  • It's been a long time coming... hydraulic assist (sometimes called hydro-assist) on the straight-axle Suburban! A lot of people, myself included, have wanted to do installs like this themselves but were too intimidated to tackle it at home.
Well we decided to give it a shot and it was a pretty straight forward install. It took us a few hours over the weekend to complete, with added time between coats of paint. If you're interested in adding hydraulic assist to your rig, we encourage you to go for it.
This kit was very reasonably priced at $599 from Redneck Ram. I haven't put it to the test on the trail yet, but it sure handles the curbs in the mall parking lot well!

I think what they meant was to hook up the top of the steering box connection to the right side of the ram(passenger). Like you said you can flip the ram, however not the steering box. So the top connection will still be high pressure (output) or low pressure (input) not sure. But whatever that connection pressure is they want it to go on the right (passenger) side of the ram.

Your death wobble will stop, if you adjust your toe.
Start slightly toed in, try it, and if it wobbles, adjust it towards out until it stops.
Straight axles will fight if toed in and the tires get traction.
Sometimes with bigger footprints they'll really fight if there not tracking in the same direction.
Camber and road crown affects your tracking also, an excessively crowned road will make tires want to track towards each other, witch can make it deathwobble bad if the tires are getting good traction.
Out of round or unbalanced tires can put it in a wobble especially if your tracking is off.
You can make it stop 95% of the time if you adjust your toe to track straight.

Thanks for the info dude! I went a little while without this setup when I broke my steering box, set the toe in to 1/8"ish and it was great. My steering with the new Hydro has been much better. Same company, warranty coverage. 👍🏻

Leaf sprung trucks don't get Death wobble it happens with coil springs Usually caused by the track bar Causing the whole axle to move side to side. This side to side Action can happen with Leaf Springs.

    • @bigyellowjimmy

Death wobble also happens on leaf sprung axles. There's a lot of lateral movement with leaf springs due to all the pivot points on the shackles.

Where did you source your tie rod ends? I have a one ton steering setup on my jeep with straight tie rod ends and the tie rod tube hits the diff cover at full lock. Those offset tie rod ends would give me extra clearance to get more turning radius.
I have enough trouble getting my jeep through some of these trails, I can only imagine how entertaining it is to push that thing through the trails.
As far as ease to steer, have you looked into swapping the pump out for a higher volume and/or pressure pump?

Typically it's attached to the axle. It's better to have the rod move so the hoses have the least amount of movement

Being the owner of three jeep Cherokee XJ‘s I’ve had my fair share of death wobble. Steering stabilizers only help bump steer but death wobble can be caused buy something as simple as one of your wheels not being balanced Incorrectly. The most common cause is your track bar, check your bushings & ball joints. Also your pinion angle is terrible. I’m not trolling I’m just sayin. I love to a full size out on the trail. Good luck on your hunt for the elusive cause to your DW

    • @FortuneOffRoad
      @FortuneOffRoad  4 роки тому

Those are some great tips for the non-leaf spring dudes. Thanks for sharing them. I don't have a track bar or ball joints. This axle is from the older days when Dana 60s had kingpins. Do you mean my driveshaft angle looks bad? It's a sharp angle for sure, so I had to get a DS made with 1410 ujoints! ! My pinion angle is set by leaf springs, this one is set up for this specific vehicle. I think lateral axle movement is what's causing it for me. Thanks for watching!
