Early TL;DR for this reply - Civil Engineer is great, Secret Service is best, don't discount Heavy Metal for a beginner build if you aren't using energy weapons or have Class Freak. Personally, I'd say Civil Engineer is best-in-slot for auto melee builds because having your weapons break slower is great quality of life, and it gets over your 300/300 threshold anyways for both resistances. It also has access to everyone's favorite mod, the jetpack, so you don't miss out on that, either. It's also really easy to get the full set, and arguably easier to get all the upgrades you'll need for it as well, since iirc there's no actual limit on how many stamps you can get in a day, and expedition runs can be fairly quick with the right builds. That said, I *do* agree that Secret Service armor is the best set in general due to having the best mixed resistances and still having access to a lot of good mods to make it even better. It can just take a bit to get everything you need due to the daily bullion limit. Brotherhood Recon, on the other hand, has a bit more ballistic resistance, but its energy resistance is lacking and IMO puts it beneath the Civil Engineer armor, and is also much harder to get. I will also add, if we take mutations into account and the common damage types, this is more personal theory than anything that's actually been put into practice, but I feel that heavy metal armor with the Grounded mutation could actually serve beginners better than heavy leather since it patches up its lower energy resistance, and with the Scaly Skin mutation, leads to a solid amount of mixed resistances. I will acknowledge though that it can be detrimental if you're trying to use an energy weapon without Class Freak.

Shadowed Botsmith is actually great for stealth builds, Second only to Covert Scout in stealth bonuses while having much better DR and RR, so if you do get caught (or stealth isn't an option) you actually have some survivability.
I still run basic scout armor for stealth builds the light weight armor kinda sells it for me, my whole idea is why do you need good armor If you don't plan on getting hit

I recently picked up a full set of solar armor on my charisma/support build and it's definitely interesting. I think people often underestimate the set bonuses in favor of dr. But if you're skilled at avoiding damage, you don't need to be as tanky and set bonuses become more valuable. 4hp/s doesn't sound like much, but it's constantly active even in combat and stacks with itself...so multiple teammates can run it for even more healing. Even solo, you still get the healing, and with a quick firing vampire weapon and rolling for overeater's you rapidly become a beast of a health regen tank. Just something to consider.
I NEEDED this video. I was just saying recently that I needed to learn more. I've been using Chinese Stealth Armor for years... Was wondering if there was something better that I could wear apparel with. Thank you so much! I have to say, I LOVE the Chinese Stealth armor .. especially for my love of playing in stealth mode.
I've only just upgraded to Heavy Combat Armour with Shadowed and Deep Pockets. A very aggressive sniper build gameplay style. Toon is level 74. I seldom "need" armour because everything is dead before they know that I am there, but sometimes things do go pear shaped. Bit of mitigation helps kite in those scenarios.
I like the BOS recon because it took me soooooo long to grind all the pieces. To top it off I have the OTHER bos recon helmet so I get a flashlight, any armor with a light and jet pack mod is a win for me.
Leather Armor is really great in the beginning as you can quickly unlock all mods that can be learned by crafting and scrapping level 1 light leather arms. You get most of the materials back by scrapping them and I think the Armorer perk rank 2 can even fully prevent ressource loss. After that instead of using your caps to buy the plans for heavy armor, I would just travel to player camps and buy legendary armors. Longterm Secret Service Armor is still the best as it has the best stats, it has a jetpack and you can craft them easily with just one legendary module per craft. The Brotherhood recon armor has slightly more DR but overall the Secret Service armor has better stats. The new civil engineer armor can be nice as you can trade it with a jetpack und the slower weapon break helps, but as it has no good stats you want to switch it out later on.
Got a full set of brotherhood recon with overeaters and I love it, perfect for my junkies tank build, damn near impossible to kill. Reckon it looks better than secret service too.
I am jelly cuz I want to get unyielding brotherhood the only reason he said secret service is better is because is easier to get but fallout 76 is all about that grind
personally i really like the marine and arctic marine armors. they definitely arent the best in the game, but with the alaskan winter camo they look absolutely amazing, especially with that enclave backpack.
