Dont let the sub 200HP fool anyone. The SVO is quick and it is a pretty light car. I own 2 of them, an 85.5 and an 86 (my 86 for 31 years). My Dad was a diehard chevy guy and a motor head... One of his cars was a 65 Corvette and he had a 350 LT1 (370hp) and a Super T-10 4spd with 3.55ish gears. He wanted to race bc he knew the SVO was quick. On a very early Sunday morning we went on the parkway and came to a stop. We hit it and my SVO stayed with him thru 1st, thru 2nd, and all the way up till tailend 3rd gear when he "slowly BUT surely) pulled away. His HP advantage was the difference BUT he could not stop talking about how "that little sh!t box 4 cylinder could hold its own against a high perf LT1..." He respected that car forever after that and when life got in the way of me having a family and working 2 jobs for years and years he would NEVER allow me to sell it...still have it to this day. Dad is gone 11 years now but this memory will always be with me of that Sunday morning...

When my parents had that car (new from the dealer). My dad and grandpa worked at Garrett Air Research. While one day at lunch, my dad and some guys at Garrett put one of the Garrett turbos on it. OMG, what a monster they made. They had that car for quite a few years. When I turned 16 I got to drive it. I didn't know anything about the turbo mod.
I couldn't tell, the car drove nice and mellow. One day some guy at a light with a loping, open headers obnoxious motor was egging me on to race. At that point I had never got in a race, only been driving legally for about 8months. OMG, did I learn what turbo lag was that day and gaped the shit out of that guy. I've been a car guy for life.

that's the irony--folks would defend their purchase of a GM F body as, "yes, the Fox is faster but my car corners and stops". The SVO was using Lincoln rear brakes, so it wasn't like it would have cost a ton to get a better V8 Mustang, even in SSP (for the police department) tune.

I know what you are saying about the interest in the car. Many people did not recognize the SVO as a Mustang. Most people would not know how to drive the car. RPM was the answer, just keep it singing. As I recall a 5.0 ltr. Stang would get me for the first 50 feet, after that it was all over. With the Gatorback tires, any amount of snow would require parking the car. I have plenty of 100+ mph stories with my SVO.

SVO had MANY performance upgrades over most other cars of the 80s. The earlier turbo mustangs were shit in comparison so i guess that added to the lackluster sales BUT if you did homework on the SVO would couldnt help but be impressed. SVO was designed to compete with 3 series BMW not the mustang GT even tho it was head & shoulder above them on all fronts except for HP... Ford purposely lied about the SVO HP as to not upstage the GT, they both have the same 210 HP

im 51 years old, these foxbodys were a intimidating vehicle , also keep in mind these cars were equipped with many features not found on mainstream production cars at the time. SVO mustangs were priced a few thousand more than the competition . The vehicle was well worth its retail price but, Interests rate were 10 plus percent. Looking back now from my memories the buyer was committing his or herself to a serious financial endeavor. The vehicle and price commanded respect.

Don't forget to factor in you had zero air blowing through that intercooler. I had an 86 and swapped a larger T-Bird intercooler in there and strapped an 800 CFM fan to the intercooler blowing through it at all times. With the hood closed it would vacuum cigarette smoke into it from several inches in front for the scoop.

In 1979, a professional drag racer took advantage of a weight/displacement rule and entered an often overlooked drag-racing class with a Pinto Hatchback, powered by a Ford 2.0L OHC I-4 w/draw-thru carbureted-turbo setup making 306hp. The car took the class for the season's championship, and probably could've been duplicated for the street... if the camshaft chosen wasn't so "wild" and it incorporated multi-point EFI, like the SVO.
BTW: I have seen street-able SVO Mustangs modded to push 300+HP... but they typically incorporated an intercooler considerably different than the one found on the factory engine, respectively.

When these were new (83-86, the original L69 Camaro's, The Holley carb'd Mustangs, Shelby Chargers) I used to play "prospective new car buyer". The poor guy at Sunnyvale FLM - he insisted I needed to try the regular turbo Mustang first, and what a turd that thing was. The SVO on the other hand - he was hanging on for dear life. That's one of the few cars that I've always wanted but never bought.
