Obi-Wan has always been represented as the quintessential Jedi. He is capable of devastating combat, but that is not the way of a Jedi, only a detour when necessary to protect life (“You grow too aggressive, Anakin. be mindful.”) As per his devotion to the Jedi Code, he is not assertive but passive, not combative but peaceful, not histrionic but thoughtful. It is all too easy, and inaccurate, to interpret this as relative weakness. In his cataclysmic fight with Vader, he knows better than anyone else who he is up against and the depth of his former padawan’s power, now enhanced by the Dark Side. That, coupled with the fact that I believe in that duel Vader believed he could humiliate and defeat Obi-Wan fighting on O-W’s own terms, i.e. like a Jedi. Rather than just Force-choke Obi-Wan and be done with it, I believe he wanted to prove that even fighting traditionally as a lightsaber-wielding Jedi he could defeat Obi-Wan. Only when it was clear Obi-Wan was holding his own and noting his “strength has returned” did Vader get frustrated and just buried him alive. What happened next was truly extraordinary, as there came a moment when Obi-Wan realized the Jedi way that defined him in the past no longer existed, and if he did not find another “way,” all would be lost, himself, the Skywalker children, and hope itself. So he let loose and tapped into his anger, his grief, and his passion, and after escaping from the pit literally came at Vader like a tiger. In that part of the battle you can see the fire and passion in Obi-Wan’s eyes. Gone is the cool, composed Jedi fighting discipline. In other words, the “weakness” that”still remains” as Vader taunted, was discarded. And Vader was utterly and completely unprepared for it.
Don't think anger had anyone to do with it. More like determination. Pretty sure Obi knew Vader would be able to know he was being attacked from behind too. Also notice how Obi makes it a point to only damage the mask. If Obi wasn't holding back he could have hit harder or done a follow up attack. He knew he had to finally "face" anakin. Then... he wuses out and walks off on him again. Come on dude, that's why Vader is angry. Give up on others like that and it teaches people to give up on themselves. Trust me on that this one. I get cowards to be brave by always facing them. So Obi walking off like that on Anakin AND Vader is showing "giving up". If that's the lesson that is taught it is the lesson that Vader learns. Until Luke comes along and never gives up on him.
OR..when the rebels escaped with the plans and with Princess Leia on board on a ship on Star Wars Rogue one at the end..it would've been important for Vader to do that.
Well aside from the fact that that was just the second movie and the years of mythology didn't exist yet, he doesn't need too. Just let them go and track them again later. He's impatient here so he holds down the ship and makes it his personal mission. Original trilogy Vader is much more patient and uses other resources.
@@jolly7041 This was just a small transport, not even as large as the Falcon, and Vader wasn’t able to pull it down without some real effort. Do you honestly believe he could’ve done the same to a ship the size of the Tantive IV?

Alternative interpretation to Vader's "cooldown": When he entered the room, his anger was focussed. When he had pulled down the first ship, his mind had already wandered to its insides. Just as if you came into a store screaming at the employee that you think sold you the wrong item - and then finding out it was their twin brother. You'd need time to build up that rage again. I do not think it was just a Vader "force stamina bar" that ran out. I think it was more he did not expect another ship beside it and by the time he saw it, it was too late to react to it as it took off and was too far away to pull down.
Excellent analysis, agree 100% man
💯 true , this version of Obi-Wan would’ve been a handful for Mustafar anakin to handle
the JEDI way is FUBAR
The best explanation of Star Wars I have ever seen or " I will do what I must ."
"Why didn't you pull the second ship?"
"Sorry bro, i was on cooldown"
This was a massive "oh FUCK" moment.
Now Im surprised he didn't do that In episode 5 while Han and the gang were escaping from Hoth in the Millennium Falcon
OR..when the rebels escaped with the plans and with Princess Leia on board on a ship on Star Wars Rogue one at the end..it would've been important for Vader to do that.
A way to explain it is that he was not as in tune with his anger as he was here.
Well aside from the fact that that was just the second movie and the years of mythology didn't exist yet, he doesn't need too. Just let them go and track them again later. He's impatient here so he holds down the ship and makes it his personal mission. Original trilogy Vader is much more patient and uses other resources.
@@jolly7041 he let them go on purpose
@@jolly7041 This was just a small transport, not even as large as the Falcon, and Vader wasn’t able to pull it down without some real effort. Do you honestly believe he could’ve done the same to a ship the size of the Tantive IV?
Grandmaster Jedi Yoda can barely lift a giant pillar. But Vader can rip a transport ship out of the sky that is going full throttle with its thrusters, slam it into the ground, and then rip apart the sides of the ship with telekinesis. Something doesn't add up.
Well he is known to be one of the strongest force users in the world. I think yoda's age also played a slight role in his capabilities and the fact that he's not a sith and therefore lacks the complete chaotic power of the force that is fueled by their rage