Forgot to mention underarmors. They are important part of your set. Shielded Secret Service offers +4STR +4END +2PER its probably the best But for EXP grinders Sheilded Casual for +3 INT would be better, tho its way too rare Link your video on them in the pinned comments or description
just to let people know even though other players can craft the SS under armor they cannot trade it to you so don't bother asking lol. I didn't know that and wasted materials for a friend other day.
I liked a lot that solar armor or how it is (one with healing set bonus), I actually would use it over secret service one, if it had jetpack and if it could be rerolled as for some reason it cant (or at least when I had it couldnt be rerolled), since I go with full health, it was quite fine thing for me, now I may try to switch to engineer armor, I am lazy to craft it, so I wait for last piece I am missing to drop from something, then I will see if it is worth of rerolling stars on it or if I return to secret service, because slower weapon breaking sounds just so great on its own
It depends on your build, some work perfect with certain builds like melee or stealth, but the Secret Service Armor is the most balanced armor (non PA) in the game.
SS armor been around since wastelanders, they need to come out with newer and better armors. Was hoping for new top teir armor with the atlantic city patch.
Great video...I was just helping a guy last night in this subject. Only point I'd add is tradeability vs craft only. If you don't have access yet to SS, Recon or resources to craft, then a trade or vendor find for a good Heavy Combat or Recon is the way to go. I think this is why these slightly lower armors are still very popular because of the trade value to get the exact rolls you want. Lastly, having a mismatched set is OK as the 2/3d effects are normally more important than matching, like WWR or AP, a slight reduction in a stat to have a needed effect is worth it IMO. I've been sending noobs your way to learn the ropes! Thanks for what you do.
Secret service takes a couple weeks if you hit the trade cap daily just to unlock the pieces. Civil Engineer takes a just a questline to get the full set.
MY SET - BOS armor, UNY on alll pieces that also have 3 wwr and 2 reduced fall damage (no fall damage). Harder to get and harder to roll for legendary mods but youll stand out and look baddass. i use alaskan paint, no apparel on top. Gotta show it off!
Ss is the best overall but like u said it depends what build u r running cos say I’m doin a melee build I’ll use the thorn scout armour for extra bleed damage but that’s only after the grind it took to get it lol
Great comment! That's the only thing is it is quite the grind to get, and I think it was nerfed a few months ago. I should test it further to be honest. Thanks for the comment :)
@@MrWestTek for the things that are a grind to get I don’t understand why they get nerfed like isn’t the whole point of endgame grind that the rewards are still worth it
Secret service doesn't use ballistic fibre. But instead it uses asbestos. Asbestos is less rare, not super common but common enough that it makes me smile I made that upgrade yesterday
Camp McClintock has four ammo pouches which scrap for ballistic fiber. One on the counter in the main room, on in a locker on the opposite side, one in the APC near the barracks, and one in the barracks itself.
Even with the railway it's boring. I added unarmed perks to it and added explosive damage increase. Still kinda boring. I wish they gave damage perks to full health builds. Tired of bloody.
The clone army build that 90% of people use lol. I like shotguns, completely crippling a boss and watching it just lay on the floor helplessly as everyone unloads on it I just too funny to me
Love these videos, especially for a returning player :) Question: If I put a legendary mod onto my Secret Service Chest piece its 5 modules for 1 star.. was this changed?
I'm not a beginner, but I still generally prefer the Civil Engineer armour. The lower defenses aren't really that big in most cases(especially if you have a Vampire weapon and with how many Stimpaks Daily Ops throws at you), and the slower weapon breaking is pretty big, especially for a more casual player.
Would it be possible for you to make a video ranking the various armours by how stealthy they are? I'm a big fan of the look of a mix of light/sturdy combat armour and hope to keep using it for the endgame. It's protection definitely is outmoded by other options, so I'm hoping it's stealth at least somewhat redeems it 😅.
For the casual player….totally undervalued Chinese stealth armor with a good commando build….. Unless you’re into power armor, or other builds….you’re just kind of wasting bullion and caps. Free, and the stealth is amazing in almost all circumstances. And as in this video, the radiation protection is incredible. Ballistic and melee protection is fine. You may have to stim yourself a bit more…..but this suit combined with an excavator power armor. It’s just an incredibly cheap endgame combination.. No need for bloodied or a bunch of wild crazy combinations that can only be achieved after incredible grinding. And this is not a knock on the people who do that. Hats off to them, but I love the game yet have an outside life that prevents long hours of play. What I am recommending this for is a cheap solid endgame set for the “casual” guy. I recommend wearing a marine tactical helmet instead of Chinese helmet. It has better protection and frankly just looks better than that red pink monstrosity. You still get the bonus for a full set as the helmet doesn’t count. A cheap atom buy of V63 armor paint makes the excavator armor look first class. I can accomplish anything in the game. Not as quickly and I definitely burn a hell of a lot more ammo. But I’m not spending 10 hours grindingsomething either..
