Most by us were at a Knights of Columbus building. I think we were louder than many rock concerts . The hooting when someone got spit out of a barrel was defining. Wow that brings back memories.
10 years old in 70 ..doing the widest hand on ground turns in Maine. WINTERS AND SUMMERS on skateboards/ surfboards ( summertime) and always all of us saying. You see my bertleman . Do a bertleman Harry. Awesome bertleman Joey. Larry bertleman was a hero to. I'm sure many more than just us kids from frozen northeastern united states ( yes SUMMER was beautiful but water still frigid) long live our king .LARRY BERTLEMAN i bet he had no idea how many he influenced and certainly was never financially compensated.
I saw Larry surf in the world contest at Oceanside Pier in about 1972 or so, I was in junior high. It was a huge south swell on a school day. My mom had my 2 friends come over early, we put our boards in the car to hit the beach after school, but on the way TO school, she drove us instead to the beach. Never forget! Maybe Larry was the father of the shortboard era? GREAT CLIP!
I surfed at Kaiser’s, the summer of 1975. Larry Burtleman, Mark Liddel, Buttons, was there at Kaisers. My cousin Ronnie P, Sau Ul, and I were with the Off the Wall Boys!!

Went to the South Shore in '78 and bought a Glen Minami Town & Country surfboard just like my Hawaiian heros. Paddled out at Kaisers only to have Dane Kealoha and Mark Liddel paddle over and tell me "killer board brah". I just sat there in amazement as they tore it apart! Named my son after Dane....
I grew up in Durban, South Africa. Bought my first board, a 5’6” single fin from Shaun Thomson way back in 1981. I watched all the greats surfing at The Gunston 500 at Durban’s Bay of Plenty.
I had the amazing experience of being on the South Shore in the summer of '79 and all the boys were out at Kaisers and I had my new Glen Minami Town & Country board. What an experience!
@@InternationalSurfProperties the 70’s and 80’s was a great time to be a surfer with all the advancements in board design and riding, international travel, the pro tour, etc.
Allthough the year is important as mozD is noticing, in the case of Larry he is so much in the future of riding.....that he even has a go pro! ' nuff said
All the earliest of skaters were surfers that just wanted too or had too get rad⚡ on days that were flat. Everyone wanted to skate the way Larry surfed that's were that sk8 trick / turn "bert" came from skaters wanting to turn on cement the way Larry turn in the water
I remember 1978 Bells Beach comp and Larry put an announcement out to the crowd,he wanted to know whether anyone had a copy of the “Saturday Night Fever” album as he wanted to surf to that music in his heat . Pretty sure that was his first year surfing a twin fin at Bells .
Bertelson, sort of the Jimi Hendrix of the North Shore...& Gerry, Rory Russell, Barry K , and that was the same season I saw the Sea Of Hands Game ( Oakland Raiders) in Honolulu between swells at Pipeline & Sunset
AWESOME I grew up surfing n skating in Dog Town V13/SxM with the Zephyr team n stuff and Larry Bertleman n Gerry Lopez was who we were copying when we skated.....Kenter Canyon...Belagio...St. Clements school.....Bay St.....Marine Hill....Karate Pool.....n then came the whole Punk Scene in Hollywood.......growing up RULED

When I was a kid, it was fun to go to surf movies in the late 70's early 80's. Kids now will never get to experience that.
Yep! The surf theater in HB in the 70s I can still smell the pot smoke.
Most by us were at a Knights of Columbus building. I think we were louder than many rock concerts . The hooting when someone got spit out of a barrel was defining.
Wow that brings back memories.
5 Summer Stories, Pacific Vibrations, life was good!!!

Loved in Australia too. He surfed like he was on a thruster, way before thrusters were a thing.
In the mid seventies at 15 I was working hard on replicating Larry’s famous cutback style. What a legend 😎👍
@saltydog5342 we all were salty...we all were. Whether it was on land with skateboard or the water surfing...or both. We all were.

Music provided by ZZ Top. Perfect for the time.
I learned to surf on a single fin in ‘74 at 12 years old. Larry Bertleman was a 70’s legend, especially during my high school years from ‘75-‘79. 🤙🏼

The energy and upcoming talent in the islands in the 70's was off the hook.
Bertelson, sort of the Jimi Hendrix of the North Shore...& Gerry, Rory Russell, Barry K , and that was the same season I saw the Sea Of Hands Game ( Oakland Raiders) in Honolulu between swells at Pipeline & Sunset
I swear I see Slater's style in his moves, especially the cut backs.
Epic
Dude invented the Go Pro
Look ma, no leash! Then bungee cord leashes came along attached to a hole in the fin, then the urethane leashes to deck plugs, and then the crowds.
STYLE IN LIFE MATTERS .. 🤙🏼🌄🙏
Mr. Wilson is from Waianae. I grew up surfing with him and Andrew Debutico at Maili point. 🫵😊
