  • Are The People of Argentina Racist?
That was the question I was constantly asked ON ALL PLATFORMS. I was warned in Mexico,Peru and Colombia that because of the color of my skin there would be a high chance I would face discrimination. I wanted to dive deeper and understand as to why this would happen to me in the farthest part of South America. This is my video response to me feeling racism in Argentina.

I think you are lucky you didn’t face any racism. As an argentinian myself it’s true peopke are so racist they dont even realize it. Like I woukd never but many peopke say Negro de mierda as an insult that literally translates to as f***ing black or smt like that. Or peruano as someone from peru is sometimes used to say smt is not so good or the bad version, like esta bicicleta es peruana. But not everyone is that way, most of us dont do so. And we are used to sharif different cultures so yeah. It’s a beautiful country here very great for vacations

Excelent. But i should do a clarification regarding what your friend said. She lies. There is no discrimination in terms of races but to certain actions that certain groups carry out.and that are seen by the native population as inadequate. For example, the alleged natives who act violently burning houses, threatening the population with the only justification of being the primitive owners of those lands. Also, some minorities that do not abide by the laws of the country or do not fit your culture and wants to impose its own. No one is persecuted for being of a certain race but there is a negative generalization regarding those.

Wrong, Peruvians love Argentinians because they are really good in different cultural aspects. Also is true that we know that they have these feeling of “superiority”, but we take that like a picturesque characteristic rather than make us feel less than them. Peruvians love, Argentinians, and Argentinians considered Peruvians good friends because we helped them a lot during their war against England.

Argentine and historian here. I am so pissed about this topic, specially, because the people who point us as racist are the trully racist society: the US (who are one of the few trully racist society) and the europeans (specially, the French and the Englishmen) . First of all, we need to clear out concepts: Racism is a SYSTEM of exclusion, by colour of the skin, inside the society. This is the US, a country who, literally, has few years of derogation of the segregacionist laws and very well known about in the world for their racist crimes. The RACISM is a system, a political machine who separates the people for their colour of the skin, arguing the superiority of "whites". So, talk about racism in Argentina has no sense, because we haven't a systematic racial state politics. But, more correct is talk about xenophobia, because, the state has no intention of discriminate, are the individuals who discriminate, and here is where the problem lies. The roots of this is easly traceable in the decade of 1850, where the supreme governor, Juan Manuel de Rosas was defeated by an aliance between their enemies, Brazil, Uruguay, the UK, and the local aristocrats. One of the sectors who support Rosas till the end was the Black argentines, who get huge roles during the Rosas dictatorships. The winners of the civil war watch all the Rosas supporters as inferiors: the mixed up natives, the black argentines, the gauchos, the poors etc. Was the argentinian elite during the 1880 who impulse the mass inmigration, but the inmigration wasnt only europeans: turks, jews, lebanese, armenian and even africans from Cabo verde and Senegal coming to Argentina in this period. One of the first Copa America winners was a black argentinian, Manuel Dos Santos, his mother was caboverdian and his father, a black brazilian. So ¿What happened with the Afro Argentinians? Well, they mixed up. there is a lot of miths about the dissappearence of blacks in my country: the war of independence, the civil wars, the 1872 plague of yellow fever... are just miths. Far for the impossed discourse about the "argentinian racism" the blacks was so well integrated in the society that they just mixed up with the rest of the people. Even our Tango was a black invention, and WE KNOW THIS, one of the most consumed and traditional foods in argentina, the Locro, was a black invention, the mondongo, another traditional food has black culture traces mixed up with the spanish cuisine. But, the xenophobia still impregnated in our country, but, this aren´t a trully racism, in fact, is classism: the Elites view about the blacks and natives are the common views of the high society IN EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. The elites always think that they are superior, and this is not an argentinian thing, is a common thing, in every capitalist country. so, talk about the racistm in argentina, when you are an european or from the US, specially, is you are white or not black are TOO HYPOCRITE

There are different forms of racism. You should read Chinua Achebe's essay on Joseph Conrad. Sometimes racism isn't always based in systems of exclusion. Of course, systemic racism is the most dangerous type.

