    Hi Stone - theres a few variables to consider namly the absorption of the paper and the quality of the gesso. By and large I use two coats of gesso to seal up the lining paper I get here in the UK. If I use one coat it tends to dry the oils too quickly. And if its a little thin in on spot the paint literally sinks into the paper. So the final answer is two coats a couple of hours apart seans to work well😃😃😎😎 .

      Thanks for the quick reply Paul! That’s what I was thinking by the way it was behaving. Time to break out the gesso!! 😅

    Dollar Tree had these grate small size turn table paint brush holder. I bought one, but when I went back they were all sold out. I use flat board canvas, good coat of flat spray paint sand, give another coat, one last sanding. For my palette I use a plastic low level food tray with a lid. Line with your idea of plastic paper, and a bit of wet to the bottom, and top lid to keep acrylic paint still moist.. If one is handy they can get an old end table, just the right size to put one of your idea inexpensive easel. my end table was free. It was a toss out.

      Brilliant - I love to hear how we artists can use a little ingenuity to reuse and recycle everyday objects. Thrift stores and Facebbok market place are happy hunting ground s for so many items too.
      A stay wet palette for acrylics is a good example of this. We've just rescued a couple of small filing cabinets for our watercolour supplies, papers and materials. I like to fit some casters so we can wheel them around the room. They make great art cadies and best of all they were free! 😃😃😎😎

    Happy New Year! A great video for starting our painting journey of 2024! You’re right they are great materials!! I do have suggestions for beginners that helped me. Paint sets are typically cheaper, and there are many great colors in one collection. I use Winsor Newton water mixables. I also suggest buying a clear plastic tablecloth for your workspace under your tabletop easel. Thank you Paul!! 🎊

      Did a quick landscape today on some liner paper that I picked up yesterday. Very nice. Literally did not feel any different than a canvas. Thinking about how to mount this piece of paper now. Glue spray and a backer board? What’s your preferred method?
      Stole the wife’s freezer paper, it worked equally as well as the pallet pads

      @PaulRansonArt  8 місяців тому

      Now, despite having a ton of my art on paper I haven't got one single painting on display! When I did display them I use a few dots of bluetack onto a backer board. Then I could swop them about. They stayed on display for some time without a problem. One tip is to stick a small square of tape to the paper where the blue tack is going. This stop the paper tearing. Hope this helps@@timbrown2904

    When I decided to get into painting,I built a 5 1/2 foot easel for about $30 , very easy , out of 2 1/2 in and 1 1/2 in. Pre cut 8 ft boards $1.49 each ,it was 6ft but I cut it down 1/2 ft and I’m no carpenter.I can send u pics and how to with a email that was 5 months ago .

      @PaulRansonArt  15 днів тому

      That's so kind of you to think of me. I just watched your short video of the $30 easel which looks great. I have two floor standing easels one similar to yours. But with all the film gear and lighting I don't have room for it in the studio at present. Fingers crossed one day I'll have a bigger room to set up in. BTW did you check out the Lepro LED lights? They are amazing value and would clamp right on to the centre spar of your easel. Perfect for those dull days when the lighting isn't so good. Happy Painting - Paul 😃😎

    Hi Paul!! I just tried the lining paper and am wondering how many layers of gesso or acrylic you paint on to yours? I used just one layer of gesso and it was difficult to paint. It felt as the oil was all being sucked out of the paint and tripled the stiffness. I’m wondering if I need more applications to prime it. Appreciate any thoughts you might have. Thanks!

    Great ideas Paul. I have a separate tool box for every kind of paint. Also, does that light clip on your Stanrite easel, and is it steady? No wobble?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  8 місяців тому

      Ditto Yovette. I have too many tool boxes! I really must get started on using up some supplies. This Lepro light has a proper clamp so won't wobble or losten up. Its perfect for my Stanrite easels because its so light. It has a USB plug so I can reuse an old phone charge plug 🤗 I use a couple of exercise ankle weights to give my easel a bit more stability whilst I'm filming. But a sock filled with clean gravel works just as well.

      @@PaulRansonArt Thank you for that info Paul. I just may have to look into that Lepro. I got a special light made just for the Stanrite, but it wobbles a little.

    I purchased some of the items that you are showing ,but there was one of your videos that you showed how you were attaching it to the back of a canvas and other tips as well which one do I go on ? Also with lining paper you want to get the thickest 1200-2000 ? As Amazon will not ship to my address !

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  12 днів тому

      Hi - pleased your getting into your paiting and hopefully saving a happy $$ too. The video I think you need to see is this one ua-cam.com/video/Wbb9p3gdCHY/v-deo.html all about canvases. Its part of my 'What should I buy...' playlist. I use either 1600 or 2000 grade lining paper (UK labeling). 1200 is a little thin. Cut and tape to the old canvas as in the how to video and then a couple of coats of acrylic. I do them in batches of 6 or more. Its quicker and easier once you have the materials out. - Paul 😃

    This paper is very cheap my canvas cost 5 euro a small.thank you.i have a simple paper if i would put linseed oil sir?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, you can as long as you make sure its not going to absorbe the oil. So you see I give the paper two coats of acrylic paint and let it dry between coats. I do 6 or seven paper canvases at a time with a small roller like in my video here - ua-cam.com/video/Wbb9p3gdCHY/v-deo.html watch this and then you'll know how I make my canvases for very little money - best wishes Maria - Paul 😃

    Is the lining paper self adhesive and does it stick well?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  8 місяців тому +1

      Hi Brad - the lining paper is dry and is simply taped to a canvas. It needs to be sealed with a couple of coats of either gesso or acrylic. Then left to dry completely. After that you can paint in oils and the surface wont absorb the oil paint. Once the painting is dry you can remover it by snipping the tape and starting with a fresh piece of lining paper. I made a video about this and here's the link ua-cam.com/video/Wbb9p3gdCHY/v-deo.html - happy painting

    Why the American spelling?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  4 місяці тому

      Hi Michael - its all to do with keywords. We handed the internet to the machines to run and they decide the what and the where of it all. Occasionally I use the American spelling so that the machines know both spellings of common words like colour and color. It might make no difference at all but I use them all the same - Paul 😃😃😎😎😍😍