Not sure if it's still the case but you could also use the SS chest with covert scout limbs and mask and benefit from the stealth bonus but also have access to the jetpack.
I run full health, have a SS set with 4 Chameleon pieces and a Fixer, I can stand in front of a level 100 Super Mutant and mutant hounds and be invisible to the point that they bump into me and still dont know where i am
I have a full set of Unyielding Civil armour and in my 300 hours so far I’ve found it to be the best I’ve used. Not saying it’s the best in the game I’m not sure yet but in my experience it’s certainly done a better job then anything else I’ve used and it was very easy to obtain I bought most of the set from trading, I have got 399 damage resistance on it and the other stats are also very good. I also get 525 carry weight overall with the high capacity back pack as well as the carry weight from armour which is what was most appealing to me. I would recommend anyone to go for it if you have not done.
Stealth commando with Chinese Stealth is ridiculously OP. Literally every shot is a sneak attack 100% of the time unless you are in a situation where the enemy has infinite perception like the uplink daily op.

You can get BoS heavy armor for free without having to buy plans by farming the 2 guards up the road from wayward. Rinse and repeat. Most the time its sturdy but they drop a ton of the BoS style to
Dear Mr. WestTek I have a question on Unyielding SS armor: Do all the pieces stack Special stats? as in if you have a full set of unyielding, you would add +15 to all special stats? You should do a whole video explaining what buffs stack with what and what buffs don't. This is an aspect of the game I'm really puzzled about.

Im just stumbling around out there in my stolen BoS bits and pieces, and now i have to get some of these things.
Awesome video 👏👏👏
@ lvl. 350, wearing SS armour and had NO idea about the 'modules'/stars
Thank you 👍🍻🙏🙌
Thanks for sharing this info.
My pleasure
Something worth mentioning is that Civil Engineering, BoS Recon and Secret Service are the only non-power armours which can get the Jetpack mod.
Btw for anyone wondering you get the heavy combat armor plans from the free states vendor
When it comes to stealth, the Chinese Stealth is my favorite as well.
This is gonna save me sooooo many modules on that SS armor, thank you for rolling the dice on the 3 star RNG luck to confirm this!
Of course! Some people think I'm out here lying lol. You will only get the truth with me and can count on it 💯
@@MrWestTek very much appreciated! Was only a 2 star but with just about 20 modules have already rolled one SS UNY +1INT leg 😎
This will help me alot thanks. Could you do a vid on how to make a Jetpack and the process on gathering the items required. Thx again
I have been really enjoying the civil engineer armor
A metal chest, 1 metal limb, and 3 leather limbs will put you over 260 resistance for both physical and energy dmg
I ran with botsmith the most in my early days and bos heavy combat armor
Brotherhood Recon looks the best imo
I am jelly cuz I want to get unyielding brotherhood the only reason he said secret service is better is because is easier to get but fallout 76 is all about that grind
2.8K Likes , deserves a million.
Thanks for the info. Have fun
personally i really like the marine and arctic marine armors. they definitely arent the best in the game, but with the alaskan winter camo they look absolutely amazing, especially with that enclave backpack.
3k+ views and only 300 likes? Come on peeps, let's show Mr WestTek more love and smash that like button! 😊 He provides us all with great content! ❤
LOL I feel blessed as it is, don't encourage them 🤣
A set of overeater's solar armor isn't to bad you just don't anything for radiation unless you use a legendary perk card.
Forgot to mention underarmors. They are important part of your set.
Shielded Secret Service offers +4STR +4END +2PER its probably the best
But for EXP grinders Sheilded Casual for +3 INT would be better, tho its way too rare
Link your video on them in the pinned comments or description
just to let people know even though other players can craft the SS under armor they cannot trade it to you so don't bother asking lol.
