I love all of your videos but this is my favorite. You have a beautiful daughter whom I see following in her daddy's footsteps. She'll be running your mill in no time.
Good to see some cutting videos again. I know you are extremely busy. Can't wait to see where you have the saw now and working with new logs at the new place.
I think it would be interesting to see a video on how you break down a slab similar to those and how you can deal with issues like rot, bark inclusions, odd shapes, etc. Your helper sure earned her tractor time with you.
I always enjoy your videos and especially the commentaries... To me its interesting how you describe the growth or the early years of a tree. It just makes the tree more appreciated for its gift to us.
Your daughter stole the show. Once she showed up, I forgot to listen to you. She did a great job pointing out all the interesting features of each slab.
Just Love that Silver Maple. Think a Mallet or a table of this. Or just something beautiful. This Maple do all by it self. Best wishes from Jan in Norway
+1 for the cutest assistant... you should put her in the thumbnail. Got to work the clickbait, Matthew! Don't know what I'd do with those boards, but they sure do look nice!
She is such a cutie. She could be a great helper like my granddaughter, is she is now 14 she can do woodworking, carpentry, plumbing, assists in electrical projects. The most wonderful part of my day when she worked with me. As I have always told her you don't have to do the work but know when someone is trying to take advantage of a dump old girl (she is not) Hope to see more of her working with you. May take a little more time but it pays off as she gets older.
Great work and nice slabs!! Those would come in handy for future builds for sure! It’s awesome with you starting the kids young. It will teach them so they don’t have to figure it out on their own and also give you a handy helper!
We had a maple collapse in our front yard a few years back, In Toronto Ontario, Canada. Believe it or not the branch itself was as big as this log! Wish I had the ability ti have chopped and saved it. It demolished the next door neighbour's car as it drop straight down the center of it. It was a black Volkswagon Passat prior to the limb coming down, after it fell, it was 4 tires attached by scrap metal!
This may sound sideways, but that bottom part with the hole, cut just above the hole, would make an awesome large, natural large parrot nest box! with plenty of room for the parrots to dig out the inside to the large parrot parents specifications, which they do themselves! I know, it's way out there. Just from a different angle. Good luck on that, and great videos!
Matt I live near Cambridge and I have been watching the Sawyer work you do for a few years now. I have managed to gather enough free white pine to build a timber frame in our land in Wisconsin. I would love to swing by and meet you and see your rig and talk. We have a premier builder who has done all the layout and joinery, now we’re just waiting for our foundation guys!
It will be interesting if you could show an end product. I can see that you can use those boards on a table top or large wardrobe, but to make it wider you have to joint pieces together and then is where the challenge begins.
Eloise, she got the Cremona look. Picturing her 30 some odd years from now with wild hair running the sawmill business with her brothers, proudly operating the mill that dad designed and built decades ago, throwing water from a bucket and drooling over crotch figure while daddy Matt chuckles from a rocking chair nearby on the old horse farm. May it come to be for you, Matt, and your delightful family.
Watching a breakdown of a log never gets old. Two questions: What do you do with all your sawdust and bits? Have you had any issues with child labor or Grandmother laws regarding Eloise helping load slabs?
Just pulled a large red maple from our woods we lost in a wind storm. Very similar to this - going to mill it up when things warm up next week. What did you build with silver maple I’d assume this red maple will have a similar look to silver -
Nice. I don't think you've shipped my order yet (?) but I'm very interested in one of these Silver Maple slabs, especially the one your daughter helped sweep towards the end. Available? She sure is a cutie, BTW!
Interested to know what the commercial application/market is for these planks? Table tops, furniture, gun stocks etc, this is quite interesting thank you
If you had a pressure washer set up to clean the surfaces after each cut it would be very efficient. I think one of those cheap electric ones would work fine.
The Elementary School in Eureka, Mt....has the 2nd largest Silver Maple in the State......prob. about 5-7 foot at ground level......I may have a chance at a limb or two....and from past experience.....they can be quite large.... I had no idea this was hiding in plain sight.Thanks.
Hello! We've just found your site, awesome! What do you do with all of the many, many slabs you have? Do they every rot before you get to them? What all do U do with them? As I've said, we just found your site, and would like o know more about it. P.S. here is one cut/slab that looked like a picture of the tree itself, with a lot of white on the sides, like background for the tree {pic}
Always curious, and I’m sure I’m not the first to ask, but what happens to all of that saw dust? Does nature just blow it away or do you dispose of it your self. I would think that it has to pile up after a while.
Matthew; Enjoy your videos. Could you give us some information about how long you keep your cut lumber and how do you sell it. Recently I bought some wood on Ebay which was a first for me. The guy selling it had an unusual variety and did not know what to charge, so he auctioned it. I am in OZ so the timber here is generally very different to what you see.
Funnily enough, that fact is apparently not well known in some places. My friend, Sherb, was stationed at Lewis-McCord in Washington state when he was in the Air Force. He tells the guys in his crew (they were aircraft maintainers) they had better get a move on, since it was going to rain soon... the leaves were turning inside out. His CO scoffed and said it's actually going to be sunny for a change, according to the forecast. 30 minutes later, standing in a downpour, the CO asks him "what the hell kind of Northeast Ohio Voodoo magic was that?"
with that part with the insect damage, would you remove that immediately, to keep it away from the rest of your lumber, just in case there were still live critters in it???
Just curious to find out if you have moved your sawmill to your new property yet or if you plan to do so. I can’t imagine that you would leave it behind. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to them.
It's sad to see urban silver maples cut and haul them off to the grinders. How much of the nice figure at ends to you expect to lose to cracking during the air drying process?
Is your hand crank to drive the sawhead basically a boat winch on a trailer? We are making our own sawmill similar to you and gonna cut 76” wide and we’re trying to figure out the easiest way to make the drive system, you made it look so easy lol
Yes, there’s also a pulley at the bottom of the upright to redirect the line. I wanted something quick and simple and still haven’t gone to anything more complex
Hi Matt, I've been watching you cut for a long time. Love it!, even though I don't work with wood. But I can't understand why you have not created some sort of water trickle system for your blade. Is There reason ?
A BIT OF AN SUGGESTION REGARDING THE DEEP ROT HOLES!! GET A SHOP VAC AND CLEAN THE DEBRIS OUT BEFORE SAWING! NO TELLING WHAT IS BURIED IN THE WAY OF METAL DEBRIS OR STONES! COULD BE A REAL BLADE SAVER!! NICE VID!!! 👍👍
Hey Matt, about finished with my big mill. Since I'll be sawing big logs all day long I've added power feed. Would you be able to estimate your feed speed for me. Feet per minute or inches per second or something of that nature. Most of my logs are 30" plus. A starting place to figure my sprockets would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much. Jeff
I wonder what the results would look like if you took a pressure washer to the rotted portion of a tree, just to clean out the right without disturbing the wood.
15:58 “What do you mean, ‘think’? Listen, you’re the one who’s obsessed with stacking slabs, I’m just helping. Let’s get this water off and stick it on the pile, so we can get out of here.”
Beautiful log. Your daughter pushing the slab was adorable 🥰