@@markrush2319 I will try to explain what they mean. Not gonna support the almost rude comment, though. But that my be the language barrier.
Argentina is racist, like any other place in the world, though very diferent from the US racism. But Arg is primarily, classist. So if you are a black from Haiti or an african country, you are assumed poor and do not even speak spanish. So they get ostrized. other black caribeans may have diferent experiences about racism, but since colombians, dominicans, etc, speak spanish, and are legal and have fair jobs, I think they do not suffer that much, at least from what I have heard. If you came from the US, black or white is the same for argentinians (thats where the second strongest discrimination comes in, xenophbia) they may treat you good or bad depending on how the feel about the US, but rarely it will be because of your race.
So, in conclusion, first comes classism, second comes xenophobia and third comes racism.
Hope this help you undestand a little more. And enjoy Mar del Plata!

Being born in Argentina, but having been able to see it from the outside, I can honestly say that the racial issue in Argentina is not really that much about race, but about the main cleavages that divide Argentine society: economic, social, and political. The thing is, as I will explain, these cleavages are draped in a racist language.
To understand the origin of these cleavages, one has to go back to the two myths surrounding the formation of the Argentine Republic and its identity: the myth of the gaucho (rural cowboy, a "mestizo" of Spanish, African and Amerindian blood), and the myth of the white European immigrant that arrived to help form Argentina into an early 20th century economic power. Both myths are true to a certain extent, but they are not true for everyone, as these myths will find a home in different sides of the Argentine landscape.
The economic and social cleavage fall into the rich-poor and urban-rural dynamics. Urban centers are more effective for resource allocation and generating wealth, so it's where naturally immigration tends to focus. This is true whether for European or South American immigrants. The myth of the European, urban and wealthy gentry embeded itself into the Argentine conscience at times of great social tension even when Europeans fell under the poverty line or others surged above it. "Whiteness" was associated to wealth even though lines between white and non-white people are usually dubious. The obvious exception to this rule are Amerindians, who often get the short end of the stick due to lack of public policy and recognition, and general neglect.
The last cleavage, the political one, began to form in the early 20th century and cemented itself within the political aura of peronism. Peronism is a mixed bag from a demographic point of view, but it relies in the belief that it stands for the downtrodden, often non-white working class family: as Lt. Gral. Perón himself referred to them, his "cabecitas negras" (little black heads), due to their dark hair. This perception stands in both sides of the cleavage, as Argentines will generally use the term "negro cabeza" (black head) spawned from Peron's (a general with sympathies for the Axis powers during WW2) dubiously affective term to refer to someone seen as uneducated and barbaric, generally of a darker tone of skin.
In sum, economic-social-political divide, in which ethnic faultlines don't always align themselves, has, for historical reasons and lack of a dedicated form of expression, adopted a racially charged tone. Most Argentines will not see an Afro-Argentine (0,025% of the population), African-American or Black African man in their lives (even though many of us have black blood in our veins), but will nevertheless call someone perceived as socially inferior, backwards or dangerous "black" (next to some other pejorative connotations), especially towards people of neighbouring countries (i.e. Bolivia, as your friend said).
Paradoxically, the word "negro" or "negrito" can and is often used as a term of affection, without the intent to denote or demean someone's ethnicity, and is often used regardless of any racial connotation at all. I mention this to explain that more often than not, this language is used equivocally, in the sense that its purpose has nothing to do with the literal meaning of the word.
With that being said, many Argentines are more and more aware of this and work to change it. I really hope you had a good time in our beautiful country.
    Cheers! And Happy 2023!

Me sentí discriminada.

