They're not millionaires in the sense you're implying. They own or are paying off expensive, depreciating equipment necessary for the running of the farm. Those assets aren't liquid and they aren't bathing in champagne every morning. They're cash poor.

It is interesting to see how things are going over there but Labour need to make a few things crystal clear 1) The UK has the highest concentration of land ownership in the developed world, more land in fewer hands than any other rich country 2) Post war Labour taxed land ownership which gradually started to break up some of these vast estates, putting farm land onto the market at reasonable prices 3) Thatcher abolished that tax in 1984, the effects being to make land a tax free investment for the rich, 'land hoarding' and rising prices were the result. Labour need to do more and start to tax wealth as most other rich countries do. The UK is the only country I know of where no one pays an 'owners tax' every year on their property. We pay it here and in the 'bocage' where I live it is about €800 a year but if you are wealthy enough to own property in the 16th arrondissement of Paris then you pay at least 10 times that, and that's how it should be. No wonder wealthy foreigners buy up property in Kensington and places like that, all they pay is council tax which bears no relation to the value of the property.
They don't even pay council tax because the property will be owned through an offshore shell company, so there's no way of finding out who to send the bill to.

In France we used to have Tax d'habition (council tax) and Foncier (owners tax) but they combined them into one about 5 years ago. Collecting the bins and other services costs pretty much the same everywhere but 'Fonciers' is charged on the rental value of the property which where I live is very low...here you can rent a 4 bed house with pool for €500 a month.

I worked for the police for 6 years under the Tories. Every year was cuts after cuts after cuts. Pay frozen while MPs voted for their own pay rises. We weren't able to provide even a basic service to the public because we had no staff. I'm willing to put some trust in labour because they can't possibly do worse than the last government.
This inheritance tax will reduce the price of farming land and price for housing as well. It is a win for everyone except rich farmers and tax dodgers.

The money that Tory cronies were given for unusable PPE during the COVID crisis, the furlough money and the Track and Trace cost of £37billion (and spaffed up the wall) would have more than covered pay increases for these valuable professions.

Before 1984 farmers payed inheritance tax at a higher rate than proposed, there were a lot more family farms back then than now. Since the tax loophole was introduced land prices have skyrocketed probably a huge reason why there are less family farms now than then.

I also know those surviving on state pension are often extremely impoverished. She wasnt, but many, many are. We cant substitute in a place-holder for the owning class. Those greedily hoarding our country with unearned wealth have specific names and addresses, and we need to come knocking.

It is interesting to see how things are going over there but Labour need to make a few things crystal clear 1) The UK has the highest concentration of land ownership in the developed world, more land in fewer hands than any other rich country 2) Post war Labour taxed land ownership which gradually started to break up some of these vast estates, putting farm land onto the market at reasonable prices 3) Thatcher abolished that tax in 1984, the effects being to make land a tax free investment for the rich, 'land hoarding' and rising prices were the result. Labour need to do more and start to tax wealth as most other rich countries do. The UK is the only country I know of where no one pays an 'owners tax' every year on their property. We pay it here and in the 'bocage' where I live it is about €800 a year but if you are wealthy enough to own property in the 16th arrondissement of Paris then you pay at least 10 times that, and that's how it should be. No wonder wealthy foreigners buy up property in Kensington and places like that, all they pay is council tax which bears no relation to the value of the property.
They don't even pay council tax because the property will be owned through an offshore shell company, so there's no way of finding out who to send the bill to.

Collecting the bins and other services costs pretty much the same everywhere but 'Fonciers' is charged on the rental value of the property which where I live is very low...here you can rent a 4 bed house with pool for €500 a month.

Before 1984 farmers payed inheritance tax at a higher rate than proposed, there were a lot more family farms back then than now. Since the tax loophole was introduced land prices have skyrocketed probably a huge reason why there are less family farms now than then.

I lived 40yrs and more in farming communities. Farms of all sizes. Some family owned, some tenanted. The NFU is the rural landlord's protection society. Of course they will be against any tax on land holding. They will protest this tax, but the larger members,(hedge funds, large conglomerates with many tenant farms ) will be happy. Panic the average family farm and make them an offer. Maybe even a tenancy agreement for a term. That's how it's been done for 40yrs.

Good start from Labour but it doesn't go far enough. Farmers should be paying the same inheritance tax as everyone else and we should scrap the triple lock. Farmers and Boomers are two of the most coddled and entitled groups in the UK and if they're going to throw a tantum over paying back some of the massive handouts they receive, may as well get our money's worth and go the whole hog.
I do not understand farmers. Nigel convinced them leaving the EU would be great and now the farmers have done nothing but complain about no staff, can't sell their produce, that they lost their subsidies and they will get shafted by the OZ and NZ deal with CPTPP

We have one of the worst pensions in europe. The triple lock shouldnt be necessary, but its all thats in place at the moment preventing it depreciating even worse.
As for farmers - we need to stop conflating landlords with actual workers. Half these landowners havent seen a day of work in their lives. If our farms were owned and run cooperatively, we wouldnt have these issues.
We need to redistribute wealth and power away from the layabout owner class. Not proximities for them like pensioners - actually, concretely those who own and dictate this country.
My nan was an independent farm owning farmhand on the ilse of Wight. She passed in 2014 and had to sell the farm in 2012 because she couldnt care for the horses properly, and she lived out the remainder of her life in a cottage and while she obviously had a very nice asset in the house, she was not very liquid from there on. I also know those surviving on state pension are often extremely impoverished. She wasnt, but many, many are. We cant substitute in a place-holder for the owning class. Those greedily hoarding our country with unearned wealth have specific names and addresses, and we need to come knocking.
They can scrap the triple lock when the pension reaches minimum wage level.
