OMG. David, you have rocked my art world. I’ve been waiting for you for years. Your expectations and comparisons have explained so much. You’ve moved me forward. Please continue on. Looking forward to seeing more of you.
Living in France now inspires me to want to paint again after 30 years. Your small explanations really make a lot of sense but no other art teacher ever explained this. So bravo for learning from masters and sharing with us.
David Dunlop is phenomenal. I love listening to him as well as watching him paint. He shares a wealth of information and instruction. Love his series on SC Create TV. Thank you….
Hi David, the two minute watercolors as well as the 10 minute oil sketch master videos have inspired me to my most productive and creative year of painting, and I've been wrestling with painting on and off for about 8 years. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep up the great work.
The Universe is definitely balanced David! In basically 11 minutes you have captured what I still haven't been able to coax onto my canvas. But, I will keep trying and I will keep watching you until I can do it too. Thank you David for making these videos. You are an inspiration!
What a treat and a joy that demonstration was - a brilliant painter and a funny painter makes for a wonderful combination, it was a pleasure to watch and to listen to..
I really enjoyed your quick watercolor and oil sketch films. They have encouraged me to try and just let go and paint rather than think about it too much in advance. I am also impressed with your 'easel' and would be interested if you have a simple plan on how to make one. Thank you
Hi, I am painting on L84C artfix linen, a quadruple handprimed Belgian linen ( hand primed in France) available through Jerry's Artarama . I buy it on rolls that are 85 "tall and 6 yards long. It's an extremely smooth ( the smoothest available on the planet) linen....reminds me of the polished panels of Dutch 17th Century Landscape painters. Best, David
Woah. This is proper painting. This is So refreshing! Great to listen to someone who knows that you are always just trying to steer the accidental. ( but using your knowledge of craft and art history to the limits too. ) Awesome. Wish I had known you as a tutor 40 years ago!
Thank you ...a revelation! "Painting with air, I love it A privilege to be standing behind you as you work with the light hearted, erudite banter Excellent.
Hi - We are happy that you enjoyed it! Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! It means so much to us to hear from you. All the best, Connie and David
I love this guy! This was so much fun to watch as well as to use as a reference in my own work! Thanks so much for posting! This was a lovely demo! Bye! I'm off to paint, so excited!
David - many thanks for your wonderful videos! They are so succinct and helpful in the smallest - and largest - ways imaginable. Your method of description and instruction is quite enjoyable, as is your touch of humor. I've discovered you are not far and I plan to sign up for a class.
What a marvelous lesson. And, what an effective teaching style! Sure hope to see more lessons on oils; it was so helpful to me - as a beginner, nearing retirement myself! Thank you for the excellent video. Kathy
Hi David, Great video, I love the way you teach as it makes it seem as if anyone can paint like you. Makes me want to learn how to paint with oils! Best, Ethan
love your video! and you seem to enjoy yourself so! that's what it's all about, love the way you verbally express your video also! please keep making more videos, so helpful!
Love your video David...Your teaching method is so 'down to earth' and full of fun. Wish I lived up over instead of down under to have a few lessons with you... Maureen
Complementary colors that are equal in value with soft and dissolved edges between them, equals luminosity. Thank you for that note, I think I will be remembering that one.
Rob S. Well great Roberts think alike I guess, haha. But that is a really awesome fact he pointed out. I have been making color tests on microsoft paint where I make different color combinations with exactly the same tonal values, and it creates a really interesting shimmering visual effect. I always thought high tonal contrasts were the only way to really get visual interest, so this is an awesome visual fact that all picture makers should know.
Dear realartdrum - Sorry for the long response! I hope that you have had a chance to see our more recent movies. Thank you so much and we are delighted you enjoyed it. Kind regards, David and Connie
Brilliant! I love how how every layer is slowly built up. And that u r able to have a go at this. Obviously he makes it look so easy. But lovely painting.
Jamie, oops. I hit the wrong reply box at first. now, let me thank you! and suggest my online classes at daviddunlop.com I also provide free blogposts there. David
In answer to your question about what surface; as I recall I think I was working on a varnished 140lb. Hot press watercolor paper which is exactly how I would paint on a smooth surface portrait linen.
It's such a hoot watching someone have such fun while not worrying about the outcome. I think it usually makes the resulting painting better and more enjoyable to view when it's done (well.... at least for me!). I just found you today and can't wait to binge watch your videos. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to do these. Subbed!!!
Hi David, Well done from Ireland. Just enjoyed your Painting Landscapes which I purchased in November, wish I could attend some of your live sessions. Do you have any more oil painting CDs for sale
Hi, pejoly - We are happy that you enjoyed it! We apologize for the very long delay in responding! Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! All the best, Connie and David
Hi, jimjr4432! Thank you so much for watching and writing. We are delighted you enjoyed it and you can pay whatever you like! Kind regards, David and Connie
Thanks for your comment. I try to impress on everyone that historically from Turner to Inness the instructing artist worked on their student's paintings. The work becomes collaborative, essentially. This appeared to be the most effective way of demonstrating and absorbing painting lessons. If we can knock the contemporary sense of precious ownership out of the way the path can be cleared for fast learning. I also always asked permission of the student first, which Turner and Inness did not.
Yes, I was shocked and appalled when my very first painting teacher stepped up to my easel and -- without asking me first, -- simply obliterated my very first painting of a glass bottle, JUST after I'd finally figured out how to mix and apply the right colors and values (WITHOUT her help, I might add). She absolutely RUINED what I'd spent 30 minutes slaving over and was finally happy with. She only picked up on my rage at her when I declined to take my painting with me at the end of the class. I never went back.
It was fun to paint along with this lesson. Because my acrylics where a little sticky, I had to use a little different approach. Still, it was uplifting and gave me the freedom to loosen up.
I loved this demo! But...I am left with some questions: 1. Oil tube paint and linseed oil? Then what did you did the brush into to make things "drippy," as you stated? 2. I realize this is a sketch, but to many of us it would be a finished painting. But what was it painted on? Watercolor paper, which I think would eventually succumb to the oil, or linen? I don't think you said what you're painting on. Thank you, it's a terrific video! Brian
Watching David Dunlop is like taking a master class!
Joanne, thank you so much! David

Dear Bettina - I am happy that you enjoyed painting along - thank you for watching! Kind regards, David
Please disregard my question about what you are painting on. I should have read the comments. But...what your medium is???

I just discovered your videos and they are great, but I had to write to comment on your palette at 3:20, that is hilarious/awesome!
This is very nice picture
Let me get this straight...

Your a legend David
Very interesting! Thanks.
Hi - We are happy that you enjoyed it! Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us we appreciate it! All the best, Connie and David
may I know the surface ?
Very good Thanks Master
Do you paint on water color paper? And do you gesso before using oil? When you make it very fluid only using oil, does it not take forever to dry?
Great!!! you paint quickly ,
What are you painting on? Linen? Canvas? Paper? This looks like cloth of some sort, but thinner.
Amazing🎨
Many many thanks, Carmen - thank you for watching! Kind regards,
David and Connie