The only negative experiences I had with Argentines were in Punta Del Este, the playground of the rich Argentines in Uruguay. When I was checking into my 5 star hotel, an Argentine man arrogantly walked past me who was waiting in line to be check in. The clerk actually checked him in first, then apologized to me with the quip, "I am sorry about that, but some of these Argentines...." The other thing was a young, Argentine woman who was staring at me disapprovingly on the airport train as if I did not belong there with all those rich, white, elite Argentines. It did not really bother me at all, but it just showed that there is a problem of elitism among the upper crust of Argentines who look down on everyone who is different than they.

If you come to Argentina with the american perspective of racism then yes, this may be a racist country by those standards. But with all due respect, the world doesn't revolve around the black community. There is an extremely small Afro-Argentine community, close to marginal in terms of population ratio. So we don't have that kind of social and cultural tension, and thus slangs like "negro" are not inherently an insult. Many popular figures here have Negro or Negra as bynames. Hell, I think I can firmly attest that every Argentine has a relative or well-known nicknamed Negro or Negra.
We're a poor country, and so we do struggle with classism. Rich against the poor and all that shit. But make no mistake, we don't have a widespread racial abuse issue, much more less racial conflicts nor segregation over here. If you're looking for that you may go back and have a better look on those latinamerican countries that usually point at us and the way they treat their native, ethnical groups.

    Argentinian here! 🙋‍♂
Our racism is different from other countrys like US, we are primarily classism (discrimination towards the poor). We are a 3th world country, so you can imagine that we have a lot of social tension between rich and poor and we live close together (you can check "villas miseria" spread in the capital and Buenos Aires).
With black people we dont discriminate the same way as the US do, we may call you "negro" or "negrito" in an affectionate way (i have a really nice friend that tells all the people he loves "negrito" no matter your skin). We make a lot of jokes about your skin, but is not personal, is a way to connect with you, we make jokes with asian people, if you are fat or if you have a big nose, even if you are super white. We dont do this to be mean, just to play with you, if you get mad we will not joke again. Obviusly, we dont do this always and with everyone, im just showing you some ways we interact with each other, this is only the tip of an iceberg in our culture.
The only insult we use that is really strong is "negros de mierda". I know, is pretty agressive for other countrys, we use it to insult thiefs and criminals that are poor and they dont need to be black (here you can see the classism). Other than that, the word "negro" is not used to insult, im aware that in the US that word is seen as an insult, here is a color and nothing more.
Here we have supermarkets that chinese people run and we call them "chinos" and is not racist at all, because this places ARE chinese supermkartes, so we describe them like "voy a comprar comida del chino" (translate to: im going to buy groceries from the chinese"). We do this all the time, thats why your friend tells you that we are so racist that we dont even notice it. Is not like that, is because we discriminate in a neutral way, like when you describe someone, we dont insult you calling you negro, the same way we dont insult someone that is bald, we just call them "pelado". The difference can be an insult if we use a tone of voice that is agressive, but we often add other words to appear that we are insulting (like "pelado de mierda", yeah we use the word "shit" very often 😂)
There is a beautiful commercial about this: ua-cam.com/video/YVTGZt5N02U/v-deo.html&ab_channel=PublicidadArgentina
If you understand some spanish, you can hear that a group of guys are reuniting after a long time and, when they meet, the tall guy is called "enano" (dwarf) because he WAS short and now he grew up, but they still call them "enano" in an affecionate way because they know him since he was a short guy. The same with the other guys: "rulo" = curly hair, and then he shaved his head, they still call him "rulo". Then there is a "gordo peralta" = fat (peralta is his lastname), that is skinny and so on. If you get my point, you can start to realice how our culture works, so different for other countrys.
So if you were my friend i might call you "mi negrito" (my little black guy) in an affecionate way.
I hope you understand my point, if you wanna talk or do some other video about us, i will be glad to help you! I love when people of other countrys wanna know about our rare culture 😊

It is that they have this superiority complex, but to clarify it is not that Argentinians think they are better than others because of being whiter, or even because of being argentinian. The fame Argentinians have is that they have a huge ego, they think they are great individualy, compared to anyone else argentinian or not. They are known for speaking of any subject as if they were experts even if it is the first time they talk about it (in argentina they call this type of person a "chanta") . And infact this huge ego of Argentinians that is felt in latin america, is also felt by people of the interior or Argentina in regards to porteños, as people in the interior are much more humble. In fact in latin america some interior people are told they dont seem argentinian.

