I've sang this song for my family for years. Even at several funerals when I was ask.... Even after that I can't listen to it bye myself.... Just tears me up... I can sing it but I can't listen to it.....

The oldest of 10 children and having no one close to talk to, I found a friend in her music and a comfort I can't explain. She is still with me in all the vinyl records and CD's - I have everything this woman has ever done. She is and always will be my favorite country female singer. Thank you, the First lady of Country music, Ms. Tammy Wynette.

I believe that the Italian version s suitable for many more people and equally full of feelings although it has no religious references and no sweetness (rather, a sort of poetic bitterness, balanced by the intention of not giving up, when the end of a love story urges you to take stock of your life).

this was a childhood favorite of mine would cry my eyes out everytime and still do. she was the queen of country music.
An extraordinary lady with an un match able voice . I met her when she was on tour in Australia in the early 90's . A great loss to the music industry and a greater loss to country music . She was up there with Patsy Cline as a performer and now they are singing for the Lord .

Some years ago I heard an instrumental track of this song on cd of Elvis' 'Raised on Rock' and I liked the melody so I wondered if there was somebody who sung this song and there she was Tammy and I fell into silence of her beautiful voice and lyrics it kept me in trans. Every time I hear this song I get tearful eyes of this beautiful song. God bless you Tammy.

@Clodiclo Non sono rari gli esempi, tutt'altro. Considera che negli anni '60 le canzoni straniere venivano arrangiate in Italia da gente come Morricone, Detto, Bacalov. Gli studi di registrazione della RCA avevano una qualità che le piccole compagnie indipendenti USA non avevano. E i parolieri si chiamavano Mogol, Pallavicini o, in questo caso, Calabrese. La versione della Vanoni è superiore a questa che ha l'unico merito di aver prodotto una delle migliori canzoni italiane di sempre.

@bernardino9 ..prendo atto che non sai leggere due righe in italiano. Non ho parlato né di testo, né di traduzione, ma di una versione italiana "musicalmente" più bella. Questa è una ballata noiosa, ripetitiva, quella italiana ha una esposizione in crescendo e ha pure accordi diversi. E' un'altra cosa, certo, ma dal punto di vista musicale è più varia e suggestiva....Il fatto poi che la traduzione non c'azzecchi con l'originale che vuol dire? Le cover non sono quasi mai traduzioni letterali...
Ma cosa c'entra, allora ci sono remix meglio degli originali musicalmente ... Come testo questo è di gran lunga superiore, ed è quello che conta alla fine.
