  • Imagine a huge chain of mountains, like a giant backbone, running along the west coast of Mexico. It's called the Sierra Madre Occidental, stretching over 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Arizona to Guanajuato. This place is full of extremes, with some peaks reaching 3,311 meters (10,868 feet) high and deep canyons that go down for thousands of meters. It's like the Grand Canyon, but even bigger!
The Sierra Madre Occidental is like a treasure chest full of amazing things. It's home to some of the tallest mountains in Mexico, with sharp peaks that feel like they touch the sky. Just imagine hiking up one of these giants and feeling like you're on top of the world.
And the canyons here are some of the deepest globally, even deeper than the Grand Canyon in some places. Picture looking down into one of these massive chasms and feeling like you're standing on the edge of forever.
This mountain range also has lush forests with tall trees, hidden caves sparkling with stalactites and stalagmites, and wide rivers rushing down the mountainsides. Along with all these incredible sights, the Sierra Madre Occidental is home to a variety of cool animals. You might see deer leaping through the forests, jaguars prowling the mountainsides, eagles soaring high above, and butterflies flitting from flower to flower.
If you're lucky, you might even come across the Tarahumara people, who have been living in harmony with the mountains for centuries. They're known for their amazing running skills and their deep connection to the land.
It's important to acknowledge that the Sierra Madre Occidental, despite its beauty and biodiversity, has been a center of cartel activity for decades. It’s easy to blame someone for this but just imagine yourself in these circumstances. Here are some of the most common problems:
    - Poverty and lack of opportunity: Many communities within the region struggle with poverty and limited economic prospects, making them vulnerable to recruitment by cartels who offer financial incentives. What if you have a family but no other opportunity for a job except for illegal one? What if that’s what everyone around does and that’s the norm of your environment since childhood?
    - Remote terrain: The vast and rugged mountains provide a natural hideout for illegal operations, making it difficult for law enforcement to establish and maintain a presence.
    - Corruption: Corruption within law enforcement and government institutions can sometimes create an environment where criminal activity goes unchecked.
It's important to note that not everyone living in the Sierra Madre Occidental is involved in cartel activity. Many residents are deeply opposed to the cartels and their destructive influence. There are also ongoing efforts by local communities, Indigenous groups, and civil society organizations to combat cartel activity and promote peace and development in the region.
The part of the mountain range I am riding through is famous for its Sinaloa cartel. It's no secret that the infamous Sinaloa Cartel originated and remains deeply entrenched in the region, shaping its economy, politics, and even daily life for many residents.
The cartel primarily focuses on cultivating, producing, and transporting various drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. Sinaloa serves as a major production hub for these substances. Cartel’s influence extends beyond Mexico.
Despite the cartel's negative influence, Sinaloa remains a land of immense beauty and cultural richness. Its beaches, mountains, and vibrant cities offer diverse attractions for tourists and locals alike. While the fight against cartels continues, finding solutions that address the root causes of poverty, lack of opportunity, and corruption is crucial for sustainable peace and development.
This is a complex issue with far-reaching consequences. It's crucial to stay informed about current developments and approach the situation with nuance, recognizing the struggles and resilience of the people living in Sinaloa.
Again - it’s easy to blame someone or even the whole country, but that doesn’t help anyone and that just adds up to the stereotypes. Mass media makes things worse by looking for attention-grabbing headlines.

My father was adopted long ago through the Catholic orphanage. Several years ago through DNA. We found his blood relatives in Durango Mexico. Just three months before is passing he met his half sister. He is now late to rest there in Durango, I can’t tell you, how much this means to me seeing your video. I have a new Gen3 KLR and I’m going to see my dad 😢 he wanted to be close to the sister. He never knew. It’s a long way from Chicago but I have to go.

Hello Kesennia, the region you are traveling is one of the most beautiful places in Mexico, I’m sure there are better things to talk about than the cartels, almost all countries have the same cartels problem with different names. As a traveller I focus on the cultures, food historical buildings, and geographical wanders.
The reason the locals don’t want you to travel at night is because of the livestock and wildlife roaming the roads at night , you can’t see them. Besides a good motor biker never travel at night.
The reason we follow adventures like you is because we Learn from some of you about the places you visit.
    Have safe travels.
You have a lot of potential.

Thank you for taking us along with you. I am glad there was no drama on this section of the ride. I am looking forward to seeing Durango. Stay safe Kseniia.