As an Uruguayan, i can tell u we share a very similar culture with Argentineans. The difference is that proportionally we are only 3.5 millions and we have more black people than them, around 6%, and believe me, we are also considered racist by some Latin American people. I was told several times things like: you people pretend to be European you copy their culture…I guess some people can not understand that we just do what we inherited from our ancestors. Furthermore, most of us, have never visited Europe. One more thing we use the word “negro/a, negrito/a” most of the time as a loving word. I am white, my sister called me all her life, negrita. Because of the use of that word, some people calls us racists but unless the sentence where it is used contains insults, it is not racism. To give u an idea, for us is common to say, “che negro come here, i have to talk to u.” But if the person is red hair, we will say “bo ‘colorado’ come here” if it is Russian, “ruso”… “gordo,” “flaco,”…. see the drill? And no one who belongs to the culture feels offended, because many people get that type of nicknames. Using something that distinguishes them from the rest.
Now, people from Bs As are called as u said porteños, and the have the fame of feeling kind of superior, and their strong Italian accent while speaking Spanish make them sound worse than what they really are. They talk in a way that even other white Argentinean call them “babosos”, we do to. But I don’t want to generalize, as in any country there are all kind of people, including racists. I once went to Mexico and I felt mistreated by most Mexicans i cross path with. That doesn’t mean Mexico is a racist country. But it does have racist people, like un every part of the world.