Your helper there has some mighty muscles for her pint size. LOL. That goofy silver maple made some great slabs.
Beautiful daughter. I hope you know you have it all. Love it when you cut the logs and get excited with the beauty of the wood. God bless you.
Thanks Karen!
Hey, your getting pretty good at tossing that water - and I see you now have a beautiful water wiper to help. Great stuff Matt, thanks again.
Here in Pennsylvania we have things called 'garden hoses', eliminating the need to carry water in a bucket.
That little gal had wood in her veins, like her daddy. Nice work in that child and entertaining woodcutting content. Thx man
Nice slabs, Matt. It's great to have a helper like that. Take care.
Bill
I always enjoy your videos and especially the commentaries... To me its interesting how you describe the growth or the early years of a tree. It just makes the tree more appreciated for its gift to us.
16:58 Your slab salesperson is a heartbreaker! "just look at this straight grain folks!"
Always enjoy the view into every unique tree you open up for us! Saw on, Garth!
Love watching your videos and the different kinds of beautiful woods. Made even better by the cameo appearance of your daughter!

Spectacular log. You daughter is a doll.
Matt, you have the cutest little helper in this one 😁
For some reason I just like to watch your videos!
I like the way he constantly cracks himself up

Great job Matt, your helper is doing a great job . Thanks for sharing with us, Fred 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋
Always nice to see Matt sporting a fresh late summer hair styling..Looking good big fella...
It will be interesting if you could show an end product. I can see that you can use those boards on a table top or large wardrobe, but to make it wider you have to joint pieces together and then is where the challenge begins.
Nice slabs. And you have a great helper too!
Your daughter is very cute and looks like a big help, I really like Silver Maple nice log.
👍👌👏 I'm so glad that you had this cute, strong little helper! ;-)
Eloise, she got the Cremona look. Somehow I don't think Matt will be ready for a rocking chair in 30 years.
Watching a breakdown of a log never gets old. Two questions: What do you do with all your sawdust and bits? Have you had any issues with child labor or Grandmother laws regarding Eloise helping load slabs?
I wish I could get some of those slabs. That one and the honey locust were really nice
Eloise sure is a cute little future woodworker!!
Daughter doing just what she needs to do. She looks like a sweet Sweetie with a fine little face and fine little arms. Just right.
Daddy's little helper showing everyone how to properly use that broom on a slab...adorable.
cool stuff, you should make a youtube channel out of this.
😂😂😂😂😂
Matt you are an expert, doing a great job, take care.
16:10 brushing off that slab like a BOSS! :-) Adorable!
I love that your daughter was in the video
couple of questions, 1. where in Minnesota are you located? 2. Do you do custom cutting?
Great looking maple. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.
I'm llearning a lot about unfamiliar woods from you, Matt.
Just pulled a large red maple from our woods we lost in a wind storm. Very similar to this - going to mill it up when things warm up next week. What did you build with silver maple I’d assume this red maple will have a similar look to silver -

