to balance the right wrist pains ...feels very discomfort.
    So do u think I can be able to balance on my fractured wrists or have u seen someone doing handstand on such wrists...???
    Ur reply will really help me n give me some hope.
    🙏 From India.

    • @HandstandDiary
      @HandstandDiary  4 роки тому +1

      This is very hard to answer, not being able to do any testing on your wrists. But in any case you can graduate away from the wall slowly by aligning your body and relying more on your hands and less on the wall gradually. In your case I'd recommend working with someone who can have a closer look at it.