People tend to forget that his heavy breathing is machine assisted. And not an indication of struggling. Listen at how it still pumps even while he speaks.
This reminds me I gotta go buy some eggs tomorrow
Am I the only one who finds it impressive, that he did that only with one hand? Other force users need two hands to lift something heavy up.
Just imagine what Vader would have done to that ship, if he would have used two hands.
Technically he did it with no hands lol
This comment is wild out of context
@@saberfightguys damn…
I mean... using your hands is probably just a way to focus your will and concentration on something. It would not make much sense that the physical movement of your hand would have an impact on your ability to use the Force. That's why Anakin and later Vader would also be able to use the Force with robot arms.
BEHOLD THE POWER OF *2* HANDS! ua-cam.com/video/vmuAwxiSRgA/v-deo.html
So if he's capable of a psychokinetic force of millions of lbs then why bother with all the lightsaber fights.
Episode 2 yoda vs dooku, Basically force vs force just kind of cancels them out unless the other one is significantly stronger,
Sigma Darth Vader.
That would come in very handy when a TAXI ignores your call.
Technically ... someone gifted with the force could just control the thrusters and turn engine off...
At less than half of his original potential and with 1 hand 👏
Very powerful scene. I always wonder, why pull the whole ship while he can destroy the engines with 1/1000000 of effort...
Because show needs to happen :) Suspension of belief
Because then it might explode… if they just wanted everyone inside insta-dead they’d just nuke the whole place.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation...
Somewhere.
At this point with what Disneys done to Star Wars, the only thing that might be able to save the franchise is a Vader mini series with Hayden Christensen who’s been an absolute light in these let downs of shows. But they’d still probably find a way to screw it up

He was on cooldown for the second one.
You should expect to see lots of total exaggaerations of Force powers in future Disney Star Wars shows and movies . Maybe there will be walking, talking Midichlorian sidekicks in Star Wars musical movies
I feel like Kenobi anticipated this.
Well he did train Anakin, so he knows what to expect mentally.
Then we have Galen Marek pulling down a whole Star Destroyer with the force.
that second ship wasn't there when he walked in
Modern Star Wars is embarrassing. A never ending string of: "And then he uses his magic to do something even BIGGER!!!" . Bravo.
Can totally relate to this.... I once held back a friend of mine, trying to drive off on his moped
I once stopped a bike from grabbing the back tire
He is powerful here, but peak Vader as told in trilogy decimating hidden Jedi probably sometime between this story arc and New Hope. Obiwan bested him here, but in New Hope both Yoda and Ben describe him as much more powerful and formidable in their memories.
I mean it's basically the same as a mana/ cooldown explanation, but a bit more psychological. Not to say the dark side made any sense...
The power of Vader even tho he’s nurfed is still terrifying 😅
Why didn’t Vader do that in empire? Twice the falcon got away from him that movie. Why didn’t he do that to the stolen shuttle in jedi?
He seems upset
Aint no way he got trolled like that
Did Vader just get trolled LOOOOOL. Hahahahaha funnniiiii.
I do not think it was just a Vader "force stamina bar" that ran out. I think it was more he did not expect another ship beside it and by the time he saw it, it was too late to react to it as it took off and was too far away to pull down. That and it was not easy for him to bring it down in the first place, so he did need time to recover his strength.
"Recover his strength"... So you're saying his stamina bar ran out?
@@norsendeI think he did not expect the ship to come out of the other ship and yes, it, took a lot for him to bring down the ship. I think it was more the ship coming out of the other ship he did not expect, so he failed to react quick enough.