Beautiful cinematography Kseniia and your narrative adds so much to the video, which in itself, is quite spectacular. That is a beautiful road and you captured much of the beauty. I rode that road in the late 1950's on a family vacation. A friend on a GS had a head-on collision with a truck on that road and lived. As you know, vehicles don't always honor the centerline. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. You create very interesting presentations. Stay safe.

Your videos are getting amazingly better! Great job! Молодец!
If I may point something out regarding the bike. You should try to avoid filling the gas tank all the way to the top. These bikes have an EVAP system that catches and recycles the gas fumes from the top of the tank. Filling the tank to the top will cause the gas to pour into that system and cause problems. Keep the fuel level several inches below the top of the filler neck. It's in the manual.

A very important thing to do while in Mexico is to always agree on an exact price before buying goods or services. You can haggle with them a bit to bring the price down like the parking for $30, maybe they would have taken $20 or even $15. This was a beautiful video to watch on a lazy Sunday morning after arriving home from Mazatlan last night. Take care Kseniia and looking forward to next Sunday!

Without any doubt the two most entertaining adventure tourers on motorcycles are Kseniia and Noraly aka Itchyboots, Both have hearts of gold and each relates with beauty and dignity toward the locals and the locals toward them.
Both of you are breaking the stereotypes about many peoples across this wonderful world and showing us amazing beauty everywhere you go
The world is full of good decent people helpful and nowhere represented any better than by you two wonderful women riders unlike the MSM who have much to answer for in how they portray many of the worlds people.
I am especially impressed with your Movie effort to help those looking after and educating the poor of Mexico, That is a true showing of your charcter God speed and all the best for your endeavours in that regard and may many more discover your channel on UA-cam.
As good as many Documentaries show us the world around us few bring the in depth understanding both of you do and that is a priceless gift to all who follow your adventures
I noticed at around 29 minutes in the familiar sound of a Bell Helicpoter the sound those rotor blades make with their 18"cord width is unmistakable to me, I wonder if it was a Guardia Chopper or a Sinaloa Chopper running drugs both are possible in that area such a beautiful area Mexico is easily as diverse as the USA both in Scenery and the People at all levels.
The roads are generally very good at Main Road Level and Fuel availability much better than across much of Africa.

I, too, noticed that when traveling with others, one doesn't talk to/meet locals as much, which is a Good part of the experience; you don't get to "stop & smell the roses" (or take a shower 😂). Feeling that one is affecting others' trip by stopping when you want/need, detracts from your trip experience, as well.
Noticing that a century ago one could buy opioids at the local apothecary (what they used to call a drug store) with NO 'prescription', I concluded that the simple solution to 'the drug problem' is to simply take the money out of drugs - by making everything legal, again! When they repealed "Prohibition" in the U.S. (1933), did everyone become an alcoholic? Nope! Some did; but, that is one of the tests in life ... 'worshiping false gods' i.e. succumbing to the false promises of substance abuse (whether drugs or alcohol). "You can't legislate morality.", as they say.

I see a few people in the comments crying about the title and that she should change it. There's nothing wrong with the title. That area is cartel territory, plain and simple. It's a fact of life there. Now if she' added something like "danger", "escaped" or "in fear for my life", when she clearly wasn't, then that's a different thing. In Jalisco, they've got their own cartel. Michoacan same thing. Chihuahua, etc. She's simply stating a fact in the title. Watch the video and she goes into detail regarding the situation there.
Not everyone is fully aware of the situation in Mexico. Yeah, they may know that the cartels are a huge deal in Mexico, but may not know specific details about where to and not drive to. Last year I was on vacation in Mexico and the day after I had left there was cartel attack on members of the military along the route that I took to get to the airport. If I had a channel, would it be wrong for me to mention the ambush? No. Nothing wrong with state the obvious. Bad enough we've got a generation of soy boys in the U.S., not they got them in Mexico.

When the people like the man in a gas asking you about your next city don't tell them the routed you will take in this specific day...
Don't trust in somebody, specially in the police (municipal) sometimes they works for the local cartel's and the common people sometimes too.

well, may be at the beginning, it was about poverty, but now a days, young people see their chance to make money fast, so they get into, and sometimes, just for fun, the americans send weapons and money, this is how they pay for the drugs that they consume, so, is a big business

Please, don't post your journey in real time.
    It's for your own safety.
Post your travel and route couple of weeks later, when you are a long distance of the cities of the videos.
When the people like the man in a gas asking you about your next city don't tell them the routed you will take in this specific day...
Don't trust in somebody, specially in the police (municipal) sometimes they works for the local cartel's and the common people sometimes too.
Be careful in Michoacan and Guanajuato.
    Good roads to you...