I usually run Secret Service, but lately I've been running my old Solar Armor again so I can help all the new players doing public events. :)
SS armor been around since wastelanders, they need to come out with newer and better armors. Was hoping for new top teir armor with the atlantic city patch.
Just rebalance BOS Recon Armor to up it's base DT maybe give it a set bonus against abominations (mutants, ghouls, scorched and cryptids)
Jet packs are only available on the secret service, brotherhood recon and civil engineer armors.
Covert scout armor still gets the stealth bonus if you’re wearing the mask and a jet pack torso from another armor type.
Civil Engineer armor is probably the armor set you should get first because its free, after that, either the Brotherhood Recon or the Secret Service.
After playing with all the different armour types, i prefer the over eaters solar armour. It's just so easy to play with it.
@@MrWestTek for the things that are a grind to get I don’t understand why they get nerfed like isn’t the whole point of endgame grind that the rewards are still worth it
great video - exactly what I am looking for - thank you
I need an armor that do not need Ballistic Fiber to be repair lol
Fr the most boring part of the game, making runs for the rarest crafting material just to repair 5 pieces of armor
@@alphaspartanlol
Secret service doesn't use ballistic fibre. But instead it uses asbestos. Asbestos is less rare, not super common but common enough that it makes me smile I made that upgrade yesterday
@@mpb6491 generally you can buy bulk materials like those at Whitesprings Mall
Camp McClintock has four ammo pouches which scrap for ballistic fiber. One on the counter in the main room, on in a locker on the opposite side, one in the APC near the barracks, and one in the barracks itself.
Absolutely love your videos. They have helped me so much. Thank yoy 😊
Unyeilding SS commando bloody build, u are the destroyer.
100%
But can be a little bit of a boring build. Until u bust out that QE25 Railway.
Even with the railway it's boring. I added unarmed perks to it and added explosive damage increase. Still kinda boring. I wish they gave damage perks to full health builds. Tired of bloody.
@@Hyst44 yeah I carry a no star auto pipe gun and no star bow w/ explosive arrows for the normal enemy encounters. There fun.
Botsmith is the best armour and easy to farm whenever test your metal event is happening, just a takes time to get but worth it
Would it be possible for you to make a video ranking the various armours by how stealthy they are? I'm a big fan of the look of a mix of light/sturdy combat armour and hope to keep using it for the endgame.
It's protection definitely is outmoded by other options, so I'm hoping it's stealth at least somewhat redeems it 😅.
Chinese Stealth armour is pretty good and you can go invisible at the touch of a button
Tysm wes keep it up❤🎉
I will 😁
Not sure if it's still the case but you could also use the SS chest with covert scout limbs and mask and benefit from the stealth bonus but also have access to the jetpack.
I run full health, have a SS set with 4 Chameleon pieces and a Fixer, I can stand in front of a level 100 Super Mutant and mutant hounds and be invisible to the point that they bump into me and still dont know where i am
I like CSA for its asthetics, but hate thats its daily ops only or wait for minerva
BoS Recon grind is even worse
@@crayonchomper1180 arent they both just rare rewards from ops? Does minerva not sell the plans?
Watched you yesterday very helpfull peace out
I have a full set of Unyielding Civil armour and in my 300 hours so far I’ve found it to be the best I’ve used.
For those that are pure melee builds, Thorn armor is goated for its set bonuses
I’ve been rocking the marine armour set it’s not bad so far definitely getting the secrets service one though 😂
Little known fact about Botsmith is that it is the cheapest to maintain because it does not require ballistic fiber to repair.
Stealth commando with Chinese Stealth is ridiculously OP. Literally every shot is a sneak attack 100% of the time unless you are in a situation where the enemy has infinite perception like the uplink daily op.
level 100+ and never had a secret service armor(Im using engineering) yet because I never finished main quest xD Instead I'm doing a lot of side quest because it was interesting. Can't wait to get the stealth armor ;>
At tthey moment I'm loving October ends ' new song, you should definitely react to it!
You can get BoS heavy armor for free without having to buy plans by farming the 2 guards up the road from wayward. Rinse and repeat. Most the time its sturdy but they drop a ton of the BoS style to
I just mass-craft Secret Service pieces in the basement of The Rusty Pick and dump the bad rolls in the legendary machine as I go.
You can get BOS armor by farming the initiates by the wayward