But something paradoxical about Argentina is that some words can be as offensive as truly affectionate. Words like "negro/a" "negrito/a" and "negri" are used as nicknames, my mom always called their friends like "negri", and a lot of famous people in Argentina are known with alias related to the word black. Argentine here, this will be a very long comment.
Of course that r4c1sm exists in Argentina, and usually is underestimated by most locals but also is exaggerated by many foreigners (and also by most progressive locals). And is more directed against amerindians than against blacks. This is added to xen0ph0b14, that I think that it's stronger than r4c1sm and it's directed especially against people from Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay, countries from which Argentina received a lot of immigrants (many of which were poor and many times also illegal) since a lot of decades and, in the case of the first two, have a majority of amerindians (while Paraguay also have many, although are minority). I will not say that immigrants from predominantly black countries (like Haiti, Dominican Republic or Senegal) are received with red carpet, but definitively they don't have the bad image that have Bolivians, Paraguayans or Peruvians (and today maybe also Colombians and Venezuelans, that immigrated a lot in the last 20 years). That's because they are more recent, way less and are not seen as trouble makers (they don't have the image of people that take illegally public lands for built shanty towns - in fact, it's very difficult to see black immigrants living in slums like can be seen a lot of amerindian immigrants -, that arrive for living on welfare or that are involved into c®1me and d®ugs).
It's true that the population in Argentina is mostly white (descendants not only of Europeans but also of Middle Easterners - yes, natives of Middle East belong to the same r4c14l group than natives from Europe, beyond being more tanned -), but is not so much like you can read in some places, that's a myth. There is like a 60% that is clearly white, and another 18/20% that is predominantly white but very admixtured (usually having a visible amount of amerindian ancestry, therefore they look mixed and in United States they will be considered as average Latin Americans - maybe slightly lighter in some cases -).
Having clear hair and eyes is more frequent for Argentines than other South Americans (except Uruguayans, that are more white on average), but people with dark hair and eyes is much more frequent, even among whites.
Amerindians are like 18/20% of the population, but more than half of them are very admixtured (usually having a visible amount of white ancestry). They are more as more to the north you go, and even in 2/3 northwestern provinces, they are majority. Also, as you go below on the social classes, amerindians become more. But usually there is no much conscience about their ethnic origins (even they usually don't know that their ancestors are local indigenous). Our educational system and media since 20th century didn't talk about ancestries that were not European, and from there comes the idea that almost everybody is only descendant of Europeans, when is not like that. Also from there comes those myths that says that almost all non-whites d1ed in the past because of w4rs and d1se4ses, and that those who are not white are tiny minorities that usually are not Argentines. This views are more strong in the center-east, that is the most populated region by far (cities like Buenos Aires and Rosario are located there) and also the most white on average (today and especially since late 19th century to mid-20th century, when was built much of the Argentine idiosyncrasy, that usually was based in the society of this region).
Apart from r4c1sm and xen0ph0b1a, or mixed with both, Argentines have the image of being arrogant and snobby, thinking that are smarter than the rest of Latin Americans and better in several things (sometimes in some sports, sometimes thinking that we have a more refined culture, and other times showing pride for having better infraestructure and, historically, better social conditions because Argentina for many years was the most developed country of the region - maybe only behind Uruguay -). This kind of division exist also inside the country, although today much less than in the first half of 20th century.
Another thing: it's true that the words black and also "indian" (but talking about amerindians, not people from India) sometimes are used in a pejorative way, the same (but less frequent) with Bolivian, Paraguayan and Peruvian (nationalities that can be used as insults). So, a person that is poor, rude, ignorant or a delinquent sometimes is called "black" (or, more offensively, "black of sh1t/sh1tty black") or "indian" even if is white and blond, and attitudes or things associated to those negative issues can be referred as "black/indian" things or "things of blacks/indians" (for example, "that kind of music is for blacks", referring actually to ignorant or uneducated people).
This probably comes from a time where blacks were a bigger minority (they mixed so much with whites - that immigrated massively from 1860 to 1950 - and amerindians - that later also immigrated a lot - during 18th & 19th centuries, that became almost completely "absorbed" by both groups, that were bigger). Today they are only 1% and most are very admixtured (having much white or amerindian ancestry), therefore locally they are not considered black, not even by themselves (and usually people doesn't know that they are predominantly descendants of Sub Saharan Africans).
And, the last thing, that case that said that lawyer is bull$h1t, she clearly is a wh1ner progressive. Those women were arrested because are part of a quasi terr0r1st group (R.A.M.) that is active in Chile and Argentina.

It took me over a year and a half to be accepted by a Japanese Hawaiian. I just rolled with the punches, let the prejudice go by the way side and continued to do my best as a mechanic under his direction. When I left there to go to another place of employment, there were tears in his eyes which is extremely uncommon for an old Japanese Hawaiian. The greatest show that love overcomes prejudice was when he invited me to a family only feast.

@@Paintyourlifestyle Afro-Argentinains exist, but they are such tiny minority that most Argentinians can spend their whole life w/o coming across one or even knowing about them, as several have shared on this post - they are as rare as Japanese-Hawaiians (see @3DogsTite comment) Vietnamese-Texans etc (they exist, but barely register)
As ammended by the Washington Post article, the percentage of Afro-Argentinians is supposedly 0.4% - but that would include also those with mixed blood (having 3, 4, 5 or more ethnic origins is normal in Argentina - my grand-nephews have Italian, Spanish, French and Armenian ancestors) so that even in that 0.4% they often don't look black (think Johnny Depp or other Hollywood stars who have Original Peoples, Asian, etc ancestry)
The only black people prominently visible today in Argentina are Senegalese street sellers (a common sight in BA and other big cities) and yes, sadly they are treated differently from American tourists, as several have also commented here I believe - so it would be classism, rather than racism.
Racism in Argentina exists - and very strongly too - though it's not against blacks (=they don't register) but against Bolivians and members of other neighbouring countries or provinces (mostly in NW Argentina) with majority Indigenous ancestry, simply because they are non-European white (they are "brown"). Even the word "Bolivian" (or "Bolita" in slang) has pejorative connotations (like "Paki" for Pakistanis in the UK) and the common Spanish word "negro" (="black" as in the color) is applied to the above mentioned people or Argentinians with Amerindian blood (like as mentioned most Bolivians) the common expression "negros de m.." ("f... niggers") refers to them, also called "cabecitas negras" ("little black heads") a totally despective term. On the other hand, the word "negro" is paradoxically a term of endearment, and is used with friends, or affectionaly applied to some celebrities who are any shade of brown (mixed) like for example "la negra Sosa" our foremost folklore singer, a national treasure www.clarin.com/revista-enie/escenarios/voz-irrompible-negra-sosa_0_Ofo9n1S36.html