Nice silver maple, but Eloise stole the show 100% on this one 😂😂
Nice to have kids around the workplace, makes me a much better worker 😂😂
The lifting power on that Vermeer is impressive

There's some interesting faces in the wood. Great tree.

Daddy's little helper in action :-)
Your daughter is adorable!
Nice video! You've got the cutest supervisor ever.
Another great video Matt! I can watch you slab wood all day.. lol
Marathon viewing 😅
@@mcremona I've done that before...
wow, so satisfying to watch how to cut the tree.
Matthew; Enjoy your videos. Could you give us some information about how long you keep your cut lumber and how do you sell it. Recently I bought some wood on Ebay which was a first for me. What’s with the two big bits of tree on the pallet?? 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Silver maple leaves flip over when it rains. It makes the whole tree change color.
Funnily enough, that fact is apparently not well known in some places. My friend, Sherb, was stationed at Lewis-McCord in Washington state when he was in the Air Force. That's funny. I'm down in Arkansas. The only reason I know it's because I had one in my front yard. Beautiful tree.
Sweet log and a sweet apprentice.
What a great helper! Awesome!
When should we expect to see a pole barn to protect the mill on the new property?
2022 at the earliest
with that part with the insect damage, would you remove that immediately, to keep it away from the rest of your lumber, just in case there were still live critters in it???
Great work Matt, I enjoy your videos, thank you.
Cutest helper ever!
What do you do to prevent from bugs, or get rid of the ones already there?
Once the camera is shut off does Matt continue to make little jokes and chuckle away by himself? I believe so.
Matt, what is the liquid you spray on the blade?
Just curious to find out if you have moved your sawmill to your new property yet or if you plan to do so. I can’t imagine that you would leave it behind. I really enjoy your videos and look forward to them.
Yes, I moved it in March. Video of that will be released soon
It's sad to see urban silver maples cut and haul them off to the grinders. How much of the nice figure at ends to you expect to lose to cracking during the air drying process?
Hey Matt, love your channel.
What are you squirting on the blade as you are cutting a slab?
Thanks in advance!
diesel. thanks!
Nice September day? Matt... have you been holding onto this gem? Love the blocking tip.
Matt what you do with all that wood?
Great to have the extra help just watch those little fingers 😉
Is your hand crank to drive the sawhead basically a boat winch on a trailer? We are making our own sawmill similar to you and gonna cut 76” wide and we’re trying to figure out the easiest way to make the drive system, you made it look so easy lol

@@mcremona okay cool I may have to try that kind of design then. Thanks so much man, love your content keep it up!😁
In a log like this, do you address the existing rot while it's drying?
i thought i read silver maples were boring. this looks really nice
I’m doing what I can to shift that narrative
Future sawyer
Hi Matt, I've been watching you cut for a long time. Love it!, even though I don't work with wood. But I can't understand why you have not created some sort of water trickle system for your blade. Is There reason ?
no real reason. At this point I haven't because it annoys people
Wonder why no flexible water hose or water jet used?
I've been out of touch of late with your vids. Thought you were moving your operation to a farm?
He said in the beginning that the sawing was in september at the previous place. The end of the video with all slab stacks is at the new property.
NICE VID!!!
👍👍

The cut at 8:30 is 80 sec. log is 10' long. 7.7ft/min
I just passed the part where you stuck your finger in ....there. That was so funny. (5/9/21)
I would like to see Matt convert slabs of lumber he cut into finished furniture :)
He has done that multiple times just watch some of his older videos
@18:30 - Whenever your adorable daughter is onscreen, we’re not really listening to anything you say.
working as expected
What was the thickest log ever to mill ?
I wonder what the results would look like if you took a pressure washer to the rotted portion of a tree, just to clean out the right without disturbing the wood.
15:58 “What do you mean, ‘think’? Listen, you’re the one who’s obsessed with stacking slabs, I’m just helping. Let’s get this water off and stick it on the pile, so we can get out of here.”
Matthew? I thought silver maple was trash wood. I know in my neighborhood they are the first tree that gets blown down.
I was wrong!😜
What do you do with them?
A few months ago i got a spalted maple guitar !
Green grass and trees in December?
Aarhus Matt, do you sell your slabs?
Lots of logs there?
Thanks Matt
Beautiful wood, beautiful daughter, and a great Dad!