I'am argentinian and I want to clarify something. There are almost no african-argentinians. There is an historical reason for this, first because Argentina had less amount of slaves than for example Brazil. Second because argentina abolish slavery 46 years before USA. Third because argentinians back then started mixing with the slaves or slaves descendant 400 years before USA, in fact the first marriege with both races was only 55 years ago. Fourth because we recieved a large income of italians and spanish immigrants. Fifth because according to a census conducted a few years ago, only one argentinian in 250 identifies as afro descendent. People in the chat shouldn't say we are racist. Education and medical care is free in Argentina, we host thousands of our neibour countries students that come here to study, even thought is not the same in their countries when an argentinian is in need in their territory. Okay, let me get this straight. I'm mixed race, my father is the child of polish immigrants, and my mother is the daughter of a long bloodline of native aboriginal people from the north of the country. She and my grandmother are native black. And let me tell you, I asked them if the ever felt racism in their lives because of their color, and they said no. Because here there isn't systemic racism like in the US. In the past? Yeah, sure. But nowadays nobody cares about your race. The things tourists or people that don't live here might interpret as racism is actually things that might happen to everyone and doesn't have anything to do with race. For example, people with a lot of money might have superiority complex towards anyone that isn't in the "elite". And think about this, tourists mostly go to the touristy areas, which are filled with those rich entitled people. If you go to any normal area you'll see normal (or, better word, "typical") people. Society is going towards being very inclusive too. I agree with your contact that in the past, "bolivian" was used as a derogatory word. But I haven't seen that happening since I was a child. Also, we were the first country in america and 5th in the world to legalize LGBT marriage. Is racism 100% non existant here? Well, no. But it's not like what your contact say or what tourists (especially from the US) might say. If you're black and come here, you'll be 99.999% guarantee be treated equally. That is, equally good AND bad. I also hate the superiority complex some porteños have and I'm argentinian myself, but their complex is towards anyone and there's no race distinction, but it's more like socioeconomic racism.

She's talking BS in my opininion, she has had her brain washed by university classes and American theories.
Argentina has so many flaws but one of the few good things is openness to everyone. the country was built on a racial mix and no one cares about the idea of "race" as it exists in Europe of the USA.
anyone calling Argentina racist, ok, some questions:
    - how many votes do anti-immigrant parties get, compared to Europe or North America? in any election, is this even a major issue? yet millions of Bolivians, Peruvians, Paraguayans, Venezuelans, Haitians, etc., enter Argentina every year, and it's not even an issue people talk about, despite the fact the country doesn't even feed it's own people.
    - what "race" are Argentineans? does anyone consider someone else less or more Argentinean based on skin colouring or features? answer - no.
    - how many immigrants ever get attacked in Argentina? there is terrible crime and violence but almost never racially motivated.
    - is there any place in Argentina where you'd be scared to go as say a black guy, or Asian, or Jewish? answer: no. can anyone say the same with any country in Europe or USA? of course not, there are many places in any country in North America or Europe, where someone not white would be scared to go.
yes it's true Argentineans are not politically correct but they treate everyone the same. if you are dark they call you call you el negro, if you are blond el gringo or el rubio, if you are fat el gordo, if you are thin el flaco etc. etc. etc. Everyone has a nickname based on physical characteristics. she is trying to say this is racism, but actually it's the opposite - because they don't think it's a big deal, they have no problem talking about it. by difference in the US or Europe, where race is a huge deal to them, they are scared to even talk about it.

The teachers and workers love and adore my son and he loves them back. Some of the boys made not so nice comments to my son on his skin and hair color. I doubt they came up with that by themselves at 4 years old. Most of the parents are nice, for a few is quite clear they are not happy with us being there. Hi! I would like to make a contribution.
As you have probably already seen in other comments, Argentina has a large number of immigrants of various ethnic groups who mixed over time, mainly Europeans.
At first, to name the children of these immigrants, they used different terms such as "Criollos", for children of Europeans born in Argentina and other Spanish-speaking countries; "Mestizos", for children born to parents of different ethnic groups and finally "Mulatos", for children born to Europeans and Africans, mainly black slave women. This was called "Cuadro de Castas" (caste chart) and was used by the Spanish empire during its colonization in Argentina and other surrounding countries. After the Argentine revolution and Spanish-speaking in general, these terms stopped being used, especially "Mulato" since it made reference to black women as "Mulas" (mules) and the term "Trigueño" began to be used instead.
Nowadays, many people, I would dare to say that the vast majority, in Argentina and Latin America in general, perceive themselves as "Trigueños", instead of "Blacks" when surely in countries like the United States they would be considered "Black people"
This is my contribution, I hope it helps you!
If someone thinks something is missing or there is something to correct, they are free to contribute!

Racism is not the same as classism, here nobody is going to denigrate you because of your skin color, but rather because of your social class and probably if you come from neighboring countries, Bolivia and Paraguay, which are the largest immigrants in the last few years. 30 years old, usually because they usually have a bad reputation for being part of criminal groups, but even so, it does not reach a level of discrimination, by far, like the one in the USA, and I am a witness because my family is Paraguayan and Even my accent is different despite being Argentine. Yes, classism and xenophobia towards certain immigrants is a defect, but Belen is wrong, no one is judged by whether they are black, yellow or whatever their color is. On the other hand, I am very sorry that she told you that an aboriginal leader was tried for racism and sexism, it is false, in the last year many politicians are being tried for corruption, and this aboriginal "leader" was part of this chain of corruption that plagued the north of the country, this is happening in different parts of the country, regardless of gender or skin color. Regarding the way in which we use the word "black", they already explained it very well in other comments, so I reserve it to myself.

I’m Korean and lived in Argentina for two years recently. Never experienced any racism. Got called a chino a few times (maybe 4-5 times in 2 years, so not much. In comparison, I got called chino about 60 times in 4 days in Cartagena, Colombia) but don’t think that’s racist, just ignorant, and none of the people who called me that meant any offense.
I found porteños rather cold and indifferent (like people in many other capitals in the world), but super fun when I got to know them, and found Argentinians in other regions warm and curious of my background.
I like Argentinians - a passionate, fun and warm group of people in general. Yes they do think they’re better than the rest of Latin America, but I’m not from Latin America so I don’t mind it 😂
I experienced far more racism in Europe than in Argentina tbh. If I’m being honest, South Korea is far more racist than Argentina.

I'm venezuelan, I'm not a white or a black person, I'm a mixture between whites and natives americans, like most latinos. I went to Argentina in 2007 for tourism. In my opinion, comparing to other latin american countries, I'm not saying Argentina is the most racist, but at least must be in the top 5. Comparing to Spain, the whitest spanish speaker country for obvious reasons, I think argentinians are even more racist, I live in Spain. Besides that, I think some people exaggerate racism there. In Argentina is common use the word "negro" which means "black" to refer about someone black or brown, but not necessary is an insult, some people use it as an accomplished. In Argentina there isn't racial violence like US, or there is not the discrimination that maybe someone can find in some eastern european countries. You won't find in Argentina groups like the KKK living in communities like they do in US. Argentina normally don't threat or discriminate tourist, with exceptions. When I was there seldom I felt some people looking at me a little weird. I remember that I was in a museum in Buenos Aires and a worker said to me "no toqués eso, negro", which means "don't touch that, black", but for the way he said it and the context, I think that sir was being racist, although most of people were kind with me. There are many venezuelans inmigrants in Argentina, a friend of me told me that for some jobs, some exclude dark people, but I don't know if that's true. For ending, I agree that some argentinians feels superior for their ethnicity, but is a mistake believe all are bad racist people, and I think countries like USA or Germany, have by far a more terrible history of racism, and won't surprise me that some parts of the US are more racist than many from Argentina

That about Sarmiento is not true at all, and if I remember well, he (Bad Empanada) didn't quote that but just mentioned it like one of the old and fake theories, and then mentioned what actually happened with blacks according to historians, that was the gradual mixing with whites and amerindians (both groups that were bigger) during two centuries until became almost completely absorbed through it, and that's why they became a tiny and very admixtured minority.
You can read to Erika Denise Edwards (on UA-cam also there is stuff from her about this topic), a black American woman historian that study the history of black people in Argentina since 2002 and even wrote a book about it, that she also mention that the main reason for the decline of the black population in Argentina was the mixing with whites and amerindians.

eradicate sounds a lot to like mass killing to me... that's a weird choice of words. That didn't happen. All he did was to write a book about why they should promote European immigration (and he did exactly that during his presidence); sure, he did it because he thought they were "superior" to natives. But he didn't eradicate the presence of black argentines. In fact, if you read his book he almost doesn't even talk about black people. His main "preocupation" were the mapuche tribes that had recently migrated from Chile to Argentina and had been capturing sex slaves, stealing livestock, burning towns etc. If I remember correctly (I read it like 15 years ago so I might be wrong), he talks about black people only once in the entire book when he says african countries were barbarians or something like that.

@@dsa513 If you look at him with 21 centuries eyes, sure, he was a racist. If you look at him in context, and you realize he was literally trying to create a country from nothing, you'll understand bit more... He knew he needed to bring a massive amount of people to populate the confederation (by the time, the population of Argentina, which is the 8th biggest country in the world was less than 1 million people, desertic). He wanted to create an agricultural and industrialized country and he knew he needed educated workers and business men to do that. He wrote a book called "civilization or barbarism", contrasting what he wanted to what he didn't want for a country. It happened that by the time, European literacy rate was the highest in the world... around 90% already, followed by the US, whilst African literacy rate was virtually zero... so, obviously, people like Africans, illiterate natives, etc. were in the "barbarism" side of his social spectrum and northern european society with 90% literacy rates were in the "civilization" side.
Anyway, his plan was to create schools to educate locals (Argentina was like 20% behind Europe in literacy rate) whilst encouraging European immigration. He created a lot of schools and brang teachers from the US and Europe (that's why he's known until this day as "the father of the classroom" in Argentina and thousands of schools are called "Sarmiento"). By the way, black people, natives and "gauchos/criollos" (native-european mixed) were never banned from schools and universities. His problem wasn't with race, it was with culture and education and what served him to create the country he wanted. Sure, culture and education in times of a segregated world sounds a lot like racism, but if you actually investigate, you will realize race wasn't his main concern. He never created a single racially motivated law like in the US, even though he admired the US as a project of a nation. He tried to copy every single thing about the US, even the Argentine Constitution was made taking the US constitution as a base and he was a constituent. He took almost everything in the US civic and political spectrum as an example, except for racial laws. Why?
Between education for locals and natives and a massive immigration from Europe he managed to create a country that was once the 1st and 2nd economic power in the world by 1900. So, he kinda succeded.

The problem in Argentina about the racism, is not linked to skin colour, but an economy position and lifestyle. When an Argentinian talks about "a black person" or "un negro", is not referring to an afro-descendant person or mestizo or the colour or race, it means to the lowest economy position, persons who lives in the Villas or peripheries of the city, that are generally people of the Pueblos originarios. It is a strange concept to understand because they are not classist, but it´s related to the polityc.
